Hawaiian Checkers
Konane, or Hawaiian Checkers, is a simple strategy game which combines rules of Checkers and Froglet.
Start position and game object
Konane is played on a standard 64 square chess board. Each player has 32 pieces and the game starts with a full board - white pieces on black squares and black pieces on white squares:
The object of this game is to reach a position where your opponent cannot make a legal move.
Movement of pieces
Black player starts the game. The first move is special because each player removes one piece from the board. There are special rules to choose the piece to remove:
Black player must remove a piece which is located on the longest diagonal (A8 to H1). Furthermore, he has to choose either a corner piece (A8 or H1) or a central one (D5 or E4).
White player follows by removing a piece which is orthogonally adjacent to the empty square. For example, if black removes the D5 piece, white must remove one of the following ones - C5, E5, D4, D6.
When the first move is done, all other moves are the jump ones - a player must jump over opponent's piece and remove it from the board. All jumps are horizontal or vertical only, diagonal jumps are not allowed. See the next picture:
If, after jumping, it is possible to jump over another opponent's piece, the player can capture this piece too. It means that the player can capture several pieces in one move. Unlike in Checkers, the multiple captures are not mandatory, a player can choose to submit the move even if it is possible to jump over the next piece.
There is also one important rule - a multiple jump must be done in a horizontal or vertical line, it is not allowed to change the direction while jumping. The following picture shows the black piece capture two white pieces:
Please note that black player cannot extend the multiple jump by capturing the C7 piece as well because it would break the vertical line of this move. He can, however, capture this piece at the next move.
How to finish the game
The game is finished when one player cannot make a legal move. This player loses the game. Play this game
(hide) If you want to play a game with an opponent of a similar level, you can define a required BKR range for a new game invitation. Then nobody with a BKR outside this range will be able to see/accept it. (Katechka) (show all tips)
