Embassy Chess

Embassy Chess (by Kevin Hill) is a variation of Bird's (or Capablanca's) Chess. It is played on 10x8 board and adds two new pieces:
  • Cardinal - it can move like a knight and a bishop together. It means that a cardinal can make both bishop-like diagonal moves and knight-like L-shaped jumps.
  • Marshall - it combines abilities of a knight and a rook. It means that a marshall can make both rook-like vertical and horizontal moves and knight-like L-shaped jumps.

Each player starts a game with one cardinal (on the G column) and one marshall (on the F column). The following picture shows the starting position of Embassy Chess:

The rules are the same as for standard Chess with the following differences:
  • When a pawn reaches the last row (from the player's point of view), it can be promoted to a queen, a rook, a bishop, a knight, a cardinal or a marshall.
  • The castling is made, as in standard Chess, with the King and a Rook. With either of two choices, move the King next to the Rook, or move the King one square from the Rook, and then move the Rook over and next to the King as in standard Chess.
