Nearly 40 percent of Europeans suffer mental illness

LONDON (Reuters) - Europeans are plagued by mental and neurological illnesses, with almost 165 million people or 38 percent of the population suffering each year from a brain disorder such as depression, anxiety, insomnia or dementia, according to a large new study.

With only about a third of cases receiving the therapy or medication needed, mental illnesses cause a huge economic and social burden -- measured in the hundreds of billions of euros -- as sufferers become too unwell to work and personal relationships break down.

"Mental disorders have become Europe's largest health challenge of the 21st century," the study's authors said.

Any government big enough to give you everything you want is big enough to take away everything you have.

What's interesting is the government's explanation that by spending more money and then putting that money back into the economy, the economy is stimulated and people then spend, hire, invest, etc. When that happens, more taxes are generated and the government makes back it's initial investment and then some!

While Energy Department officials steadfastly vouched for Solyndra -- even after an earlier round of layoffs raised eyebrows -- other federal agencies and industry analysts for months questioned the viability of the company. Peter Lynch, a longtime solar industry analyst, told ABC News the company's fate should have been obvious from the start.

"Here's the bottom line," Lynch said. "It costs them $6 to make a unit. They're selling it for $3. In order to be competitive today, they have to sell it for between $1.5 and $2. That is not a viable business plan."

Other flags have been raised about how the Energy Department pushed the deal forward. The Center for Public Integrity's iWatch News and ABC disclosed that Energy Department officials announced the support for Solyndra even before final marketing and legal reviews were in. To government auditors, that move raised questions about just how fully the department vetted the deal -- and assessed its risk to taxpayers -- before signing off.

Clueless Obama Labour Secretary Buys Canadian SUV To 'Support The American Workers'

This would really be amusing if it wasn't destroying our great country (emphasis mine):

To show her support for American workers, President Obama's labor secretary, Hilda Solis, has junked the standard black limo and purchased a new Chevrolet Equinox to ride around Washington in. The problem: the crossover SUV is built and assembled in Canada from parts also made in Canada.
Solis proudly arrived at a media breakfast hosted by the Christian Science Monitor today in the shiny silver vehicle, which she has dubbed the "bullet." She was asked about why she traded the standard-issue limo for the SUV. "What better example could I set if I encouraged my staff to go and purchase and seek how we could acquire a vehicle that would for me would send a signal that we're for supporting our American workers, American-made products, fuel efficient as well," she told the Monitor's Dave Cook, who provided this video of her answer.


What better example of the Obama Administration's total incompetency?

Solis added that she was inspired to buy the Chevy because of the pride she saw in American auto workers during trips to U.S. car and truck plants. She said that she was wowed by "the pride that they take making our automobiles here in America."

Such an idiot. If you're going to "support American workers" and use the failing economy to score a political point, at least have your staff make certain it is an American-made product.

2012 can't come soon enough. Let's hope our country is still salvageable when it does.

Iamon lyme: They do a lot of drinking on the flight here. And you probably know, that once you have had one too many, and hit fresh air, you really feel the effects. Once in our atmosphere they get light headed and disoriented. That's what those crop circles are all about. Some drunk alien having a little fun. Bernice: BTW, I'm completely for private individuals/groups spearheading efforts to feed the hungry. And I also think we ALL should do something to help alleviate hunger. That said, it should NEVER be the job of the government to feed the hungry. The money will get wasted, stolen, costs will be triple what private groups would need. The government is incapable of doing an efficient job of this. That's perhaps the biggest reason to oppose government taking the lead on this problem.

The report shows that hunger is increasing at an alarming rate in the United States, and our network is expanding its reach in response:
•Feeding America is annually providing food to 37 million Americans, including 14 million children. This is an increase of 46 percent over 2006, when we were feeding 25 million Americans, including 9 million children, each year.
•That means one in eight Americans now rely on Feeding America for food and groceries.
•Feeding America's nationwide network of food banks is feeding 1 million more Americans each week than we did in 2006.
•Thirty-six percent of the households we serve have at least one person working.
•More than one-third of client households report having to choose between food and other basic necessities, such as rent, utilities and medical care.
•The number of children the Feeding America network serves has increased by 50 percent since 2006.

Bernice: I don't think it's that high but I'll see what I can find.

There are some that are truly deserving of help. Then others who need a kick start in life. And others are so self-destructive that no matter the help, they prefer the rut.

Bernice: I'm not sure what the numbers are. But it would be naive to suppose the percentage would be at zero. I suspect that there are plenty of kids going to bed hungry as well. It's not just an American problem.

If true, the first question I ask is this: What the hell are their kids doing? It's not the job of the government to pick up the slack for every social woe. Families need to take care of families.

Next, what is the church doing?

How about the community?

Finally, the State. There should be some safety nets.

That said, a guy named Johnny quits school when he's 17. He works odd jobs and never tries to finish his education. He can't get a good paying job. He gets into drugs and that sucks up all his money. By the time he's 50, he's living on the street and going to bed hungry.

Along the way, Johnny did nothing to help himself. He CHOSE his life. He CHOSE to be poor and homeless and hungry.

This is often the case.

They did a study where they gave a homeless guy 100,000 dollars to see what he'd do. He blew it all away. Gave it away or spent it foolishly. He was once again homeless and broke. Should the State now spend thousands more of taking care of this idiot?

In 2008 The LA Times withheld a video that contained footage of Barack Obama celebrating with a group of Palestinians who were openly hostile towards Israel. Barack Obama reportedly even gave a toast to a former PLO operative, Rashid Khalidi, at this celebration.

This was something the LA Times hid from the American public before the election. The media refused to release the video.

There were also reports that terrorists Bill Ayers and his wife Bernadine Dohrn were at the same Jew-bash. Khalidi was thought to be connected to the PLO.Last year the anti-Israel radical raised cash for a ship named “The Audacity of Hope” to smash through the Gaza Blockade. Well they finally raised enough cash and the American ship is ready to join this year’s Gaza-bound Freedom Flotilla 2.

Yesterday, Rashid Khalidi, Noam Chomsky, Ali Abunimah and others release a video urging the Obama Administration to free Gaza and allow bombs to be imported by the Hamas terror group.
