I guess in Huckabee's right wing world, Natalie Portman should have worn a Scarlet P to the Oscars or stayed home in shame. Nevermind that she is engaged to the perspective father & he is involved with the pregnancy. Often the reason for the poverty among single moms is the fact that the men abandon them and give no financial support. But, in right wing world, lets blame the woman and heap shame upon her. After all, she is the reason for the "original sin", right?
Temo: Re: Use of homophobia, homophobic, and homophobe has been criticized as pejorative against those with differing value positions.
Bwild: Sexual orientation has no moral connection or equivelency to pedophilia or incest, which are non-consentual violations of children. Besides, most people who engage in those 2 practices are heterosexual. Equating homosexuality with those things is an unfounded scare tactic that has been around for a long, long time. MLK said that "no lie can live forever", but this one is very persistent and harmful.
Temo: Re: Use of homophobia, homophobic, and homophobe has been criticized as pejorative against those with differing value positions.
Bwild: It is agreed that the terms surrounding homophobia are often recklessly & reactionarily thrown around by those us who advocate for LGBT inclusiveness. It often does not enhance constructive dialogue.
It is also true, however, that the American Psychiatric Association and all other reputable professional psychological organization reject reparitive therapy for homosexuality, and many studies verify therapies which try to change sexual orientation are harmful. It is, therefore, submitted that any finding by an "ex-gay" organization is suspect.
In addition, it is also true that many of the most vehement anti-gay politicians are caught with hands in the proverbial cookie jar. They deserve to be taken to task by Gay rights activists.
The discourse needs to be toned down across the board. We can do better than constantly using violent metaphors which could encourage people predisposed to violence to act on it regardless of ideation.
But the story of the abysmal mental health system is rarely assessed or paid attention to. It is largely ignored until such tragedies take place. First of all, there were plenty of warning signs that Jared Loughner is mentally ill & predisposed to violence. Yet, nothing was done to get him into treatment before this tragedy took place. Arizona even has laws which allow for involuntary commitment before violent acts are committed.
Studies have shown that people with psychiatric disorders who adhere to treatment and stay on medication are no more likely to commit violent crimes than the general population. Yet, state & federal budgets for mental health are the 1st to see the axe and many community mental health centers are working with the same funding they had in the 70s. Until recently, there was no parity for mental health treatment by insurance companies. Psychiatric facilities are closed and community followup is almost nonexistent. As a result, many people with these illnesses are often warehoused in our prison system living in squalor and getting little real treatment. Or, many of them are found untreated in the streets, or families are forced deal with severe cases without much support.
Temo: Re: one thing in common–they are all isolated from day to day patient care; and therefore, are insulated from the real practice of the art of medicine. It makes it easy to see patients as a cost center to be controlled.
rod03801: Most of Obamacare does not take effect until 2013. Your rediculous rate increase likely has more to do with your greedy, unregulated insurance companies arbitrarily hiking up your policy and raising your deductable for an outrageous profit. Obamacare is an easy smoke screen to cover their inexcusable greed.
Temo: he lost an election for speaking out against Rush and his insanity
Tuesday: It may have been Representative Bob Inglis (R-SC) who spoke out against Rush & Beck. He lost big in the GOP primary to the Tea Party candidate. Yes. That's the same Tea Party "revolution" funded mainly by Rupert Murdoch and the oil barren Koch Brothers - not the grass roots.
Artful Dodger: The epithets are hurled both ways. Conservatives try to marginalize liberals by calling them communists, socialists, racists against Whites, Nazies, holding up pictures of Obama with a Hitler mustache, continuing to spread rumors about his religion, etc,
Artful Dodger: Sharon Angle, Rand Paul, Ken Buck, etc. I don't blame their handlers for keeping them out of the press. They all have bad cases of foot-in-mouth disease. Then there is Nikki Haley in SC. Our illustrious GOP nominee for Gov. She calls for accountability in state gov't, but she hasn't paid taxes in 6 year, and released her emails 3 mos. after rumors spread about affairs via email. She is just sitting around waiting for Sarah Palin's "coat tails" to kick in for the General Election.
The Republicans are so self righteous & arrogant about taking over the House & Senate that they could be overplaying their hand. I'd be carefull about putting out such lofty expectations. You could be disappointed on election night. But, unlike the GOP, I don't have a crystal ball, so, I'm not making any grandiose pronouncements.
Artful Dodger: That's true right now, but we have 2 mos left. Plenty of time for the radical "Tea Party" favorites who are taking over your party to ruin it for ya.
Temo: Re: FDR's policies prolonged Depression by 7 years, UCLA economists calculate
Artful Dodger: Re. FDR, we know what actually did happen. Your sources can only talk about what might of happened in a reverse scenario. Conservatives site these things as absolute fact, which they are not.
Temo: Re: FDR's policies prolonged Depression by 7 years, UCLA economists calculate
Artful Dodger: More speculation about what might have happened if we had gone with Herbert Hoover in 1932. What actually happened as a result of the New Deal.
Artful Dodger: Nobody promised that "ObamaCare" would result in cost savings or reduce the deficit miraculously overnight. It is too early to pronounce it a failure.
Temo: Re: The point I am trying to make is that Moslems do worship the same God
(V): I wasn't planning to enter into this "debate" because I am not a scholar on the Bible or the Qu'ran. In fact, I don't believe they are the final canons. I agree with most of what V has to say here. My views are Unitarian-Universalist who do not follow the traditional or Orthodox views about the Triune God. People with my views were general cut off from the Christian debate in the 3rd Century when Constantine convened the Council of Nicea designed to form a singular religion of his state. They declared the Triune viiew as the only legitamate view of God and branded anyone else as a heretic. They also tossed any books in the Bible that contridicted what they called "prophesies". People were also branded as heretics from that time on who did not believe that everyone who did not agree with their views were sent to eternal damnation. Some of us survived, however. Both Muslims and Christians take the latter view about their religion being the only true one, and that their Holy books are the final word make their world ripe for war over religion. Both of their Gods descend from the birthline of Abraham, a fact which the extremist on both sides wish to delete from their history.
Temo: Re: Rep. Eric Cantor (R., Va.), the House GOP whip, has released a 13-minute video/mini-documentary about President Obama and the national debt.
Artful Dodger: I do think Cantor & the Republicans in this video do make some sense about the debt. I do care about it, but no one has a crystal ball. I believe that the Administration is making some hard decisions about the spending. Right now, they are trying to divert desaster by using gov't funds to help people who are falling through the safety net, and plug a hole in the dyke by saving things like teacher's job in poor states. Unlike Libertarians, I believe that gov't must intervene at times. My hope is that the deficit will start to regress as people are able to find permanent jobs. But, I have no Crystal Ball either, & neither do Libertarians. Unfortunately here, I think we have to live with a lot of ambiguity now.
Übergeek 바둑이: Many Islamic Republics, including our "allie" Saudi Arabia do not allow Christian Churches to be built in their countries or allow other religions to proselytize. Newt Gingrich and Glenn Beck like to continually bring that fact up. The reality is, however, is that the US is not a Theocracy like the Islamic Republics; although many of the "Christian Nation" crowd seek to change that and revise history.
I think a lot of the ratcheting up the rhetoric does center around stoking the fires of prejudice against Islam. However, a lot of the the arguments center around how to honored those who died on 9/11. I also think that your anti-war memorial is a good idea.
Tuesday: #10 on Roger Ebert's list, his op-ed piece, seems to allude to something important here. It has been 10 years and no decision has been made about how the victims should be honored in the space of the Twin Towers. There have been endless political debates, designs, etc about what should be done here. There is no space to collectively commemorate the victims of this horrible act. I think if such a place existed, the intensity of the debate over the mosque would have been lessened, and calmer heads might have prevailed.
Tuesday: They can all have elements of truth, but none of them are perfect or have a monopoly on truth.
To quote a song I heard recently: It's not your Yahweh who scares me. It's not your Allah who scares me. It's not your Jesus that scares me. I'm afraid of what you do in the name of your God.
Temo: Re:But the NT says if you live by the old law you will be judged by it.
Tuesday: Then why do so many espoused Christians utilize the so-called "Old Testament" when it is convenient to condemn those who are different? Many of them also use Revelations and John in the "New Testament" to promote intolerance of practitioners of other religions.
Artful Dodger: The Mosque was already at its site before the angry responses from the right about it being expanded. In addition there are other Mosque which have been close to the Twin Towers before 9/11. Should we tear all of them? There are also "adult entertainment" establishments close to ground zero which don't exactly honor the memory of 9/11 victims.
The only arguments against this building seems to center around the prejudice that any Muslim establishment near ground zero is evil because radical muslims were responsible for the attack. Thus, all muslims should be lumped into the same category. As you pointed out, W visited mosques to eliminate prejudice against all American Muslims. If the mosques had a history of supporting terrorist activity, it would be one thing. But, I haven't heard of any such activity.
Artful Dodger: It is legit for you to call to task sources which you feel have a liberal bias. That's part of debate. But, its funny Art. When liberals call your extreme conservative sources to task, you summarily dismiss them as not considering your idea of "legitimate arguments".
(V): Good post. From products to politics, we care less about the facts. Our gut level emotions are paramount. Facts are manipulated to play on feelings. Propaganda really does work on the masses.
Tuesday: Either she or her PR firm are brilliant at using symbolism to resonate with her base. Substance means very little if you can tap into people's collective unconscious - especially during hard times. If she is a loon, she has some pretty big weapons if she can capture the Conservative psyche. I now have a better understanding into the rabid popularity among her followers. I wouldn't underestimate it. That isn't to say I have any agreement with her.
Here is an interesting article about Sarah Palin's appeal from the left wing Huffington Post. It's not as insulting as you might think. Both sides may find it an interesting analysis of her popularity.
Artful Dodger: The negatives of AZ being front page news in November could cut both ways. The Republicans could loss a lot of their Hispanic votes and/or the Dems could loose anti-immigration votes.
Temo: Re: I agree that we conservatives...need to arm ourselves and get ready for a huge fight.
Artful Dodger: Are you actually literally saying that there is a need for armed warfare against liberals? That position is way overstating things isn't it? Particularly if, as you say, conservatives will win in a landslide this November.
Temo: Re: who sail that liberals are cockroaches and must be killed?
Artful Dodger: It seems to be a right wing talk radio thing to refer to liberals as "cockroaches" who are subhuman It quickly follows that cockroaches are to be exterminated. Micheal Savage comes to mind as someone who outright advocates death. He once told a Gay man that he should "die of Aids".
There is also Glenn Beck's now famous tirade about killing Michael Moore or hiring someone to do it for him.
You may can cite samples of this kind of talk by liberal pundits. That's not responsible either. You might also laugh this kind of propaganda off as "sarcasm", but many people do not.
