Good Luck :)FLR: You are the one of the few exceptions I know of. You have close to 2000 games but you manage to play them at a good speed. I don't know how you do it but you manage. Impressive!

heavenrose: What's the point of joining anything now? all you find is a zillion tournaments proposing "all games", none of which will have more than 4 players. And you have a 99% chance playing against the same turtles who enter all games, have 3000 games and move in none. Not fun!

Clandestine 1: creation is already limited to rooks, so apparently that's no help. I'd prefer a fixed limit (small) of open, that is not yet started tournaments.

Always, supposing that Filip is willing to take up programming again.

Fencer: instead of a "no draw" rule, which impossible to impose in chess, why not fix that in case of a draw the lower rated player stays?

Bernice, it can. have a look at the very first tournament, the "official" one that fencer started in the jurassic era. the chess is still in round 2, which started last august. even taking into account the 3 month wipeout of last year, this is impressive.

thanks for asking, Ed
I for one find myself with far too many ongoing GC games from previous tournaments to start new commitments right now.

题目: Re: proposal for a new form for games
no. if you have a 1 day game, you have an allocated 12 hours; the opponent too. if you wait until your last minute, you have one minute, the other guy 12 hours.

题目: proposal for a new form for games
I have a proposal for another form of game which could be used in friendly games as well as for tournament games: instead of fixing the timeout as a certain number of days per move, fix a total timeout per game. this copies the usual system used for real-time games in chess, but if a sufficiently large time is chosen, is as good as correspondance games.

for example, a one-day game must finish within 24 hours. the first player to overstep the limit loses on time. this is as good as a realtime game.

a 60 days game is probably more than enough for an ordinary chess game. in a lot of positions you can answer fairly quickly, in others you like to take your time. it's up to the player then to manage the allowed time. you want to take a week to think about the first move? fine, but the rest of the game still has to fit into the allowed time.

some care must be taken to allow for time zones.

I think this form is particularly well adapted for tournaments. take, for example, the coming gothic tournaments. the proposed timeout is 7 days. it is dead certain that with the number of players which are going to participate in this, there'll be the professional snails who like to take their time up to deadline-1 minute. as I remember, Ed showed us recently a game of his that lasted
80 moves; such a game would take 560 days, more than a year and a half...

...my salary, which is being taxed like hell...

mine is as well. this is one area where France is not far behind the US...

however, I have no idea how anything on the internet is taxed, and by whom.

I sympathise with your tax law, but again, what about us non-gringos? we don't have an american SS number.

... Before you win any money, you will also be required to submit your social security number for tax purposes ...

Ed, I have a serious problem with this for several reasons.

I have nothing against giving you my name and email address to check against cheating; I consider that a least precaution.

but I, for one, am an extreme paranoid in anything concerning transmitting any personal information to anyone. such as physical address, ID numbers, bank account, whatever. much more so transmitting such information to someone on the world wide sieve...

and by the way, non US citizens (there are some around, me for example) don't have a US social security number.

this is really putting the cart before the horse, since I probably stand very little chance of winning anything. but the principle bothers me.

题目: a suggestion
Fencer: to resolve the problem of unfairness due to color, why not make tournament games 2-game matches, instead of simple games? this way nothing else needs to be changed.
or maybe permit the tournament organizer to pick the game format as well as the timespan?

rabbit's blitz tournament available, with a timeout of one day.
this is well suited to people who have limited tournament participation: not to get stuck in rounds which never end
need some more signups to make it interresting.
