coan.net: Thank you for your quick response. Some of us are really into the Team Tournaments, and we appreciate that this will be accomplished on a regular basis.
One suggestion that I have is that we include one game that has never been offered before in a Team Tournament before. This will introduce a seldom-played game to new players. I currently play many games that I had never tried before Team Tournaments introduced them to me.
emmett: The one posted earlier was just playing / testing - to make sure it did work - I guess before Fencer made this function, he was manually entering the tournaments into the database.... which was more work, and probable why he did not make that many often.
It's still 90 days before the "next" set, so I will probable wait awhile before I add more tournaments. I believe that me & Tanein will take turns - one creating a set each month. I will AT LEAST create them 30 days in advance, but probable closer to 60 days in advance - to give plenty of time to get teams together. I don't want to make them too soon - or a new game might get added to the site where I might want to create a tournament for.
(And if a time comes that we slow down on creating tournament, feel free to give me a friendly nudge to create more.)
coan.net: Your schedule sounds good and I agree that there should not be too many team tournaments. Just don't forget that all backgammon variants can be played without or with the doubling cube :-)
coan.net: I hope you keep us posted on team tournaments. There are some other things ( like interviews) that happen so rarely, with few updates, that one gives up wondering when the next one will happen. Some kind of regular feedback would be nice.
Also, you mentioned that you have to have six start each month. Why did only one get posted recently?
Eriisa: .... plus I would try to spread tournaments out - so I would probable pick 1 gammon game, probable Nack since that past tournament is already complete.
But that list is also misleading - since "short" game which do not last very long will of course have less active games - where Ludo (for example) takes awhile longer - so has a higher amount of current games.
emmett: I believe the ability to create site team tournaments were given to 2 people - myself & Tanein.
One thing I would hate to see is that the site team tournaments become so common like regular tournaments, that they lose their "special tournament" feel.
Currently, I think our plan for the site team tournaments is to have around 6 start each month. (that way hopefully enough to keep site team tournaments always going, but not enough to overload anyone).
Even though I have not set down to see which tournaments I would start next, the idea in my head is to have something like:
popular games = Current running games ( http://brainking.com/en/Statistics?p=2 ) is a good guide on how popular a game is... not a perfect indication, but again - just a good guide.
2 tournaments from the top 20 popular games
2-3 tournament from the 21-50 popular games
And at least 1, if not 2 tournament from the bottom 50 (well bottom 54) games
Again, that is just a rough outline on how I will try to spread out the games, so we can keep the popular tournaments going and include the not-as-popular games into the mix (which of course I'm happy to take suggestions.)
emmett: Logic would say Team Captains and Big Bosses should be able to as they can set Team challenges anyway and there is no real difference, but i see no option
"Snoopy": I guess he has placed those waiting games before, when he was somtehnig else than pawn ... He is now playing more than 1000 games, a bit much for a pawn ... I have added him to my blocked users so I dont see his invitations ...
tippyc: as Vikings said I'm not sure if pawns can do this but in the same place where you can un-check anti-checkers games you can also say don't show un-rated games, which will get rid of every single game robtoo has in the waiting games area.
tippyc: I'm not sure that pawns have this option, but, if you don't like anti-checkers you can go into the game filter in the setting page and un-check that game and they will disappear for you
why does robtoo need 230 invitations for unrated anti checkers?
it looks like most of the bandwidth represented by those 5000 games is currently being wasted by robtoo. i guess he, like anyone else, has a right to post invitations to games, but isnt 200 a little much?
wetware: Damn. It would be safer sending Fencer cash in a plain white envelope with block letters on the outside saying "CASH INSIDE" in both English and Czech. LOL
Pbarb2: You can also forward that kind of email to spoof@paypal.com, but do so without removing any of the message header or clicking on any links contained in the message you received.
Other financial organizations typically have a similar email box (spoof@ebay, abuse@bankofthewest.com, are some examples), where such spoofing attempts can be directed for quick investigation and disabling of the spoofing site(s).
I generally will forward such messages, even if I have no dealings whatsoever with the financial organization that the message "seems" to come from. (I figure I'm doing a good deed that way.) Remember that spoofers are usually just guessing which organizations people might have accounts with, so they'll tend to pick larger ones ( = better chances of their reaching actual customers, and perhaps getting somebody to respond and divulge personal information).
coan.net: Thanks.. I am glad you printed that out so others will know. It looked so offical to me. At least I got my credit card changed before they had a chance to do anything with it.
Pbarb2: A tip for everyone who has PayPal, Banking online, etc...
If ANY place sends you an e-mail saying they need updated information, like PayPal, etc... DO NOT - EVER - follow the link that is in the e-mail.
For example, if PayPal send you a message saying something needs updated, DO NOT click the link. - Go to your web browser and type in http://www.paypal.com - and go to the site that way and sign in.... and once you sign in there, if there is something that needs done - it will there let you know. Otherwise, it was probable a scammer where the link in the e-mail might look real - but sends you to their own page to collect information that is entered there. (Same with ebay, any bank, or really - any account you have.)
Take an extra 30 seconds and go type in the address yourself rather then follow links. And if it is your bank or something, call them on the phone. I don't know of any bank that will ask you to update information over the web - they will call you, or want you to call them.
Pbarb2: On the General settings page, in the section "other parameters" you'll see two boxes "Allow other users to send fellowship invitations" and "Allow other users to send tournament invitations" to either have ticked or unticked.
Eriisa: Yes, thats the name spoof. Another year older and another memory block. LOL I am ok..but just wanted others to know so they don't get onto the same thing. Maybe they are smarter than I was.
Pbarb2: Those are called spoof emails. People will send them out to look like PayPal or eBay or your bank.
First rule of thumb... never click any links in an email. Just to to the website on a fresh page and log in.
one hint on Paypal emails, is that it will have your full name in the Dear So&So line. Not your email address, or anything else. BUT I have been getting spoofs with my name lately. I think however, its because I'm an ebay seller and someone got my info off a sale.
Someone has on their profile not to send them fellowship invites. How does he get that off? He said, he did not put that there. He is getting fellowhip invites by some link they are sending him. I have no idea how to do that and would rather send it the regular way...but somehow there is a block there to not send invites to fellowships. Does anyone know what to do? He is also on webtv.
Purple: I have webtv and used PayPal ewver since I had to pay for game memberships. Not to long ago someone sent me a message saying that I had to update. I went in to update and first thing it said was give my credit card number. It was on the offical PayPal sheet so I did it. As I was sending it I caught the date of that page was 2005 not 2007. It was to late to get it back. I then called PayPal and they confirmed it was not anything they sent out. They suggested I get my credit card number canceled and a new one sent. They said they were going to check it out and with the law enforcement and get the people sending these out. So about 2 weeks ago I got the same thing. I sent it to the PayPal and they again said it was not anything they sent out. Someone is trying to get credit card numbers. Please beware of that. I did not try to use PayPal since this happened. So hope when it is time to renew it works. Oops forgot...this page to fill my credit card number was not in the secure part of PayPal. I wrote this so all who use PayPal beware of this happening.
rod03801: One last off-topic post. If I could (use PayPal) don't you think I would? I even went so far as to talk to them on the phone for 20 min. The end result is that everything was fine except for one thing. I needed to confirm by e-mail my password etc and they have a hyper-link I had to use which webtv doesn't recognize. The really strange part is when I renewed my GoldToken membership with my credit card THEY automatically rolled it over and it was billed through my credit card to my non-existant PayPal account. And I have not been smoking. lol
emmett: Sorry about the misunderstanding. I was addressing my comment towards Purple, as he says it can't be used with WebTV. I used WebTV for years until recently, and used PayPal all the time.
Purple: I don't understand why you say paypal can't be used. I think I will hook my webtv back up this afternoon and check it out. I'll buy some brains with it or something. (No comments!, lol)
Purple: Common Purp. Not hard at all to send cash. Isn't there a webtv-f/s? Soon enough we'll know if you can paypal with it. Letters to the Czech Rep. with money in it should be send regristred (strongly recomanded, appart the possibility that sending money by mail to the czechs isn't allowed maybe, that is why he wouldn't offer it as a payment method), otherwise noone should cry if he tells you: no, no letter arrived. They go through many hands, and a thief checking 3000 letters each day will take 30€ with pleasure. Money with its addicions brings the world to an end, as a matter of fact.
Fencer: Here is a plan. Publish the address where you recieve your mail and we can send cash. The amounts are usually too small to warrant theivery or mail theft. There is about $1.75 postage to mail overseas but that's no big deal. If American dollars are no good anymore then the world is coming to an end. :)
Fencer: I'm sorry F. I have only shopped with large "corporate" companies online so far, so my statement was too broad and ill-informed. My passionate response regarding Paypal stemmed from the very, very frustrating experience I had with them. I claimed that I would never pay for a brainking membership again after that experience. Of course, your charisma and my connection with brainking has since turned that decision around.
emmett: "Every other company does"? That's really funny. Have you ever tried to accept credit cards directly? I have been negotiating with several banks regarding this issue and their policy is very disadvantageous for me, compared to PayPal. That's why we don't support it, at least not now.
Purple: There is an option for transferring the money directly to Fencer's account. I never understood exactly why that option says Czech Republic only... International money transfers are a perfectly valid and easy form of payment and I know of many people that prefer them to the hassle of using PayPal (and sometimes it's cheapper too, especially if within the Euro zone )
"Snoopy": Yes - you will continue. As long as a person is there for the start, even if they are a pawn or even no longer with the fellowship or team - they will continue and finish what was started in the team tournament. (At least I'm pretty sure of that.)
