Thema: Re: Autopass and conditional moves.
mctrivia: The pseudo code is trivial

If (canMove(player2))
{
endMove(player1)
}
else
{
player2.pass
}

I don't think the difficulty of the code is the point, only the fact that for silly reasons it is not implemented.

The point about chatting is not even correct, since what is the difference between making one move and typing a message, and making 6 moves and typing the same message? I don't get it.

Thema: Re: Conditional moves
Verändert von grenv (24. November 2005, 03:56:54)
mctrivia: You misunderstood. There are 2 types of conditional moves:

1."If my opp plays x then I play y. This may be useful, but how often can you predict the opponents move?

2.Propose to your opponent the next few moves. If he or she agrees play continues from that point. This is very useful in many "semi-forced" continuations. Against a weak opponent you may be hoping for a silly error, but a good player is likely to see the same continuation and agree.

example.
After
1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5, black could move 3...a6 with the proposal 4.Ba4 Nf6

If white accepts he can play move 5 immediately. If not he may play an alternative to 4.Ba4.

Thema: Re: Conditional moves
mctrivia: On many chess sites it is possible to propose moves for both players. For example you may check your opponent and there's only one place to logically move.
This is very useful for some variants like anti and atomic chess. Not so useful in dark chess, lol.

alanback: The advantage of letting the opponent see, is that by them accepting you can jump ahead that many moves all at once. This wouldn't be used much early, but can be very useful later when there are forced moves for a few moves.

Thema: Re: Conditional moves in Chess
Verändert von grenv (20. November 2005, 03:06:23)
playBunny: Conditional moves are where after your move you propose what the next few moves should be. The opponent can accept or reject them. It is very useful in speeding up the game when there are a few forced or obvious moves.

An analysis board is a board where you are able to move the pieces around while analyzing the position, presumably it would start in the same state as the actual game board.

Thema: Re: Out of leftfield....
Czuch Chuckers: I think the ratings are being manipulated by players that refuse to play certain games, while others are willing to play anyone. Therefore they are being rendered meaningless.
At least if you were forced to play random people from time to time that would be somewhat addressed.

Thema: Re: Out of leftfield....
playBunny:

If the ratings work properly it shouldn't matter how lowly the opponent is rated.

If the ratings don't work properly (as may be in backgammon) then it shouldn't matter what your rating is.

Either way I think the ratings will be more accurate and therefore more meaningful if EVERY competitive game played is counted.

I'm just tired of people complaining about playing players with low ratings. I play all sorts of lower rated players without too much affect on my oh so important rating.

Thema: Re:
playBunny: Or how about the idea that the ratings actually mean something that has a material impact on your life and choose your opponents accordingly. Relax, it's just a game. Nobody cares what your stupid rating is.

Thema: Re:
Czuch Chuckers: I think that's the worst idea I ever heard. If you play a competitive game it shouhld be rated. If you play a low rated player try beating them, that won't affect your rating.

Thema: Backgammon
I think many people are missing the point. Backgammon players are asking for a fix to the game, and the addition of a crucial element (the cube). I agree we don't need any new variations of backgammon.

Thema: Re:
Fencer: It's not a question of obligation, nobody is asking for their money back.

However if you want more people to renew their membership or new people to join then you may need to provide more. For example potential members that enjoy backgammon but not chess will go elsewhere if you don't fix the bug and introduce the cube.
