Subjekt: Re: S-B calculation
Thad: Well I do not think we need to calcuate how many gammon cubed tournaments there are, but since what I have seen is that gammon tournaments with a cube are less popular then lets say a gammon tournament without the cube, I would think that a majority of cubed gammon tournaments only have 1 section. (under 8 players)

Not saying that makes it any less important of an issue since even if a few tournaments are calulated wrong and someone is unable to move to the next round in a tournament is too many in my opinion.

Subjekt: Re: S-B calculation
fungame: I did not think about it as being a first round of multiply rounds, so you are correct - that would be a problem.

Subjekt: Re: S-B calculation
gringo: Well when new things are programmed (tournaments with cube), sometimes things like this happens.

Normally what Fencer does is when he does fix something like this, he will go back and "fix" all past tournaments so I'm sure that it will be fixed sooner or later - probable just not a top priority.

Subjekt: Re: S-B calculation
arpa: Yea, it was pointed out awhile back that tournaments which use the cube are not caluclated corretly - I think I posted on this board what I found out.

I'm not sure if anyone had told Fencer, or posted it in the Bug tracker yet. But I think Fencer is planning a big update to the tournament code, so he may just be waiting until that happens to fix it all at that time.

BIG BAD WOLF: Plus this looks like it is doing it to many (maybe all) the multi-point gammon tournaments.

Subjekt: Re: S-B calculation
arpa: OK, I see what it is doing now - but still believe it is wrong.

It is looking at how many games within each match which were won to calculate the S-B. So no matter if the game in the match is worth 1 point, or 5 points - that part does not effect the S-B.

So for the tournamnet you gave:

You actually won 3 games against JPS - So S-B calcualted as 3x3 (9)
You actually won 2 games against aledates - so S-B calculated as 2x2 (4)
You actually won 2 games against qusar - so S-B calculates as 2x0 (0)
You actually won 0 games against Nez - so 0x2 = 0
Total = 13

For JPS:

won 3 games against arpa = 3x3 = 9
won 4 games against aledates = 4x2 = 8
won 3 games against qusar = 3x0 = 0
won 5 games against nez. = 5x2 = 10

Total = 27

.... and so on.

Anyway, this is of course the wrong way to calculate the S-B, so you need to let Fencer know.

Subjekt: Re: S-B calculation
arpa: I would go post it in the Bug Tracker if I was you - that calculated S-B makes no sense. The person who won no games even got an S-B, which normally should be 0.

Subjekt: Re: S-B calculation
volant: S-B is an abbreviation for Sonneborn-Berger

FAQ: http://brainking.com/en/FAQ?ht=19

Basicly if there is a tie in points, an S-B is created to see if it can break the tie.

Subjekt: Re: S-B calculation
arpa: At first glance, no it is not. Looks like you should have won with a S-B of 5. (JPS only has 4)

With it being a multi-point tournament, looks like it is trying to calculate something differently.... but I can't figure out how.

    lovelysharon: nope.

For example, a two game per two playes with 8 players per section will actually start up to 14 games for a person - but the system only uses the 5 or 10 free spaces to allow users in. (So a pawn/knight could sneak in a few extra games over the limit if the want.) :-)

    Retep: Like lovelysharon said:

  • If it is a two game match = 10 game spots needed
  • If it is a one game match = 5 game spots needed

Does not matter it the sections are made to give you only 3 games, or 14 games - the system only looks for the 5 or 10 spots free, depending on the tournament type (one game per two players, or two games per two players)

Just go to the tournaments link, an in the "find tournaments" drop down box - choose Halma 10x10 and click show.

Also, as a rook - you are open to create new tournaments. There are no "site tournaments" like on other sites, all tournaments created on BrainKing are created by users. And as a rook, you can also create any new tournament you want also. So if you see something that you think people will sign up for, feel free to start your own. Since it so popular, I've created the second tournament

    http://brainking.com/en/Tournaments?trg=12092&tri=68060&trnst=0

It is a Hyper Backgammon tournament using the cube to 21 points. Since Hyper Backgammon can be a quick game, it is perfect to use the 21 point cube with it. Open to everyone. Set to start around November 20th. Good Luck!

Bry: Well I could probable field 3 teams from my fellowship! Actually I agree with you, it would be nice if for some tournaments if 2 teams could be entered. I always feel bad because some people who were one my previous teams are not in the new teams - but to be fair to all the members, I try to give everyone a chance to enter.

Thad: The reason Fencer gave before was that it would put extra strain on the servers (not to mention extra programming). Since the server would have to scan each tournament, run it's "program" on each tournament to determin if enough has been finished, and would have to do this probable at least once a day on the 1,500 - 2,000 tournaments that are still running. Maybe there could be an easier way, and if so - I would back up that suggestion also.

nobleheart: I'm not sure what you are saying.

My "dummies" tournaments are setup so that only people rated 1500 and below along with unrated players can sign up. But the problem is that people will sign up when they are below the rated level or unrated, but by the time it starts - ratings change to go above the limit so if they are way over, the tournament creators job is to remove those people.

I could set up intermediate & advance tournaments also for players rated in many different sections - many the next time I create a "dummies" tournament in a few weeks, I may create 3 tournaments for different levels or something - I will think about it.

    Subjekt: Re:
No, what is hard is when only 4 players are signed up and one of them are in lets say the 1700's.

So on one hand you want to remove the now really high rated person, but on the other hand - if you do, that tournament will not start. Now that is a hard choice.

    = = = = =

Luckly I have not encountered a situation where someone is at 1599, and another is a little higher. - so have not had to worry about that. (But if I did, and plenty of other people were in the tournament under the limit - I would probable remove both.) Again, 1600 is the number around where I conser to be "way" over 1500 - so I do have some flexability either way. But again luckly I have not had to worry about a situation like that yet.

THE HIT MAN: As I write in the tournament description, if a rating changes to be WAY over 1500 (which I normally make the cut off mark at 1600), I remove them. Since ratings do go up and down, and normally my tournaments sign up time stay open for about a month - a lot can change.

And if someone is a little over 1500 when it comes time to start, I will normally let them stay. But when it goes way over I will remove them.

I'm sorry that I do not write the fact that "way over" to me equals 1600 and over, but that is the same rule of thumb that I have used on all 11 of my "for dummies" tournaments.

THE HIT MAN: This is what is in the tournament description:

"►► Since it is possible for someones rating to raise about 1500 after signing up, if the rating is WAY over 1500 I may remove that person from the tournament - to keep it fair for everyone. (PLEASE NOTE - I will go through and remove these players about a day or so before the tournament starts... so if you see someone way over 1500, they will be removed before the tournament starts.) "

The tournament is set to start soon, so I went through and made my first cleaning. My normal "rule of thumb" is to remove anyone more then 100 over the limit - so if someone did raise their rating to 1534, they will still be able to play. Anyone over the 1600, well I remove them as per the rules of the tournament.

This is nothing against you - I do this for everyone. Heck, I also removed my sister from the Hasami Shogi tournament since her rating was now over the 1600 point, so I don't know how you can think I'm being mean. I can understand if I did not mention that this would be done ahead of time, but I did - Go read the tournament description - it is all there! It is about a day before it starts, and like the description says - I'm going through and removing the higher rated players. I'm sorry if you can not read this or did not understand this, but I'm not sure how I could make it any more clear.

    = = =

The point of the "dummies" tournament is for players with low ratings, or unrated to be able to play either a new game, or a game which they may not be too good at without having "experts" with high ratings ready to kill them in 3 moves. You, and anyone are welcome to play in any game where your rating is under 1500. But if it goes to high before the tournament starts, to be fair to everyone - I will have to remove them. (Again, as writen in the tournament description.)

Still a day left if anyone else wants to join:

THE HIT MAN: As I just replied to you in the private message you sent me, your current rating is 1635 - which is over the 1500 limit.

If you read the instructions of the tournament, I clearly state that I will remove people who are over the limit before the tournament starts - which is what I was doing.

THE HIT MAN: He just recently got a rating - and the tournament was setup to accept unrated players - he stayed unrated until his fourth game

... so he probable signed up while still unrated and sliped in that way. The only thing to do is have the tournament creator create a tournament that does not allow unrated to join, or have the tournament creator remove anyone over the limit before the tournament starts. But once it starts... it's too late.

Only about 10 days to sign up for BrainKing's 3rd Birthday Tournaments - How cool would it be if we can get at least 4 players in every game! (Which a game needs at least 4 players to start.)

ClayNashvilleTn: For team tournaments - POINTS is what decides who wins.

If 2 (or more) teams have the same amount of points, then it looks at the score (which is wins & loses) - and the team with the most wins is then the winner.

So there has been in the past a team which had the highest amount of wins & score, but was just short in points - so lost.

Pedro Martínez: Well since you are unable to read a persons profile, you would know that when asked - I will try to play games faster if needed and asked, but trying to make a point on a public board is not asking nicely now... is it? Czuch - you have to be smarted then that. It takes at least at a very minimum 15 days to finish a pond, and many more days for bigger ponds or longer day ponds - and you can very simply Look at my ratings chart and tell I started to slow down in games (Chart starts to have less "points") when my rating was in the 2300-2400 range, long from the #1 rating in the game - WHICH I'm not number 1 - PLUS I'm still playing in active games and even though I never said I was stoping - just not playing in as many which I still have active ponds I'm playing in, and will be starting more once those are complete. Even though all this I have said before, but since you are not smart enough to remember either - I will repeat it all again. When I started getting so many games, I had plenty of time to play and was able to keep up with games. With a new job and other things in my private life, my on-line game playing time has went down and have been unable to play as quickly So many games were started when I had time, and unfortunatly were not complete before my on-line time went down. It is not news that I'm now not a quick player - it is a fact that I openly admit - and is something that I openly admit in my profile. I find it very funny that in one week, I have one person telling me I'm not playing enough - then have another player - ALONG WITH THE SAME FIRST PLAYER - telling me I'm playing too much.

*EDIT: First took out the "idiots" comment since some might take it as I'm trying to call Pedro an idiot, which I did not mean it as an insult - so I removed it.

*ADDITION: For Czuch: Since you may not know how to work the charts, MY POND CHART FOR MY LAST 20 OR SO PONDS - as you can see, when I started to slow down, I was not close to the #1 position, and even diped to 2100 at one point. If you can not understand the chart, please PM me and I can try to explain them to you.... since I know they can be a little tricky.

2216 avg. BKR for our players.

(Of course Bry's Backgammon fellowship will be higher once they enter - he picks the top 8 players in his fellowship, so all those players will be over 2200, with an avg of over 2300 I would guess.)

Yup - one of the players needs to be the captain. You can either make yourself the captain, or someone else on the team.

Then, have the captain go to the team tournament

And they should be able to select the 8 players that will play and then you will be signed up.
