Could Chess Ever Be A Casino Game?

As chess players and writers for a chess site, a lot of our lives are consumed with chess and answering questions that are chess-related. Recently, we had a great discussion about the future of chess and how it could possibly grow in the future.

A lot of ideas were presented, but the best was the potential of chess becoming a casino game in the future. Now, there are some obvious reservations and the point of this article is to show how chess could one day become a casino game.

Popularity

One of the biggest points about chess is, that despite it being difficult to turn into a casino game, it is still absolutely massive. With it even having a part in pop culture, with Queens Gambit and the original X-Men films, the popularity of chess is unmatched by most games and this is where our first point lies.

Why Would Chess Be A Casino Game?

Let's say, you went onto a betting app right now or you were looking for the best casino app for UK players, either way, you will find a huge range of markets and things to bet on and this includes the betting industry's newest obsessions like e-sports.

Now this is where our first point lands, whether you are a person who believes chess is a sport, or whether you are the opposite and you don't agree - either way, it doesn't matter. E-sports has had a similar debate for years and now betting on e-sports is one of the biggest new markets around. Chess betting could be a similar market.

Using the biggest chess tournaments in the world, building odds and adding betting markets so people can bet on the games and even do some in-plays of where the next piece will be moved to, could make for some interesting bets and some we would definitely be a part of.

As A Casino Game

Now, when you think of a casino game, you think about poker, blackjack, slots and other games in vain. The question is, how do we make that into a game that players can bet on at casinos or on online casinos?

Well, this is a challenge but we gave it a go anyway, and we think we have come up with a good way to make the game feel fun and most importantly, work.

We think our ideas are good but need some work, the first is treating it almost like roulette. You pick a colour, in this instance, we will say black or white, and a simulated chess game is played.

If you picked the white colour and the first piece to get captured is black, then you win and vice versa. Using the simulated games means that the captures could happen quicker which allows the bets to flow quicker.

Our thought process here was to imagine you and some friends at a casino table and you placing money on black and then placing money on white and you all patiently waiting for the verdict of who won the money.

We think it could be really fun, but the follow-through of the plan is harder than coming up with the idea.

Would People Bet On Chess?

I think overall, this is what it boils down to. Chess is one of the biggest games in the world with a deep and rich culture that has lasted centuries. Because of this, if there was a chess game in casinos, I think we would see a shocking amount of people try it out.

Not just this, but also if we looked at chess as an e-sport, we would see a huge market for chess and one that any casino could capitalize on right now.
