题目: Images
Starting Monday, I have had a problem with Brainking (other sites are fine). Most of the images don't show up when I first log into brainking. This inclueds the Membership icon (Rook, Knight, Pawn), member's pictures, and game boards. Eventually, it works and continues to work as long as I don't close the browser (IE).

Everything else comes up almost instantly (Gotta love T1's). Instead of the image, I get the place holder with an x in it, that you ge if the image doesn't exist. Any suggestions?

题目: Re: virus
(oops the back button didnt keep my message .... :))

hmm what did i say ....

if it doesnt happen now and nothing weird happens .. just wait until it shows itself again (if ever) .. if it does ... write down the info the antivirus program gives you)

you can then have a look at :
or>http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/search.html

or
at :
have>http://vil.nai.com/vil/default.asp?wt.mc_n=nl_entqlsearchvil&wt.mc_t=ext_li_con&cid=10880

have
a look at the 'downloaded program files'
check if there is anything you dont need in there (in case you remove something you do need, it will install itself again after asking you when you need it)

on windows 98 you can find it at C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files
and probably something similar on windows xp

on windows 98 you can also get there by right clicking on the icon of internet explorer on your desktop, then go to the 'settings' of your 'temporary internet files' and then have a look at the 'objects'

Thanks vitalik for your answer but what i'm looking for its to try to see what is the difference between the 2 USB versions...
I got Windows 98, and in similar place that you said for NT and XP I got:
- Universal PCI for USB Intel 82371AB/EB
- Hub USB
I check the properties but nothing I can really see if it is 2.0 or 1.1

I use AVG. I can't understand it to be honest, yesterday it was telling me I have a virus but it can't be removed. Today its telling me I don't have one at all! I haven't 'done' anything to remove it. So is it still there? Or was it removed somehow without me realising?

Harley, sometimes viruses are hidden and sometimes your virus scan doesn't detect them and then they say 0.. I had that a number of times.. what virus scan do you use?

We eventually ended up cleaning the entire harddrive.. re - installing everything... Or may defragmentation also works?

But i am not an expert on this.. hope someone else may give you the golden solution :-) Goodluck!

Thanks, hrqls but I think it might be sorted. I did another scan and it said no viruses detected... but I didn't do anything!

harley, which trojan do you have ?

if its write protected its probably in use .. close all programs you dont need (press ctrl alt delete and have a look at the processes running) .. you can also try to start windows in 'safe' mode (although i am not sure if thats still possible in xp) .. or when nothing else helps try to delete the file from the msdos prompt (which will always leave some traces .. but no dangerous ones i think)

Internet will crash in 2006 -Finnish professor to STT

18.10.2004 at 10:36

The internet will crash in 2006, goes the bleak forecast by Professor Hannu H. Kari of the Helsinki University of Technology.

He added in an interview to the Finnish News Agency (STT) that the demise of the internet is very likely when current indicators are considered.

Prof Kari said his vision is not even the worst case scenario, which says the internet will likely crash significantly earlier.

The explosive growth of computer viruses and unsolicited email has contributed to the coming crash. The next phases are the deterioration of computer grid reliability and an increase in the manipulation of internet content, the professor spells.

Finally, the entire system will crumble to bits as the sheer bulk of rubbish circling around in the net exceeds the public pain threshold, confidence in information retrieved online plummets and attacks do away with reliability, Prof Kari, known for his pessimistic internet forecasts, said.

Further, when the internet is no longer operational for business purposes, one has to time warp back 10 to 20 years and make do without information networks, he continues.

"The problem is that we have so many ill-meaning people who intentionally seek to do harm. Earlier, the internet has coped with the excess baggage and the additional needs because everyone wanted the same things and behaved well," Kari recalls.

Preparedness is the best weapon to guarantee future security on the internet, Kari urges.

"We cannot stick our heads in the bush and tell ourselves that everything is OK. We simply have to start from the premise that we have to undertake pre-emptive decisions."

Well, XP is stable enough for a development, I never had any problems with it (and I never get used to Linux on a client side). But I would never use XP on a server side for a production release.

512MB should be fine. 350MHz is slow relative to current processors, but the processor speed is not the overwhelming importance it once had. the important factors are:

processor speed - but the gain diminishes as the speed rises. going from 1GHz to 2GHz will not double the overall performance.

memory - same story. if you go from 510Mb to 1024Mb, for example, you won't gain if what you do doesn't touch the extra memory. on the other hand, too few memory is crippling. and the applications become more memory consuming each year.

disk speed - this is one thing in a computer that tends to wear out faster than the other components. you can regain a bit with regular maintenance (defrag, remove unneeded stuff), but not much.

a graphics board will go a long way to reduce load from the processor and memory.

题目: Re: xp on older systems
"Does that mean that its memory is full quickly?"
exactly. set up an xp computer with a minimum necessary for autodefense (a firewall and a resident antivirus). boot and have a look at the task manager - 130megs of memory already taken.

when you play games here, you use a browser; how much memory that takes depends on what browser you use, and how many sites you visit. if you go and visit sites that use java, or flash, or pdf pages or... your browser will load each one in turn. and even if you unload the pages, some of the allocated memory remains resident. xp is better in this respect than some of the older microsoft marvels - once you unload the browser, you recover most of the memory that has been allocated.

still, don't bother with xp unless you have 256 megs. and even so you'd wish for more.

题目: Re: xp on older systems
don't even think of it. XP is very memory hungry. with no application running I have close to 128M occupied after boot. anything less than 256M, you'll find yourself swapping all the time as soon as you try to execute anything.

the only "remedy" is to pass your time with a regcleaner or some such, hunting for those dll's and other junk cluttering your system at startup.

serves you right for chosing bill's software!

I don't know if this was addressed already... but you don't want to try XP unless you have at least 64 MB of RAM. Even then, it is very slow - also MS recommends 300MHz processor or better. W2K might be a better option for older systems.

it's possible ... a bit twisted since 98 does not understand the bootloader of xp ...
easiest way is having two partitions on your harddisk, you got to install w98 first.
2 GB for 98 plus 5 GB for xp is about lower limit ... once xp is installed you'll be
able to manage further via Computer Management from within the Adminstrative Tools
(e.g. 3rd partition FAT-32 - keep in mind that w98 cannot read NTFS partitions by default) ... ~*~

If your ME is an upgrade version from 98 then there is an uninstall in add remove programs. If it was a full installof ME then you have no other choice but to do a format, then install 98.

No there isn't, Andersp. My old PC had win98, and my new one has ME. I wanted to go back to 98 and got advice from a lot of people, who all said you have to completely remove ME to install an older version of windows. I've since got used to ME, and don't really find it much different than 98, and the system restore has come in handy a few times!

We have Windows 98 on another (this) computer and its far better, have no problems at all to use all those devices Scarlet mentions.
Beeing old enough to having used computers before Windows i remember a dos-file "autoexec.bat" where you "told" the PC how to start (paths).
My question is: If i install Windows 98 is there a way to "tell" the computer to use Win98 instead of WinME?

题目: Re: Windows ME
Why go back to win98..?? ME supposedly implements better capabilities than Windows 95 or 98 for applications that appeal more so for home users..

These applications include:

Playing Music
Storing Family Photos
Playing Games
and Accessing the Internet..

It also makes it easier to connect to all kinds of new devices such as..

Internet Cameras
Digital Cameras
Scanners
Read/Write CD-ROM Drives
TV Converters
and Specialized Printers for Color Photo Reproduction.

If any of this may apply to you.. or affect the outcome of software and hardware you currently use.. you might wish to reconsider..

Just a suggestion really.. not meant to control what your outcome is.. :)
