LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - An apparent set of conjoined twin birds — an incredibly rare find — has been discovered in Arkansas, authorities said. ADVERTISEMENT
The bodies of the barn swallows, which are attached at the hip by skin and possibly muscle tissue, are being sent to the Smithsonian Institution for examination and confirmation, Arkansas wildlife officials said Friday.
"I can't even say it's one in a million — it's probably more than that," said Karen Rowe, an ornithologist with the Arkansas Game & Fish Commission. "There's just very little to no records of such a thing."
The birds, found by a landowner in White County, fell out of a nest as a healthy sibling flew off to learn how to hunt with its parents, Rowe said. The birds first appeared to have only three legs, but further examination found a fourth leg tucked up underneath the skin connecting the pair.
Rowe said the landowner likely kept the birds for a day before calling wildlife officials. By the time officials arrived, the birds were not eating. One died early Friday and a veterinarian later euthanized the other.
Finding conjoined birds is rare because they likely die before being discovered, Rowe said.
X-rays of the pair found each bird was fully formed, Rowe said. She said the birds would have had to come from a double-yolk egg.
Barn swallows can live for several years, though the conjoined twins might not have lived that long even if they had been separated. Rowe said it would have been difficult to teach the birds to fly.

Thema: Re: Dog meat off Chinese menus during upcoming Beijing Olympics
Jim Dandy: Sooo, if the Olympics were held in India would they start eating cows? I don't think they should have to alter their culture for anyone/anything, it's their way of life (but I don't eat animals so what do I know)
Thema: When you think of dangerous dog breeds, which animal do you picture: a pit bull or a wiener dog?
I'm intimidated more by a small dog then a big one every time, I'll take a pitbull/rottie/shepherd/doberman anyday. Small dogs, in my opinion, seem to be way more snappy and/or mean to people and other dogs - but I always figured that they are trying to compensate for their small stature.

I have a dead moose free for the taking.
It died yesterday, apparently of natural causes. I called Fish & Game to come and get it. Apparently, moose are a natural resource and belong to everybody, until they die, then they belong to whoevers property they die on. So, according to Fish & Game, the moose now belongs to me. Sweet!!
So, if you want a free moose, please come and get it before the bears do.
You could use it for dog food, or stuff it and put it your front yard, bear bait, whatever. If you live in the lower 48, this might be your best opportunity to get a free Alaska moose. I dont really care, I just want it out of my yard.
Please reply via email, I dont need all the animal rights folks calling me, its dead, and according to Fish & Game, its got no more rights...

Ferocious attack kitten is available for adoption to any home willing to accept him.
This destructive kitty has been trained as a proud warrior and will fiercely defend your house, even against you. Well-trained since 10-weeks of age to attack anything in his presence, he will protect your family from evil things, including the following:
* insects
* other trained attack kittens
* babies
* toilet paper
* anything under a blanket
* unwanted house guests * paper bags
* floor rugs
* Chuck Norris
* Feet.
Great with children (assuming you don’t like the children). Probably best used for professional catfighting. He is housebroken, but only because he wants to be. This attack cat has trained himself to seek out his food anywhere you hide it and rip the bag open to feed himself, great for those who travel extensively. Also trained to drink water out of toilet bowls and dishwater from items in the sink. Knows how to open some doors. He will find you wherever you hide.
Neutered (trust me, you wont want to him to procreate). Has not been declawed, but you'll figure that out really fast.
Understands and responds to a variety of vulgar and profane verbal commands. Has a very soft and furry belly, like a teddy bear - however he will bite your face if you try to touch it.
Willing to accept trades. Potential adopters must have experience with trained attack-kittens... please be prepared to show scars.
For the love of God, someone please take this thing out of my house.

Hi, I found a cat today near the arboretum. She's black with white stripes down her back. She seems a little standoffish. Does not get along well with children.
She doesn't have a collar, but seems to be an indoor cat and went without hesitation for a can of cat food I opened for her.
I think she's been away from home a while. She's quite smelly. May need a bath.
Please e-mail me to claim. Small rehoming fee (to cover the cost of the litterbox and cat food).
This undated photo provided by the Center of Natural Sciences in Prato, Italy, Wednesday, June 11, 2008, shows a deer with a single horn in the center of its head. The one-year-old Roe Deer - nicknamed 'Unicorn'' - was born in captivity in the research center's park in the Tuscan town of Prato, near Florence, Gilberto Tozzi, director of the Center of Natural Sciences, said. He is believed to have been born with a genetic flaw; his twin has two horns.

anastasia: LOL - I think it's something that was a LONG time coming for me. I just couldn't deal with bones and such anymore (Thanksgiving Dinner - turkey, turkey, turkey - was always a rough one for me, even as a kid, I felt sad for the beautiful bird). I still eat some animal products tho, milk, eggs, butter, but hopefully nothing that any animals are actually "put-down" for (I guess). Both my sons are meat-eaters tho and that's entirely their choice ... I don't think our country makes it very easy to give up ... it's everywhere, true?

Barbaro (April 29, 2003 – January 29, 2007) was an American thoroughbred that decisively won the 2006 Kentucky Derby but shattered his leg two weeks later, in the 2006 Preakness Stakes, ending his racing career and eventually leading to his death.
On May 20, 2006, Barbaro ran in the Preakness Stakes as a heavy favorite, but, after he false-started, he fractured three bones in and around the ankle of his right hind leg. The injury ruined any chance of a Triple Crown in 2006 and ended his racing career. The next day, he underwent surgery at the New Bolton Center at the University of Pennsylvania for his injuries. In July he developed laminitis in his left rear leg. He had an additional five surgeries, and his prognosis varied as he remained for an extraordinarily long period of time in the equine Intensive Care Unit. While his right leg eventually healed, a final risky surgery on it proved futile because the colt soon developed further laminitis in both front legs. His veterinarians and owners then concluded that he could not be saved, and Barbaro was euthanized on January 29, 2007
Thema: Couldn't say it better myself ....... poor filly .......
I agree, she was too young and hadn't properly developed. She was still a baby and it wasn't fair. It's just her owners trying to get a bit more money out of her. anastasia: I've made that mistake - and learned my lesson - with baby birds that blew out of nests in thunderstorms and then the kids wound up bringing them home - not good Two questions tho - why do all groundhogs seem to be HUGE (and everywhere lately, like that arcade game where you "bop" em on the head)? And why are possums SO ugly (they really truly have a face that only their mother could love)?
Thema: Re: W ...O... W ... how incredible to see :)
Jim Dandy: That is a good question - anybody know? Even tho I live in the woods, I don't hunt (or hurt) any living things (bugs included). I'll ask at work in the morn, hunters galore there, they even close the schools for the first day of the season, somebody'll know

A rare wild jaguar seen and photographed in the United States by hunter Warner Glenn is bayed by hounds during a hunting trip at an unknown location in southwestern New Mexico, February 20, 2006. Glenn and other members of his hunting party caught the hounds and led them away after they cornered the jaguar. The male jaguar, which weighed around 200 pounds, left the site at a slow trot unharmed. Jaguars are extremely rare in the United States, and Glenn is believed to be the only person to have encountered and photographed one in the wild. Photograph taken February 20, 2006.

Thema: that's another issue I need clarified,which sex would match best with two female cats?
Jim Dandy: Wow, I'm definately out on a limb on that one While I'm thinking of it, I know someone who has a male "Pug" and cats too and they get along just peachy ( I think the cats were there first, maybe that's the trick to harmony, and the pug is a total sweetheart, I don't think he's got a mean bone in his body)
Thema: Re: Yes,smaller males sometimes seem to have a chip on their shoulders regarding size,but we compensate with big cars
Jim Dandy: You know where I live there are many, many women with BIG cars (trucks really) & they say it compensates for their aggressive nature Oh, and beagles are gorgeous, my neighbor has one, I LOVE her bark (howl), it's like she's singing She doesn't care for any other dogs tho (we've got lots living here), she's more a loner. She's not crazy about people either, but maybe it's just a trust issue (she's rescued), and she lets me pet her, she growls softly when I do (lol) but she lets me I think she just likes the attention she gets from the couple that has her the best - very sweet dog, lots of emotion in her
Thema: Re: ..as she gets older she is becoming extremely dominate..so much in fact that she is challanging D for the dom statues between the 2 of them
anastasia: That must be a fun argument to watch Are spayed females generally more dominant than males in a group canine situation? Wow does mine get snippy with certain male dogs at parks, etc. if they don't give her her "space" sometimes But she's not like that with cats and others, maybe she knows of their ability to put their claws up?
Thema: Re: I need to call on your experience and knowledge
Jim Dandy: One more thought, if I may - being that the cats were there first should help BIG time. Even my "Duck-Killer" (and everything else) dog was tolerant of a rabbit that I had at the time who was cage-free whenever I was home, they weren't best-buds by far, but I think he knew who was there first
Thema: Re: I need to call on your experience and knowledge
Jim Dandy: I SO agree with Anastasia, that's one you definately need to research My shelter-dog LOVES animals, all animals, and people, all people (but she eats bees-lol). But she's also no puppy & was truly desperate for a "home". The shelter that she was at let me take her around on a couple occasions to "meet and greet" because I had an elderly uncaged ferret at home and wanted to make sure she'd be nice to him, and she was wonderful, he died a very content old ferret. But I also had a shelter-dog for many, many years who hunted anything & everything he could. I'd stay clear of any breed of hunting/tracking/or incredibly dominant dogs. From my experience, some small dogs are nastier than the HUGE ones (makes up for their lack of size?) Also, I really hope that your cats still have their claws, yes? That is a cat's defense, especially when it comes to a dog's teeth - I think that's what makes a dog think twice & what chance does a cat have without them with an angry dog in front of them, no matter what size? Just my opinion
anastasia: Awww, poor Niki I hope she is recouping well & I do believe that everything happens for a reason - there's something very special that she's meant to do & maybe, just maybe, she needs to be young to get started on her way, so that's why now instead of later Dogs have the ability to be SO much to SO many, it would be great if "therapy" was her calling, I wish her (and Damien, of course) ALL the best that a dog's life has to offer
anastasia: Awww, glad to hear that they are both doing so well Amazing how dogs (and other pets too) are like little ones that never, ever grow up - always miss you when your not there, always happy to have you back, and always (even tho they are snoring away when you get up) taking over the spot you just left in the bed
