Usually the a:/ drive if being used to save certain docs etc will try and access each time the doc is opened or saved (even if its now being saved elsewhere) so it can in some cases bottle up cd writers (not the norm though!!)
The error on the CD writers etc certainly sounds like an issue Microsoft Had when people 'Upgraded to XP' for some reason it did not like the recording programming of ROXIO the makers of easy cd creator and others. So it sounds to me more like that issue. But that wouldnt muck up a floppy drive mate.
Aragon: I used Roxio (Easy CD Creator). then I upgraded to windows XP. I have upgraded both XP and Easy CD Creater several times. Now CD Creatore works fine. However, when it failed, I got not error message. Neither did I get errors access other drive. What happened, when I tried to use Easy Cd Creator, was the program locked up leaving the processor maxed out at 100%. No matter how long I waited, It never returned...I just had to reboot.
There were several isues with Roxio products if i recall. Personally i dont use any of them, i use XP for writing discs and find it the best, but have had several calls from people that had issues after upgrading. The more common was the error messages, the second was mising drives. I think the new update (with sp 2) has fixed it though :)
Instead of bothering to write all the tweaks with network.http.pipelining network,
http.proxy.pipelining, etc pp yourself you might wish to have a program doing
that for you ... - well here it is: FireTune ... - works reliably for me ... ~*~ .
BerniceC: It's really easy to use and has the due backup function as well.
If you aren't sure about the middle part with secure connection just leave it out
still a performance increased by 15-25% is to be expected ... good luck ... ... ~*~
danoschek: Firetune roughly doubled the speed of my browser now.
Thanks Dano.
Fastest browser in the world, coupled with broadband and firetune has given me my best browsing experience ever.
I have certainly done it for DVD's although only when putting data on them?? I have not copied a film that way, you would need a third party program for that!!
Apple has released a Security Update for Mac OS X. The update addresses nine
vulnerabilities, including one for a flaw in Safari that could be exploited by phishers.
That same flaw affects all browsers that support Internationalized Domain Names
and involves the indiscernible substitution of international characters for others ... ~*~

danoschek: I am with you on that one, and always disable any updating, error reporting when i install MS Products. Unfortunately until we are offered other software that is:
a) as good as the MS Suite of products (inc OS)
b) as widely excepted and supported as MS
c) as functional and integrated as MS
we are pretty much stuck. Yes there are lots of other software companies providing good operating systems, good office suites and good management tools (server, web and pesonal) they are not all as easy to integrate into one system.
The BoyCott MS has lost much of its vigor that it had back in '97 and until we can ensure that more people join the campaign we are stuck with gates and his 'one sided' market.
Rose:
Hi the computers you checked ,does that come with a scanner, printer and fax machine all built in one,and counting a wireless mic and top notch keyboard, not to mention the affect systems, and disk drivers, including all special effects also allowing you to set up a home network of major computers, including wireless labtops that run right from your home?
There's a new gaming system out called a G3 psp.
With a four inch screen, looks incredibly nice.
Just letting people know alot of children would love it for a gift.
As for example i had to re edit my message!
The fox is much faster but the text is smaller,i'm not quite sure what is more faster that's why,due to the fact it takes longer to read and reply.
Universal Eyes:
1. hold down control and roll your mouse roller upwards is the easiest way.
2. Ctrl ++
3. Use the menu at the top. View>Text Size>Increase
Does anyone have any hints on getting firefox history to work better?
I like the IE way where it groups same sites together but with my Firefox, it seems to list one complete list for each day making it very difficult to find specific pages you have visited.
Any hints would be most welcome, thanks
wayney: not sure but perhaps these extensions could be useful for you ...
one is called SessionSaver, the other comes as SurfBook ... happy hunting ... ~*~ .

Because since the end of 2004 I can't check virus without excluding compressed files, I lost confidence in Norton Antivirus. I have tomorrow subscribed for McAfee Security Center. I like it because it detected a trojan who escaped from Norton, Spyware Doctor and Microsoft Antivirus.
Spirou: best free removal tool is the AVERT stinger by McAfee
for some deep sheet though re-installing a new system will be necessary.
http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/ ... ~*~ good luck
danoschek: I thank you very much for your help.
AVERT Stinger didn't repair the access to "Tokyo Dojo". Is the problem coming from a changed parameter about Java Virtual Machine? In that case it is strange Brainking is working fine, because I think BrainKing use also the Java.
What is not clear for me is "re-installing a new system". Do you suggest I have to uninstall McAfee-antivirus and install another antivirus?
Cheers.
Spirou: well sounds promising thusfar and perhaps my worst fear
(that was: re-installing the whole windows system might be necessary)
will not be invoked ... and instead de/re-installing java might do. I'm not
familiar with that shogi system and can't give specific help, but their webmaster maybe ? ~*~
i have a problem with my (new) pc at work ... it has windows xp preinstalled .. i only installed xp once (after a clean format) .. and didnt use it much yet
all was working fine until i installed 'pc anywhere' .. it warned me it wouldnt work fine under xp .. but i was curious .. and it seems to work
but after installing it my display settings went to 800x600 with 16 colors with no other options
(i had it at 1024x768 with 32 bit colors)
so i reinstalled the graphics driver .. and i could chose 1024x768 with 32 bits colors once again
after a reboot though i was even set back to 640x480 with 16 colors .. with no other options
i had to remove the graphics/display driver, reboot, reinstall the drivers .. and all is working fine again
now each time i reboot i am set back to 800x600 with 16 colors .. i then remove the drivers, reboot, reinstall the drivers and it works fine until the next reboot
i am logged in as admin .. can install and change anything i want ... which is also saved ..
only my display settings/driver isnt saved :(
(another program is running 'pc angel' .. i dont know it .. its for recovery purposes .. i cant find where to stop it from starting up .. its not in the normal list in 'msconfig' .. maybe thats the cause of my problems ?)
does anyone have any clue what is going on ? (and how to fix it ;))
chessmec: *nod* did all updates .. and even checked for updates after i did the updates .. and installed the updates for the updates .. etc. until nothing was found missing :)
this morning i started my pc at work .. it was back at 800x600 (as expected) .. i did nothing but uninstall 'pc anywhere' directly ... rebooted .. and my graphics settings were perfect again :)
i didnt even have to change them manually for the last time
now i just have convince my boss to buy the new version .. or vnc .. can vnc also connect to a computer which has 'pc anywhere' running to accept remote sessions ?
(the host computer is still on windows 98)
thanks for the help! you pushed me into the right direction .. i would have been stubborn enough to keep trying to make the system work with the old version still installed :)
