Temo: Drivecleaner Hijacking
I have also been plagued with this recently and can confirm it is specific to an ad on this site (affecting me on IE and Firefox). I do not believe it is not the result of my machine(s) being infected with spyware.

My solution was to download the flashblock add-on which has solved the problem. One of the flash ads is hijacking my browsers. It appears to happen when the add area at the top or bottom displays a blank white banner. Then the next click hijacks everything.

Not sure how to best get this resolved but thought I would pass this along.

Well, at any rate. The Google Toolbar on IE will definately stop the pop-up as I tested today.

No matter where it comes from, at least there is a solution to avoid it.

Dear Brainking support team,
Since a few days, perhaps a week or so, I've noticed that from time to time, when I click on a piece to play, a pop up raises inviting me to install "systemdoctor" on my computer.
Such an ad generated by Brainking is not nice. I assume many users will think it's a system message and will then click on it.
I think Brainking should be careful on these kind of things or the image of this site will be quickly fall down.
(sorry if my english is not perfect)

coan.net: That gave me an idea! I opened up IE6 with Google Toolbar (glad I had it on, but I didnt know that!) and put the ads back on at the bottom. Then I just randomly starting clicking on boards to see what ad came up.

The first time the Weight Watcher ad showed, it was blank with a mouse-over that said 'click to activate and use this control'. When I navigated to the next board page, The Pop-Up Blocker said it blocked a pop-up. (I cannot figure how to find out what the pop-up was). No problems after that, and I couldnt get it to do that again.

Here's a list in order of ads I saw..........

Drive Cleaner - When I use Firefox, everything is great. On my same machine, I was stuck using Internet Explorer for a little bit - and visited this site, and after visiting my second discussion board, I got the Drive Cleaner pop-up that others have talked about. Not sure if it will help Fencer, but the ad at the bottom of the page when the pop-up came up was for WeightWatchers.com.

So when others see the pop-up, what ad is up on the BrainKing site, since with so many complaining - and myself seeing it in person, I also believe it is something on the BrainKing site that is triggering this pop-up.

Is anyone else here using/or know anything about Extension Developers Extension for Firefox used for creating Firefox Extensions (Add-ons) ?

If so, could someone tell me what information is needed (and what can be left out) in Extension Builder when editing the install.rdf file ?
(GUID and Version number are already there)

I know i have to make sure Firefox (not worried about T'bird & Mozilla suite) is ticked & Min / Max versions are included, but how much of the rest of that info is really needed to create the build .XPI file ?

I think i may create a Firefox Fellowship to discuss Firefox and all its different aspects.

To avoid unacceptable image distortion, I'd suggest either beginning with an image that's close to a multiple of 40x50, or else cropping it to approximately those relative dimensions, before you use that online tool to create a 40x50 image.

I hope you like it! I've had good results.

Temo: Re: javascript and different browsers:
diogenysos:

I just read your message. I tested with two browsers. MS IE 6 is not my favorite, but it had no problem handling any of the scripts. Seamonkey 1.1.1 had no problems either. I used Sea Moneky in two machines. One is a Windows XP machine. The other is a Debian Linux machine. Both worked just fine. Linux comes with a browser called Koqueror. I tested with Konqueror 3.3.2 and the drop down menu works fine. However, the image swap failed.

First, about the drop-down menus. What browsers are causing problems? The reason why I don't like drop-down menus so much is because Mozilla browsers (that means Netscape, Fire Fox and Sea Monkey) handle DIV tags differently from the Microsoft browsers. Usually these drop down menus work by hiding and unhiding a DIV, and manipulating the Z-index to bring it to the front. Some work by positioning the DIV outside the normal screen margins so that it is not visible inside the normal computer display. Most of these require some checking of the browser version and they will manipulate the DIV differently depending on what browser is being used. You will have to read each individual browser documentation, and search out there for other versions of the drop-down menu to see if somebody has found a more stable approach.

About the image swap, I have found that this type of link is rather unstable:

<a href="javascript:swap('bild02','../images/coronasplaya1.jpg')">

For some reason some browsers have a hard time with inline Javascript like that. It works well in my XP machine with all browsers. My Linux machine failed with Koqueror as the browser.

Your Javascript function is perfectly correct and I have used a similar one before with great success and no problems in any browser:

function swap( bildname, tauschbild ) {
document.images[ bildname ].src = tauschbild;
}

Try replacing the links by a link like the ones below.

<a onMouseOver="swap( 'bild02' , '../images/coronasplaya1.jpg ' ); return true">
<a onClick="swap( 'bild02' , '../images/coronasplaya1.jpg ' ); return true">

Rather than having the Javascript inline in the HREF field, these use a mouse event such as the mouse moving over the link, or clicking the link. This type of link works great for swapping images. You can complete the tag by adding a target, and swapping to a different image when the mouse moves out of the link.

<a href="my_target.html" onMouseOver="swap( 'bild02' , '../images/coronasplaya1.jpg ' ); return true" onMouseOut="swap( 'bild02' , '../images/some_image.jpg ' ); return true">

I hope this helps.

Check if they offer a wireless router even. The nice thing about that is you then have a choice of using the ethernet line or the wireless connection.

Most laptops these days come with the wireless card installed, so if you ever get a laptop you are all set.

And if Verizon ever offers Fios in your area, snap it up! Its worth every penny and even better than cable.

rod03801: For the AT&T/Yahoo DSL, you will also need a DSL modem which they will provide to you.

NOTE: This is me speaking from memory - things may have changed - I think now they even offer higher speeds for more $$$$ - but the lowest $14.95 a month deal is still very quick compared to dial-up.... and a good place to start in my opinion.

You need a DSL modem, which they will provide for you. It use to be like a year contract, you buy they modem for $79.99 - but could send away for a $79.99 rebate - so the modem would be "free". (NOTE: The rebate comes in an envelope that looks like junk mail - with the rebate check attached at the bottom of the letter. So make sure you don't quickly throw away junk mail, and be on the lookout for the rebate. I guess they figured they can save some money if people throw away their rebate check instead of cashing it.)

It also comes with a CD that you stick in your computer and will walk through all the step to setting everything up. Annoying for someone like me who wants to skip to the last step, but nice for people who could use the instructions on what to plug in where.

Your computer will either need a network card or USB. I'm not sure of other requirements for the PC - probable on their website - well whatever phone company you are going through - guess I'm writing assuming you are also under AT&T/Yahoo - but I guess you might be somewhere else - which in that case, the information above probable does not apply much.

coan.net: Nah, I don't NEED very high speed. You need to remember, I just came from WebTV, so even dialup seems very fast. LOL... Having gotten a taste of the goodies available with a computer, I am disappointed with some things I just still can't do. (The slowness of downloading almost anything, for one!) I could live with it, though. But, when I received the email advertising the $14.95/month, which is only slightly higher than I am paying to get online now, it peaked my interest. Are there other costs I'm not considering? I believe the email even said the needed equipment was included. I wonder what system requirements there are, though? Maybe my computer isn't good enough to bother with highspeed?

My cable company does offer deals if you bundle it with phone and cable, but it is still about $30/month. Which I suppose is something to consider since I now pay about $50/month for cable. (Their deal is the standard all 3 for $100/month that I think most offer)

LOL.. too much info to have to consider. I need someone to just make the decision for me! lol...

Thanks for the input.

Temo: Re: DSL vs. Broadband
rod03801: At my old house, I had the (what is now called AT&T/Yahoo DSL), and I loved it.

It was cheap - about $15 a month for first year, and fast - well fast compared to dial-up. Plus for the price, if when it got close to a year, a quick call can keep that rate the same. (even though now I think it is always $15 a month - not sure)

When I moved, the AT&T/Yahoo DSL was unavailable at my new house - but Cable internet was - so I went with that. It is more expensive ($40 a month), but I also LOVE it because it is usually a lot faster then the phone DSL. I've had some minor issues with the cable - they had to come up about 4 times to replace something out on the pole - but other then those down-times, the speed is great. It would have been cheaper if we had cable TV to combo with the internet, but we don't have cable TV.

Other differences: Cable shares the speed with other connections close by. So if all your neighbors also have Cable internet, if they are doing a lot - it can also slow it down for you also. And when I say slow it down, I mean just very little - probable never down to the point of dial-up speeds. I've personally never noticed any type of slow-down where I live - then again, I don't know of any of my neighbors having cable internet.

Phone DSL is not "shared", but distance from where they have their DSL connection point can hurt speed. Chance are they will not even sell you service unless you are within a certain distance from one of those spots - so there should be no problem.

So in my opinion - go with the phone DSL - it is cheaper, unless you need very high speed, then try cable.
