someone recommended to me not long ago, can't remember the author or title, but it is definately newer, I believe it's about abuse of some sort or another, the author is definately a woman, and it has an odd sort of title....Ring a bell with anyone? I'm stumped...
Also, just so you know, Stephen King and comedic author Dave Barry are very good friends, Dave talks about King all throughout his non-fiction books and they are in a band together (I'm racking my brain trying to remember the name of the group, it'll come to me and I'll get back)
ajtgirl: Yes, yes, yes...blew me away...I've always told my elder son he should read "The Stand" someday when he found the time (he doesn't have much) & when he bought it home from the library last month, to my surprize it was different! The first edition published in 1978 was edited by Stephen King due to the publishers insistence that it was too long, so it was cut some 500 pages (he had the choice to do it himself or let the publisher do it, so he did, thank goodness)...The "complete and uncut edition" was done in 1991 & even tho I'm only a quarter of the way into it, it's different, really different, much more indepth, the way King intended it to be from the get-go, I guess.....I'm in my glory right now, if I could not go to work I'd read it from start to finish.....I also LOVE Stephen King, a very, very talented writer
I have read everything Stephen King has ever written Not that I can quote from them or remember every single story But I love his writings First time I read The Stand I had just moved to NYC and the scene in the tunnel under the river was frightfully real to me. I could really visualize it having been in those places. Every book he writes is special to me...He is one person I would love to sit down and have a talk with Are you telling me that the first edition of The Stand was edited and I did not read the real thing?
Hi - believe it or not, my first time stopping by, even tho I'm an avid reader. For those of you who read the original Stephen King novel "The Stand" way back when...Have any of you read the "uncut" version done in the 1990's? I'm in the midst of it now and loving the story all over again

amandalove: They are called car boot sales here and are held in designated places userally a field or a car park. Garage sales at home are not allowed here. It depends where it is from on e-bay. I bought a book publised in the USA cheaper in spite of pp and delivered within a week. Here they wanted 4 to 6 weeks delivery time and their cut for ordering. I enjoy the library sales, there is one tomorrow uptown and I,ll be there lol! I think Amazon is expensive. There is a site called Play.com which sells nearly everything including books and pp is free here I donno if it would be free in the USA.
Mousetrap: ohhhhhhhhh now i understand. do you have "garage sales" in your country? that is were people sell their belongings from there home. anyway that is usually a good place to find books, and our librarys here will have 'book' sales. on ebay and amazon you still have to pay for shipping.
I have finished 4 books in a series by Alexander McCall Smith...about a lady detective agency in Africa. Have also finished Cane River by Lalita Tademy if anyone is interested.

ajtgirl: My paws won,t reach that far to put it on the shelf but if you mean for the circle you would be lucky if you ever got it from here unless I paid the highest postage which is the resgistered one it would be far cheaper to just buy it or go to the library there lol!
baddessi: LOL! Well they both look good! I never heard of that intergration happening in the USA before and the Songs book reminds me of Catherine Cookson.
baddessi: Thanks! Nice of you to offer but I think One Thousand White Women might be a bit too expensive to keep and I can,t even sing at all never mind Songs in Ordinary time.
baddessi: Another good one written in an humourous way is The Sex Lives of The Popes by Nigel Cawthorne, he wrote a series of them not sure I can repeat them on here though lol! Actually he is very good. I know I know I read some strange books!
Asunto: Re: "I Am a Cat" (吾輩は猫である) By Natsume Souseki (夏目漱石)
瀬人様: Being a mouse I don,t really like to talk about this err subject but if I must, my favourite cat story is The Cat that Walked by Himself, the further away the better imo but its from the Jungle book.
I am so delighted that you have fond memories of Charles Dickens' writings. Being deaf, they must have been quite an education in elocution He was one wordy fellow and with a sharp wit, indeed.
Asunto: "I Am a Cat" (吾輩は猫である) By Natsume Souseki (夏目漱石)
I read the first two books. Very interesting indeed. I would like to read a conversation between Garfield and the Cat from the Book... Or find Kon Ichikawa's film adaptation!!!

ajtgirl: A Cristmas Carrol was always my favourite by the way. For poetry my favourites are Poe and Longfellow and the Latin version of Virgil,s Aneid, we had to learn that by heart at secondary school. I have always believed that all the best literature was written in Latin. Latin is not taught in secondary schools any more, my class was one of the last to do it, I was lucky! But I canna sew to save me life I,m afraid!
ajtgirl: They did,nt do it at my school either lol! My mam bought me all his books, it was to help me speak as I am deaf and it worked because I have never shut up since lol!
Dolittle: Of course not, and I didn't mean to offend I lived in the panhandle, strictly agricultural and livestock The parents in our school district, who elected the school board and chose the curiculum were making future farmers and homemakers in 1974 I learned a lot there but not about reading or the arts But I can sew an entire wardrobe for a man or a woman!
Wonderful! I went to high school in Texas and they didn't give a darn for Charles Dickens I have just finished Great Expectations and am ready for Hard Times next.
His imagery and vocabulary are so beautiful and I love his style of always promoting the underdog.

ajtgirl: Charles Dickens is one of my favourite authors, I read all his books when I was very young, that is how I learned to speak by reading his books out loud every night. Edited for spelling.
