Seems the problem as recorded with single mothers is that they are not getting any money of the absent fathers. The men are just not living upto their responsibilities!!
....Sex education looks like the key. But of the States in the USA.... how many will teach it?
"In the context of a radio program that examines the culture, Huckabee's comments can't be seen as an attack (which is how the Left portrayed it)"
But it is all as it stands a one dimensional argument. Just using money as a means to evaluate how successful parents are at doing a thing that in the end has no bearing on money. But on raising children.
... It's not an attack.. just a very limited look at the whole problem!!
Subject: Re: This was not part of the argument I put forth. It has nothing to do with good parenting vrs bad. It has to do with poverty and single parenting. I pointed out the statistical reality.
Artful Dodger: But such an a statement can be said to be rather one dimensional regarding one parent families. Also, as such this could be a one generation event and has in that no real value.
It also has not looked at why there are single parent families, ignoring that times have changed and so have people. Many single mothers now know that they are not tied to living a lie such as "healthy two-parent family structures" if the appearance is just a mask.
The cost to kids living in a house that is broken..... how do you measure that in dollars?
"Wall street bailouts were a mistake. But there's far more to a story than that which Jon tried to present. Government regulations are more at fault than is bad management. Some banks failed because they were greedy. But they took advantage of the loose regulations given to them by the democrats. Fanny and Freddie failed because of direct government involvement in financial decision making. "
Big Brother speaks???
"The Wall Street Journal celebrated the agreement to end such restrictions with an editorial declaring that the banks had been unfairly scapegoated for the Great Depression. The headline of one Journal article detailing the impact of the proposed law declared, "Finally, 1929 Begins to Fade."
This comment underscores the greatest irony in the banking deregulation bill. Legislation first adopted to save American capitalism from the consequences of the 1929 Wall Street Crash is being abolished just at the point where the conditions are emerging for an even greater speculative financial collapse. The enormous volatility in the stock exchange in recent months has been accompanied by repeated warnings that stocks are grossly overvalued, with some computer and Internet stocks selling at prices 100 times earnings or even greater.
And there is a much more recent experience than 1929 to serve as a cautionary tale. A financial deregulation bill was passed in the early 1980s under the Reagan administration, lifting many restrictions on the activities of savings and loan associations, which had previously been limited primarily to the home-loan market. The result was an orgy of speculation, profiteering and outright plundering of assets, culminating in collapse and the biggest financial bailout in US history, costing the federal government more than $500 billion. The repetition of such events in the much larger banking and securities markets would be beyond the scope of any federal bailout."
Rupert Murdoch has been given clearance to 'own' BskyB. One condition... he has to sell off Sky News. I don't think he's to fussed as it's losing money anyway.
RBS created their near collapse (only prevented by Joe Voter bailing them out via the UK government) by neglecting to obtain complete accounts of the bank they and other European banks were buying as a consortium. In the accounts of why they did not obtain the completes accounts of that bank, it was revealed that it was a done deal even without such vital info. Those accounts would have shown that the bank had a serious bad debt problem that left it for all accounts ... bankrupt.
The collapse of RBS would have caused a collapse of the world banking system.
And yet.. the banks say we cannot tell them to ensure (via a change in their bonus system) such mistakes do not by greed be done again. We are told by the banks they are angry we are taxing them..... to go into a fund to cover any more greedy bankers playing with Joe Plumbers money.
Subject: the UFT feted him with a $6,400 "Welcome, Michael" party at a Brazilian steakhouse.
That's about £3200....... Ok explain the economy of the banks still "bailed out" paying billions in bonuses (that's £1,000,000,000+) and yet holding the economies of the world to ransom saying....
.... "If you make us pay for our mess and stop us from profiting while Joe Voter suffers... we'll leave and cause your economies more harm.. we don't care!!"
What about UK company British Gas who yet again makes record profits while their customers say "why are our bills going up so much more than inflation"..
.. They would move... but all the other energy companies are doing the same.
Artful Dodger: That's about £3200....... Ok explain the economy of the banks still "bailed out" paying billions in bonuses (that's £1,000,000,000+) and yet holding the economies of the world to ransom saying....

Subject: Re: But the union can threaten the voters with disruptions of services. Union strength comes from the power to say, "Do things our way or we'll hurt you."
Artful Dodger: One of the reasons unions started as a result of exploitation by the bosses. Just as did the Suffragettes arise from the lack of votes for women.
A distinct set of definitions for the word republic evolved in the United States. In common parlance a republic is a state that does not practice direct democracy but rather has a government indirectly controlled by the people. This is known as representative democracy. This understanding of the term was originally developed by James Madison, and notably employed in Federalist Paper No. 10. This meaning was widely adopted early in the history of the United States, including in Noah Webster's dictionary of 1828. It was a novel meaning to the term, representative democracy was not an idea mentioned by Machiavelli and did not exist in the classical republics.[48]
The term republic does not appear in the Declaration of Independence, but does appear in Article IV of the Constitution which "guarantee[s] to every State in this Union a Republican form of Government." What exactly the writers of the constitution felt this should mean is uncertain. The Supreme Court, in Luther v. Borden (1849), declared that the definition of republic was a "political question" in which it would not intervene. In two later cases, it did establish a basic definition. In United States v. Cruikshank (1875), the court ruled that the "equal rights of citizens" were inherent to the idea of republic. The opinion of the court from In re Duncan[49] (1891) held that the "right of the people to choose their government" is also part of the definition. Due to the 1875 and 1891 court decisions establishing basic definition, in the first version (1892) of the Pledge of Allegiance, which included the word republic, and like Article IV which refers to a Republican form of government, the basic definition of republic is implied and continues to do so in all subsequent versions, including the present edition, by virtue of its consistent inclusion.
Beyond these basic definitions the word republic has a number of other connotations. W. Paul Adams observes that republic is most often used in the United States as a synonym for state or government, but with more positive connotations than either of those terms.[50] Republicanism is often referred to as the founding ideology of the United States. Traditionally scholars believed this American republicanism was a derivation of the liberal ideologies of John Locke and others developed in Europe.
The political philosophy of republicanism initiated by Machiavelli was thought to have had little impact on the founders of the United States. In the 1960s and 1970s a revisionist school lead by the likes of Bernard Bailyn began to argue that republicanism was just as or even more important than liberalism in the creation of the United States.[51] This issue is still much disputed and scholars like Kramnick completely reject this view.[52]
Subject: Re: A cultural mosaic is a country divided.
Artful Dodger: Says someone who has never lived in a multicultural society.
The area I live in is a great mix of cultures. Muslims, Christians, Hindu's, Sikhs, Turkish, Chinese.. even Aussies!!.. We all get along... as we all in our area have respect for each other.
.. And we get a great selection and variety of shops and services based on the various cultures... complimentary medicines, clothes, foods (if you are like me and love cooking a great thing) ... and the shops have transformed certain areas from nearly empty shopping areas to bustling areas of trade which boosts the income of traditional British shops purely from the likes of passing trade.
Artful Dodger: No... if you took the time to read rather than quote, you'll see that in the case of British Prime Minister David Cameron he was talking about "state multiculturalism"
David Cameron has criticised "state multiculturalism" in his first speech as prime minister on radicalisation and the causes of terrorism.
At a security conference in Munich, he argued the UK needed a stronger national identity to prevent people turning to all kinds of extremism.
Subsequent lawsuits addressing the detainee issue were considered and resolved by the Supreme Court. Rasul v. Bush found the US courts did have jurisdiction over the detainees. Hamdi v. Rumsfeld said detainees have a right to contest their detention: they are entitled to habeas corpus protections. Hamdan v. Rumsfeld tested the military tribunals President Bush created to bring the detainees to justice. The Supreme Court found the tribunals in violation of Common Article 3 of the Geneva Conventions, and their existence to be illegal, absent a basis in federal statute. The decision was handed down June 29, 2006.
Hamdan v. Rumsfeld put on display the Bush Administration's guilt in committing war crimes. This is one of the huge dots. It will be connected to another one shortly.
Technically under the Geneva Convention.. every single President of the USA since the beginning of the Cold war is a war criminal. More specifically since the CIA started getting involved in the killing of folks outside the USA in the name of democracy. As the CIA are civilians and not soldiers and therefore wear no uniform whilst either taking part in killings or supporting killings.
If it's so unconstitutional Pedro.. why can a petition be raised to get a constitutional amendment added to Florida's state constitution in the 2012 ballot?
Subject: Re: ffshore oil drilling moratorium, imposed by the administration in 2010, was unconstitutional.
Pedro Martínez: I'm surprised that in light of recent events in Egypt you keep on about constitution!!
"Am I correct in thinking that when I do something that is prohibited by law or other standards, the government authorities will be authorized to act contrary to law or even constitution in order to take a remedial measure?"
If you have broken the law you seem to think and feel that you are above the law and get away with it, based on some old constitution that (in the matter of deep oil drilling) never was designed to deal with some of the problems that in todays day and age we face?
... by the laws of the UK I can still as an Englishman go and shoot and kill a Scotsman with a Longbow (so I was told by a soldier about a year ago)..... does that make such a killing lawful and right?
It is illegal for anyone in the USA to import goods created by prisoners. Yet.. the USA depends on it's inmates to create many goods.
.. double standards.
The three strikes and your out rule. On QI last night to incidents were brought to light of people getting life sentences for minor crimes like nicking video tapes... 25 years for shoplifting.
ie the USA imprisons more per capita then any other nation in the world.
Subject: Re: Anyone of them could rise to power depending on where the Egyptian military see what is most convenient for themselves
Übergeek 바둑이: I don't think the military can dictate. Not this time. As to what kinda government ... let us hope democracy will at last have a chance in Egypt. Something they have been denied to 30 years odd, the young adults are doing something the older Egyptians have not had the guts to do.
why.. because the right to revolt is spreading throughout the middle east.
One could say that the support for the 'El Presidente' of Egypt over the last 30 years was an artificial peace. That anyone challenging his government was arrested, imprisoned or tortured. Isn't then the USA admins supporting the regime yet another example of double standards!!
.. which has cost Americans billions of dollars...
Subject: Re: but she was saying things about someone from her own party.
Tuesday: She was, as have other right wingers in the ultimate aim of being a perfect 'Conservative'... it seems being a 'witch finder general' pays well!!
Five years on and the scandal of News International (specifically the News of the World) phone tapping has still yet to reach it's conclusion. New information over who and how much was tapped is still under police investigation.
Lord Prescott has revealed that the police have "significant new evidence" and will be contacting a number of potential new victims.
The cost of out of court settlements has already cost the News group about £2 million pounds, and with others taking legal action will cost Rupert Murdoch's company much more.
Subject: Re: Sarah Palin Is Worried About Religious Extremists - In Egypt
The Col: I would have thought going by some of the shared ideals Sarah Palin and other right wing Christians.. they would have got on well with their extreme Muslim brothers.

* Most populous Arab nation, with 84.5 million inhabitants * Authoritarian President Hosni Mubarak has ruled for 30 years * Protests against corruption, lack of democracy, inflation, unemployment * Unrest triggered by overthrow of President Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali of Tunisia
The US government had been planning to topple the Egyptian President for the past three years – that is according to diplomatic cables released by WikiLeaks. The files show Washington had secretly been backing leading figures behind the uprising.
Earlier on Saturday, in a televised address to the nation, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has dismissed his government and promised formation of a new Cabinet would be announced soon.
“I have requested the government to step down today, and I will designate a new government as of tomorrow to carry out new duties and to account for the priorities of the coming era,” Mubarak said in his speech, which is the first time he has appeared in public since protests broke out Tuesday in Egypt.
Tens of thousands have taken to the streets across Egypt in protest of Mubarak's regime and calling for his ouster. Troops have been trying to enforce a curfew in the capital, Cairo, where the ruling party's headquarters has been set afire by demonstrators.
Analysts have pointed fingers at the US, accusing them of trying to change the politics of this regime. Webster Tarpley, an investigative journalist, thinks that the CIA is fuelling “mob rule” across the Arab world to change the power structure.
Subject: Re: Unlike the payload of all previously-developed intercontinental ballistic missiles, the new weapon can hit several targets located at great distance from each other.
Artful Dodger: ... what a MIRV...multiple independently targetable reentry vehicle.
... that's been around for years and the USA has had (such as the peacekeeper MX W87 missile) them just as long about as the former USSR, if not a bit earlier.
Just the USSR got a bit better at it than the USA.
Subject: Re: who provide for the other 60% (public sector)
SL-Mark:
"): The 60% (actually I think it is nearer 65%) includes all those who are funded from the public purse. So yes, it includes many other services, all of whom consume wealth."
Well.. the office for national statistics says the figure of public v private employment is 20% working in the public sector and 80% working in the private.
... ie at the moment your whole argument seems to based bad data and therefore your whole point is pointless.
Sorry I took time to check your data.. saved you alot of pointless defending of untrue statements.
As to "No, you can only include tax from the private sector in the determination"
Subject: Re: Libel would be a civil offence not a criminal offence.
Justaminute: I'd say about 95% of the time you'd be right. In some cases it might start as a libel act and through such as perjury goto to a criminal case.
It's a bit like trespassing, you cannot be prosecuted for it unless other factors come into play, but they are the likes of criminal damage and maybe loss of earnings. Then it gets to get complicated.
Subject: Re: OMG are you saying our MPs are corrupt? That is libel and happens to be a criminal offence in this country, unless of course, you have evidence “beyond reasonable doubt.”
Subject: Re: who provide for the other 60% (public sector)
SL-Mark: Is that like essential services such as road maintenance, bin collections (both often tendered out to private companies) ... or straight forward council and government workers.
"It is your beloved socialist leaders that got us in to this mess. The health service is overflowing with bureaucrats, making these life saving services unaffordable"
I think you'll find that the current bureaucratic mess dates back to the Thatcher years. I hardly call her socialist
"40% of the UK working population are wealth creators (private sector) who provide for the other 60% (public sector) as well as the infirm, elderly, unemployed and young."
40%+60%+ how much do the infirm and unemployed working age people account for?
"Ah tax (and only tax from the private sector can be counted),"
Nope. Taxes come from many sources... even your council workers pay taxes as do all government workers. Plus in the case of the NHS much of the budget goes on buying equipment from private companies. I know... I've worked for a company providing hospitals with artificial joint kits.
Subject: Re: OMG are you saying our MPs are corrupt? That is libel and happens to be a criminal offence in this country, unless of course, you have evidence “beyond reasonable doubt.”
SL-Mark: And as such then you'll know it's not just about dirty hospitals re MRSA, the overuse of antibiotics is part to blame, the lack of investment and research into new antibiotics for decades has a part in the problem. There maybe a link to a certain stomach worm that was eradicated (it was harmless) that may have had given for it's food certain health benefits linking to the overuse of antibiotics nowadays.
You'll also know that rates of deaths from the likes of MRSA are dropping. That simple things like visitors using alcohol cleaner on their hands...
... and yes.. the cuts to fully employed long term cleaning staff... "unskilled" workers who's work saves lives.
