Ewe: LOL..a very constructive post!!

Want something more constructive?

Everything costs money, even good service.  Take a look at "Player list"   Of 1226 pages are 16 (sixteen!!) paying members.

Fencer needs more money....how?   Thats easy.....Encourage more people to pay..  16 of 1226 is a p in the Ocean imo.

The price isnt so high, even people with "personal reasons" can afford it

Subject: BrainKing to load faster
I myself have speed issues from time to time, but I think it is fair to say that Fencer can't do much about it since the problem lies outside of the server that he maintains.... but at the same time the user can't do much since it lies outside of the house we live in. But I did write some tips awhile back which have helped me with some of my speed issues:

Computers (coan.net, 2007-03-12 20:16:01)

The only tip that I would add to that would be on the message boards, change the "Messages per page" to a lower number. (The less amount of data on the page - the less that has to flow past those "slow" points in between BrainKing & you.)

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = == = = = = =

I would still like to suggest to Fencer about a "very basic" version of BrainKing - a version that will have just the basic information - just enough to play games and such. (with a link back to the full version when they need more information). Yea, normally when things are fast - those "extra" things will take about 1/2 of a second extra to load - but when users encounter that "slow" point - those extra things could easily take 5-10 seconds longer to load.... and if you could take that extra information out, then even though the site will still be as quick - it will look to the user to be extra fast since they will have less data to wait on through those slow points of the internet.

AbigailII: I have promised to be nice and not to provoke any further flamewars, so please forgive me if I don't answer the first question about keeping current customers and attracting new ones. I have my numbers and my opinion.

Regarding the second question, I haven't probably made the exact expression - of course it's only up to us where the firewall is connected to but, just in order to get a faster line, we moved our servers to another serverhousing company last year. Our meters say that the upstream line is fast enough to ensure a very good response, at least where it can reach. Of course, there is a possibility have our servers hooked at a dedicated super fast mega line, but it is not worth a tenfold of the current monthly fee I am already paying. Expenses must be reasonable too.

Subject: Re: Is it just me? or is this site slower than a cheapskate at the checkout counter
Fencer: Whatever happens OUTSIDE BrainKing, i.e. on the way to the user's web browser, is not (and cannot be) our problem.

Well, if your goal is to keep your current customers, and to attract more, unsatisfied customers should be your problem, whether you can do something about or not, and whether the problems are real or imaginary.

Fencer: Our power ends at the outgoing port of our firewall.

Yes...., but, where your firewall ends is something you can do about. If there's a network problem, and that problem is caused by your upstream provider, then you aren't entirely powerless. You could switch provider, or get a faster pipe. I'm not saying you should, or that it's wise business wise, just pointing out that just brushing it off with "oh well, nothing we can do" is a bit short sighted. If Disney had build Disneyworld at the end of a dirt road, and people would complain it's hard to reach, Disney wouldn't say "oh, but the lines in the park are short, and it isn't our problem there's only a dirt road to our park".

A website cannot control the speed of the Internet, but it can decide where it connects to the Internet.

on this Board alone. And most of them bickering and repeat complaints that should be known by now that take nowhere but to situations like this...

I'd just like to make a suggestion: rather than loosing your temper every time you finally decide to reply to this issue, why not take the opportunity (since you're writing that article anyway) and post a proper FAQ entry on this subject. I mean, this has come up so many times I think it really earned the status of one of the most frequently asked questions in this site. Placing it on the FAQ would also make it translatable (since BrainKing.info and BrinRook currently aren't). You can even take the opportunity to collect some of the comments that have been posted are all these times and add some troubleshooting like using pings and tracerts to learn a little bit more about one's own network. It's a FAQ entry, you can make it as technical as you like... and update it easilly with suggestions from others too...

Next time someone starts the issue again simply anybody could simply post a link to the FAQ entry instead of what may look like a rude comment...
Yes, I know it won't stop people from asking and complaining, but having a place to reference them to may prevent so many of these kind of arguments...

Put it in perspective...Its a game site, not life or death. Its not your job. You dont get paid per game move so youre not losing anything if it takes a little while longer.

I love this site, even if I have slow times, and I certainly dont moan about it. Its the best of its type on the net in my opinion!
So why moan over & over again about the SAME thing? Im SICK OF READING IT so Im sure Fencer is aswell & I think I would of lost my rag alot sooner with some of you going on and on and on and on..........

ok, I think this is enough,

For months now, the complaints have been that the site has been slow.

Fencer's response has been that the site's hardware and software is running up to speed and correctly.

Several customer's response to that has been rude, sarcastic, baiting, and downright hateful. Yet everyone expects that Fencer should not get upset or react to the provocative comments to him. Maybe you all forget that he is human too.

I think this hop thing is showing, that the slowness is from the transfer on the internet and not caused by any servers in the Czech Republic.

From this point on, if you want to complain... Complain.

But the personal attacks, and baiting, and derision, WILL stop or you will be moderated just as if you were baiting anyone else on this site. (added: yes Fencer too)

Thank you.

I realize you are frustrated with the lack of speed you are experiencing.. and since it has been an ongoing problem I have been monitoring the downloads from our side over here. It seems that the problem is not coming from Brainking itself; but, from other sources. Could it possibly be your ISP or internet provider? Maybe your individual computer could stand for an upgrade??

I came on this board earlier tonight and was amazed at the way he was speaking (typing) to his customers. Is this the way people do business where he lives? If so, I pity the residents of his country. How sad it must be to live in a world where sarcasm is used daily towards people who financially support a business only to be treated as a dog.  If I am wrong to assume this we can blame Fencer for the image he is portraying of the people in Praque.

I guess what it all boils down to is the fact as long as it works for certain people and they keep paying then there is no problem. Albeit the 400 (guesstimate) or so on this side of the pond who were the first loyal yearly supporters of the site 5 or so years ago before there were more than a handful of European supporters have an issue with slowness now, that we never had before. wel that is just our tuff luck. Or am I reading this wrong? Too damn bad is how I see/read it.  (Yes, i am customer #156 who joined here when the majority of payments came from North America.)

I do think being nasty to customers is any way to deal with it. If I did that in my business I wouldn't be in business for very long.

BUT like any thing else in life. If a person isn't satisfied with the service the option is to stop paying for the service and get better service elsewhere. It is what makes or breaks businesses.

Hey! I know.. it's a conspiracy against the US and countries similar.. LOL

Furthermore, I do have one observation I would like to state.. My family has been in business now for almost 20 years.. we have both motel and cafe.. Usually we try to be polite to our customers .. for if we continued to be sarcastic to them.. we wouldn't have them support us anymore.. Is the practice of being polite limited to just a few countries?? Is where Fencer lives a country that continually belittles peeps and down talks them like they are idiots.. Please let us know now.. so we can happily spread the cheer to all the newbies so they don't waste their hard earned dollars.. unless of course they are from Fencers neck of the woods where that behavior is acceptible..

Or perhaps it is his style of life since he is still a young man in mid 30's.. similar to the immature boys over here.. is Fencer also immature?? I wouldn't expect so since he is the master of websites.. and since he has a child I would expect he also knew what patience was...

I am on ADSL 3000, but I could easily have the idea to switch to Modem or ISDN or whatever slow connection. Or I could have the same basic connection speed, but maybe my ISP has speed problems in my area from time to time, or let's too many people share bandwidth, or whatever... There are quite a couple of possible reasons for a slow connection to a specific site, and you can't tell unless you try.

I wish someone knew the answer why it is only a problem for some people. I think knowing that answer would help a lot of people.

It makes sense that it isn't specifically a brainking problem, since not everyone is experiencing the same thing. To me, if it were, everyone would be having the exact same problems. (Or it makes sense to ME anyways.. lol)

I WOULD say that over the last couple of days, it is probably the more graphic intensive pages that have been a bit slower.

TarantinoFan: I'd like to point out again, that not everybody is having the problems you are talking about. I don't have them, and there are others who don't, and who stated it here right on this board. That doesn't mean no problems exist, but it makes it kind of unlikely, that those problems are on BrainKing's side (since we don't believe in a white list theory, right?). There are many routers and networks involved when the page data is transferred around the world. I just traced it, and my route passes 13 hops, but they are located in just two networks. So my ISP has a pretty decent connection to the ISP of BrainKing, I guess. And maybe yours doesn't. And for you and all the others a striped down version of BrainKing game pages and main page (like suggested by coan.net) might really be a great idea, to cut down the transfer time. I just don't know if cheeky posts are the fastest way to get it

BTW: If there are too many images for you to load - maybe you could turn smileys off to have fewer? Have you checked your browser settings? Does it have enough memory to cache all images so you don't have to load them again with each request? Because usually an image is only loaded once and then read from the cache instead of over the internet from i.brainking.com, and thus shouldn't slow your page loading time down at all.
