This should prove to be an interesting discussion - about limiting discussion. The mere fact that you are saying you will have a discussion is quite refreshing. I have come from a site where sometimes things just are "done" without discussion. Even if you don't agree with some on the site, it is nice that you are willing to discuss it.

Hrqls: I am not sure what they hide. Once again, it depends on how you handle the threads. You can leave it so that the Tree is always open. Then you can use your glance - if you want. It makes it easier to glance by a whole thread if you are unconcerned about regional flags, but are looking for a thread about new games for example.

whatdidyousay: not hiding stuff on purpose .. but usually a thread starts about something .. which is the main subject .. and then slightly changes into a slightly different subject .. not too much difference to justify a new tree .. but still something different :)

i do agree though .. lately when i come online in the morning i saw 200+ new posts on the general board .. and that was just done in about 10 hours of my night .. i then read the few first of the new ones .. and the last ones .. a tree would be easier that way .. but still it would be easy to miss something you could now stumble on accidently :)

i have been on many boards which have the tree layout .. and somehow i didnt like it .. but it might just be me who might be old fashioned ;)

I think it would be an asset to invite the whole of your fellowshop for a tourney with only one invitation...I mean, not sending out like 40 of them...

Apparently there is more support for non-threaded (non-tree outline) discussion boards. I prefer the tree, but I can live without it.

I have been playing some battle boats...I wonder what the game would be like if each shot hit the nine (actual shot plus neighboring spots) locations...kind of like atomic chess. OR..a shot could hit 5 spots...the one targeted and the ones above, below, and to the sides.

Just thinking out loud....well, hey, at least I am "Trying" to think

i think you'd have to give the second player a turn if he is destroyed. If (s)he destroys the enemy it's a tie. Thus taking away the first turn advantage.

Fencer.....

It drives me crazy not knowing what color frog my opponent has gotten in froglet and anti-froglet....so I constantly have to go over to the game history section to find out the last move. Is there anyway to somehow display what color frog your opponent has captured?

Thanks

to Dresden:

Corner Chess and Fortress Chess are best to be compared with special types of Shuffle Chess because of the missing castling ability. Smirf could handle those and FRC too. Thus it could be accepted to join their boards in a kind of FRC Compatibility Group

SMIRF Engine
Subject: Re: Renaming of discussion forums
Modified by SMIRF Engine (22. January 2005, 17:46:42)
to bwildman: Of course castling is valid in FRC / Chess960. But because an FRC engine should support all valid FRC-FEN positions it automatically would support all variants without castlings, too. Some engines are limited to support a maximum of 16 pieces a color. But Smirf is able to have the complete board filled with pieces. Thus it could support a lot of variants based on 8x8 standard or 10x8 extended Capablanca piece set. May be it would be better to separate Fortress Chess, because it has more than 16 pieces a color?

Subject: I see one problem with the FRC Chess 960
Computers! Maybe it's too much for humans to know all 960 starting position, but that sure doesn't stop a computer. Especially nowadays. For people, that's three orders of magnitude. Almost like making the start of the game an extra one and a half moves to think ahead before the game starts. This will work with people and the Chess will be more on how well you can move the pieces and how they work together, instead by rote and memorization. Computers on the other hand can start with all 960 positions and start working things out way in advance and have nice book ready for when the game starts. With the time it takes on the internet, even more so. This FRC Chess 960 is just a temporary solution for computer aided games, but I think it will work quite well with peple.

SMIRF Engine
Subject: Re: Renaming of discussion forums
to bwildman: No reason for that. Because I am just about to write such an engine, I tend to use such criteria to characterize variants. It is clear that most people would use very different approaches to group or separate chess variants.
