This is crazy! I have 7 finished games in backgammon race and got a big fat 0 points for my 6th win.... against someone with over 1300 rating. I mean how are you supposed to know who to play if you are getting zero points after 6 games played????

24. Marzo 2005, 16:46:12

+1 is understandable, since it is rounded. So it really means anything from +0.5 to +1.49

It's the +8 that I find strange, it happens too often.

24. Marzo 2005, 16:27:41
furbster
yes, as most ohters here i tend to go up or down 8 with a win or a loss, or +1 with a player rankesd a lot lower than me, and tend to either get -11 or -14 for a loss agianst a player rated quite a bit lower than me

So if I am understand all the explanations then game count affects it as much as the win/loss!

I'll try thr formula too Pedro, thanks!

Ok I created a spreadsheet using that formula and get:

Grenv: old BKR = 2332, new BKR = 2336 (+4)
BackgammonLover: old BKR = 2126, new BKR = 2118 (-8)

and that's correct...use this formula to calculate you ratings and compare them with those the system sends you after you fininsh particular games

my point is I always seem to go up 8. I realize my opp went donw more because of fewer games played.

for example:

You are the winner.

grenv: old BKR = 2332, new BKR = 2340 (+8)
BackgammonLover: old BKR = 2126, new BKR = 2109 (-17)

Game type: Backgammon

Yes, +-8 seems to be normal for me too. I'm not completely satisfied with the rating system, but i can't put my finger on exactly what it is.

Asunto: Re:
ClayNashvilleTn: The match will be a draw then. And BKR will be calculated accordingly (BKR is only updated at the end of the match and it will be updates considering a draw). So, since a lower ranked player managed to draw against you, you'll probably loose some points while he'll gain some...

Asunto: Ratings movement
Having a fairly high ranking at the moment, I find that most wins are worth either +8 or +1 to me,, with the dividing line somewhere around 400 points differential. Nothing in between. If the differential is even higher, I may get 0.
Losses are a minimum of -8, and may go as high as -25 or more. So - against the majority of opponents, I have to win 8 out of 9 just to breakeven!

23. Marzo 2005, 20:23:20
grenv
it seems like this doesn't apply to players with very established rankings. I frequently split games with players rated 100s lower with no effect.

23. Marzo 2005, 19:24:03
coan.net
Chances are, yes. You (higher ranked player) will lose more points on the lost game (to a lower ranked player) then you will gain winning a game (against a lower ranked player)

If I play an opponent and his score is 1600 and mine is 2000 and he wins one and I win one of a two game match will my score be affected?

http://brainking.com/game/ShowGame?g=695478
I just sent all three of vaiza's blots to the bar in one turn in Hyper Backgammon and I did it coming off the bar myself. Has anyone else ever had this happen? I also happen to have a point guarded in my home base, so it is possible that those blots could stay there for a turn or two.

ah! so after black moves it continues to the next round and then decides if its over .. after white moves the turn goes to black .. and the server decides if it was the last move :)

17. Marzo 2005, 15:46:38
BuilderQ
Well, I've noticed that the "number of moves" shown for each game listed on a player's profile is one ply longer than the actual game. For example, here we see that the two reversi games between Hrqls and Nomad were 20 and 18 moves, while they really were 19 and 18. Whenever black is the last to move, a profile shows the game at an incorrect length. I think it's been this way since BrainKing 2.0.

the one that pgt posted has 35 moves but shows as 36 as well ? what is this extra move ? (the first roll of the dice ?)

Are we counting the number of moves until the game is 100% decided, or are we counting the extra moves after that as well? Not that I have any candidates either way.

I remember searching through many profiles some months age trying to find the longest game of Gothic Chess. It would be nice for information like that (maybe average game length as well? :-)) to be stated in the Statistics section or under each game's rules section.

Of course my finding is not absolute, I was hoping others would post games that are both longer and shorter.
In theory a game could be 3 moves. That would be frustrating for the loser, but it should happen here soon given the number of games being played.

16. Marzo 2005, 16:21:27
grenv
I just looked at a couple of players who have played hundreds of games and clicked on Hypergammon in their profile. The game list includes the number of moves.

I know it's tempting to think that a technical solution is the only way, but sometimes good old brainpower and elbow grease does the trick.

Has anyone told Fencer about this ?

In looking at some of the top ranked players , I noticed claifornia girl had only played 4 games.
Having such a high rating isn't so abnormal, yet it makes one stop and think something fishy is going on when they receive a resignation such as this.

if they time out within 2 moves, it's not counted for BKR, but otherwise a win or a timeout have the same effect on the ratings.
