I'm tempted to delete it and either start over or go to Opera, which hasn't lost my bookmarks, but which tends to pay overmuch attention to details here on BK...

Hi there,
My firefox icon on my desktop changed its title from "firefox" to "vddf" .... what/why is this and should I worry?

The main reason I don't like Firefox is that my bookmarks always disappear... and I do mean always. What causes this and how do I prevent it?

Am I supposed to "personalize" Firefox in any way, not by adding extensions but somewhere on my computer where it differentiates between me and the other 2 users on this computer?

Finally, I'll bake a lovely cake for whomever will come and fix my problems.....

Asunto: Re: Alt tags in Firefox
Rose: That's because IE is not a browser, but a strategical weapon. Its intent is not to give you a good internet experience. If that were the case, MS would have developed it constantly, but they didn't do anything about it when there was no threatening second browser. Its sole purpose is to be the quasi standard and to let people get used to it. It doesn't conform to any standards - if you try to develop valid in means of w3c-standards, IE will kick your a**.

It accepts a mess and renders it. That might sound good - but is actually bad. It's the main reason why more than 90% of the internet is not standards compliant! And it simply ignores a huge stack of standards, especially CSS (just consider their broken Border-Box-Model). That's why it is hard nowadays to develop both correct and successful in the meaning of reaching out to many people. If you want many people to see what you are doing, you have to consider IE. If you consider IE, your design gets broken.

Just consider you wouldn't have tested your site on FF: You would have thought, that using the "alt" tag was actually correct, and would have expected your users to see those titles. You wanted to do everything correct and cared about the user. The user also did nothing wrong. And despite it might look like FF was lowering the user's experience by simply not displaying the (intended) titles, it was acutally IE which made you think you could use alt when you had to use title.

IE is a pain in the a**. Please, everybody: Use Firefox! If you don't like Firefox, use Opera. But NEVER use the Internet Exploder. It really plainly sucks.

Anyone who created websites knows or I assume should know what an alt tag is. I have been having trouble recently with alt tags not showing up in FF but work as they are intended in IE. Anyone else heard of this happening?

I'm on webtv again. I'm wondering if it is because my comp would automatically upgrade to Vista when I 1st got it & changed everything or would I have to reboot the comp & ten re-install MSN again?

Is there any way to get the Tab button on your keyboard to work as a tab in a typing box here, rather than it jumping to the next field ?

1) Reboot computer if you have not already - if something went bad to cause it to not display, a fresh computer bootup will solve most all problems.

2) What I see some people do is make the taskbar smaller. Put your mouse at the bottom of the screen - VERY bottom, does it change from a pointer to a up/down 2 arrow? If so, then the taskbar may have been minimized - click while you see the double arrow and drag up a little bit to "expand" the task bar back to the regular size.

Is explorer running then? If it is, you can see "explorer.exer" in the list on the "processes" tab of the task manager. Also, if explorer is running, hitting WinButton+R should show the "Run" dialog.

Asunto: Re:
King Reza: I know of two scenarios in which the taskbar disappears:

a) Explorer crashes
b) It is hidden

If explorer crashes, it usually just restarts. and if the taskbar is hidden, it usually reappears when you move your mouse to the bottom of the desktop. You can hide/unhide the Taskbar through Start -> Setting -> Taskbar&Startmenu.

If your taskbar is not hidden, and explorer doesn't recover, go into the task manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del -> Task Manager) and start explorer (click "new task" and type "explorer", then hit enter)

Summertop: I would most definitely call it a downgrade rather than an upgrade. All you get at the moment are some additional restrictions and obscure "security advantages" which are so annoying that everybody will ignore them/ turn them off after a short while. This article ("20 Things you won't like about Windows Vista" may be a good start, although I wouldn't agree on some of his statements, especially on his "OS-Ranking". It definitely shows some disadvantages from the user's viewpoint.

Anyway: I have not heard of any reason to switch to Vista except its improved look&feel (which is IMHO inferior to the look&feel of other modern OSes like MacOS or up-to-date Linux distributions) so far.

ßăķëď Äłáşķǻñ: I have limited exposure to Vista. But what I have seen is not good. I would expect many programs to quit working once you upgrade (crossgrade? downgrade?) to Vista. I am a Software developer and several of my company's products don't work on Vista. Some of the products we interface with also don't work.

It also seems to be cumbersome to use. Our software, like most, is not "Signed" and does not have a "Trust Certificate" with it. So, Vista ALWAYS asks "Are you sure" every time we try to run something. VERY annoying after a while.

Finally, as with any Microsoft OS, I would wait until some "Service Packs" have been released to fix the expected bugs.

At a recent computer
expo (COMDEX), Bill Gates reportedly compared the computer industry
with the auto industry and stated "If GM had kept up with technology
like the computer industry has, we would all be driving twenty-five
dollar cars that got 1000 mi/gal."

Recently General Motors addressed this comment by releasing the
statement: "Yes, but would you want your car to crash twice a day?"

Not only that, but....

Every time they repainted the lines on the road you would have to buy a new car.

Occasionally your car would die on the freeway for no reason, and you would just accept this, restart and drive on.

Occasionally, executing a maneuver would cause your car to stop and
fail and you would have to re-install the engine. For some strange
reason, you would accept this too.

You could only have one person in the car at a time, unless you bought
"Car95" or "CarNT". But, then you would have to buy more seats.

Macintosh would make a car that was powered by the sun, was reliable,
five times as fast, twice as easy to drive, but would only run on five
percent of the roads.

The Macintosh car owners would get expensive Microsoft upgrades to their cars, which would make their cars run much slower.

The oil, gas and alternator warning lights would be replaced by a single "general car default" warning light.

New seats would force everyone to have the same size butt.

The airbag system would say "are you sure?" before going off.

If you were involved in a crash, you would have no idea what happened.

U could use those (hotmail, yahoo or even google mail) which give u a gig a space. But I wouldnt reccomend it without having the stuff backed up on disc anyways.   They can disapear off the site and nothing u could do about it.  Same as the "free" online sites that host your pics..   Can disapear anytime and u would lose everything.   If its a "new" PC that your getting, it will have a CD/DVD burner for you.  Use that for best protection.

If you have a burner ( CD writer or DVD writer) that is your best most efficient way to save your files to transfer them. If you cant or dont have a burner the other options are the old fashioned Floppy drive back up which would take you dozens of floppies to save your files to. OR there are free storage sites online that you can upload your files to then download them on to your new system once it is online.

Hope that helsp
