joshi tm修改(12. 九月 2006, 18:30:38)
grenv, tonyh: But who decides a game would be called as 'very lost'? A very lost backgammon game could be a less lost game when you manage to hop out of the opponent's home area or hop a stone out. This can save points in a Cubed match.

And alas, in real life you play never on, but it will be the loser who resigns the game and it won't be the victor who wants to claim victory.

By the way, what does it matter for you that someone wastes weeks to make their 'meaningless' moves? You have UNLIMITED games to play, enjoy a Brain Rook Membership :). Ok, a pawn will not enjoy those players, but those Gammon games will end, happily ever after.

题目: Re:
tonyh: Agreed, you never play on in real life, even though it would take only a minute. Here it can waste weeks when slow players make it even slower by continuing to roll meaningless dice.

The argument "I clicked too quickly" doesn't hold either because you can resign after rolling dice (and I often do - if I needed a double and didn't get it for instance).

题目: Re:
joshi tm: This 'friendly' atmosphere? How is this enhanced by players who play on and on (and often slowly)? As whopper writes, it never happens in real life!
And to give APs to players who just go on and on; crazy rewards!

joshi tm: My experience in playing for real is that we rarely continue to play when the outcome is decided. The few times we continue to play is usually when it's faster to just make another roll or two than to check if the outcome actually is decided.

题目: Re:
tonyh: I don't think you can claim a game. If you are playing a game of Backgammon on a real board against a real opponent, would you go away with the words: I would win? That's nonsense!

Oh, and by the way, a game of Maharadjah Chess or Horde Chess with that 'claim victory button' would be very quickly then.

But there is a difference; there are Go-players who (when the board is full and doing a move would be useless) play stones in their own areas just for the AP's. I have also a game running where my opponent would lose but he just won't give up for his AP's (I think).

Back to my opinion: Just when you would win, give a 'good game' phrase that you would win, and don't claim anything cause that would reduce the friendly 'atmosphere' here at BK.

PS: I always resign a very lost game of Gammon, Go or anything else because I hate to play further in those (already lost) games.

PS 2: I've also a Go game running where my opponent still rejects my ''dead stone offer'' cause he would lose then. But I am really right. What can I do? (Maybe this is for the Go Board instead)

How about that? Quite like doubling up at Backgammon!

题目: Re:
rod03801: Actually the discussion was about a feature request to have backgammon and other games auto-win once the game is essentially over.

How about a button that says "claim win"? This could go to the opponent to accept the defeat or not as they choose.

And about gomoku, yes thats true, this is probably reason why players play even when opponen thinks that he won.

题目: Re:
Chaosu: You are incorrect, since white can win 5-in-line if black makes an error.

However in Backgammon situations arise where no matter how the dice are played it is impossible for one player to win. This is the case when you should resign.

For instance if you have borne off one piece and your opponent has 6 pieces on point 1 then you cannot possibly win no matter what, so there is no reason whatsoever to make another move... just resign and move on to the next game or start another.

M132T003C:It depends.  Sometimes, I realize that the position is a totall loss for me, but I won't resign.  That's because I don't know whether my opponent knows he's winning or not.  But in a  gammon game, where it's obvious than one is losing, I see no point in keeping the game there, especially if the opponent is  apawn and may need the empty slot.

题目: Re: Action Points
What's the problem with not resigning? I don't expect people to resign the moment they know they've lost, nor do I resign myself should that be the case, I see no point in resigning at all. Is it that much of an inconvenience to some players? I'd say the lack of auto-pass is a much bigger inconvenience.

tonyh:  I'm actually indifferent to the system, except to the extent it causes me inconveniences such as the refusal of players to resign lost games.  However, this is not the only reason players refuse to resign I am sure.  Some make a point of stretching games out long after they are decided, presumably in the hope the opponent will eventually encounter some personal misfortune that causes them to time out.

grenv:  Well, I have to say I have seen many forms of behavior that I considered more rude than that.  No doubt it is generally rude (bad sportsmanship) to hold an opponent hostage when you have clearly lost.  However, everything changes in the light of circumstances, and since Fencer has chosen to implement this silly action point system, IMHO a player cannot be faulted for collecting them in whatever way he chooses.

Having said that, if the site can calculate such a position and end the game immediately all the better! I second (or third) the suggestion.

题目: Action Points
I am playing two games og Go, against the current Action Points leader; he is hopelessly lost in both games and I guess the only reason he continues is because he gets 2 points a move!
I would like to suggest that, instead of points per move, each winner awards points to the loser on a scale of 1 to 5. Clearly, a loser who has played quickly and maybe resigned early, will stand a chance of being awarded more points by a grateful winner. A loser who has been slow or played on unnecessarily (as in Backgammon) will get zero points.
Thus, we award points to players who directly contribute to the well-being of Brainking!!!

题目: Re:
bouncybouncy: There is an option in Settings to sort your next games by time of last move (select Ascending, but not sure)
With this setting, any games that you have just played, and then your opponent comes and plays right back will be left at the bottom of the list, allowing you to play all the other games first. So, worst case scenario, you'll play a move against all your online players before playing a move in every other game, but it will garantee that you make a move in every game before playing in the same game again.

Since the setting doesn't affect the ordering in the main page, if it doesn't seem to work try to switch from ascending to descending...

Hope it helps.

Please dont laugh at my request But any chance of having a link that allows u to go to all games where the player is off-line, that way you can play your moves straight away with the ones that are off-line enabling one to then concentrate on the games with the players that are on-line. , so you dont have to scroll down all the games that u have going trying to find the ones that are off-line

i just figured out the symbol here is a brain draped in a chess board and felt a slight twinge of disgust seeing this extracted organ (perhaps i watched too many horror movies in my day) I would suggest a cute little smiling proud yellow cartoon figure something like a cross between a smiley and an et with an oversized head suggesting brainy as a replacement. Then as you accumulate brains you could put a whole row of them on one line or even make them different colors to show different quantities. He/she can put its hands on its hips to emphasize the proud look. Perhaps a whold slew of these brainys can be created as per the smileys. I think the light deprecating humor of the chess brain idea will then be more tastefully presented and so enhance the site and lose the slightly weird current look. Just trying to be helpful and hope I don't hurt anyone's feelings.

题目: BrainKing.info
As it is now, everytime I log in to BrainKing.com and there is a new post in the blog at BrainKing.info, a box with the begining of the message appears at the top op my home page.
However, since I've subscribed the RSS feeds for that site, I will receive it all in my news client (where I find it much more ocnfortable to read, as a matter of fact).
And since I think that box at the top of the page takes much space, I simply click remove... until a new post appears.

The request - Fencer, could there be an option not to display the blog entries from the homepage? You could still leave it there as a default, for new users to become aware of it, but give others (especially those that already syndicate its content) the option to view it as they see fit.

A couple of things I was wondering about:

1. Would it be possible to have a "cancel move" button right next to the gameboard? In some games, for feeble-brained persons like myself,
it would be nice to cancel moves without all
the time having to scroll way down....

2. Sometimes there are messages on the boards I'd
like to read, but I often have to wade through
many one-sentence responses in order to find
the original post. It discourages me from
reading a whole lot of posts. Isn't it possi-
ble to thread/link these posts right at the
start? So that I can look for a subject that
interests me and go to that group directly. I
know there's a "show thread" link, but that
doesn't help.
