Otsikko: ULTIMA is a very good 40 year old chess variant
Ultima is a very good chess variant that was invented by Abbott in the early 1960s. It is has been one of my favourite variants of the past two decades. I would love to see the game at this site, possibly with a tweak or two in the rules. I have some very good suggestions as to minor rule changes, having played hundreds of games of this variety. Is anyone else interested in seeing ULTIMA at brainking.com?

Muokannut Walter Montego (16. Lokakuu 2006, 02:12:34)
I like to play faster paced games, but 1 hour games on a turn based site is not what I like. Until Fencer actually adds live play, I'm not going to play such quick games. A move or two a day with time off when needed works fine for me. The original days per with vacations allowed can be abused readily. Yeah I know, it's within the rules so it ain't abuse. What's within the rules isn't always what's meant when one plays a game though.

After the Fischer clock timing of games was added to the site, I decided to experiment with them. It's taken me awhile to get a feel for how it goes. It's just a matter of figuring out how many moves per day or week you like, starting with some amount of time, and then setting a maximum for when you might be away or a little longer. I think it works very well. It is something that takes getting used to and seeing how it works for yourself. I'm talking about periods of a day to a week with maximums from one week to three weeks. The amount of time the bonus is set for becomes the average time per move after subtracting the starting time of the clock.

"Have Fun": Actually, no, there is no way to enforce a "1 hour and 9 minute" game either, with the current time constraints available. 2 hour total time is the lowest possible to enforce.

I never said I didn't like them, and no I generally don't play them.

And the only times I have ever had anything to say about your feature requests are when you go off topic. Let's not twist things around. Try and have a good evening! :-D

Otsikko: Re: One hour games
Mousetrap: Nope, it's like the clocks they use in professional chess matches. You get a fixed amount of time to play all your moves. So if you take 5 minutes making your first move you've only got 55 minutes left to complete all the others.

It's nice but no good if you've got other things that take up your time like kids

Otsikko: Re: One hour games
Well it really is simple. There is currently no way to set up a 1 hour game! Just because the creator calls it a 1 hour game, does not make it so. They are mistaken when they call it that. The lowest time constraint currently possible at brainking is Fisher clock: 1/0/x. This means each player has 1 hour to make their moves. The only way to make a 1 hour game would be if there was the possiblity to use .5/0/x. That would be a half hour for each person. (Even then there is the possibility of it going over the 1 hour by 9 minutes. That is because Brainking checks for time outs every 10 minutes. That's just the way it is! Try requesting that Fencer add the possibility of the .5 on the Fisher clock.

gambler104: Yes, in thery if player 1 plays the second after the time out script plays, and the other player plays the second before it runs again - it could keep running forever - adding up to 9 minutes to the timed out time - but in reality, getting more then 10 minutes would be very hard - 20 minutes would be super hard, and super risky.

WellyWales: The people who make one hour games should label them as 2 hour games, or 1 hour time limit for each player (1+1 for each player = 2 hours for a game) - again, within 10 minutes or so usually.

BIG BAD WOLF: You will only be timed out if it is your turn during the time out check. So theoretically, the game could last for well beyond two hours.

Hrqls: The timeout script is ran every 10 minutes (not every hour). So a user *could* possible be down 9 minutes before the script runs.

crosseyed: the time out is checked once an hour (as you can read in an article fencer on http://www.brainking.info posted this week)

therefore, when the time for a new move is started 5 minutes after the timeout is checked, then there is 1 hour before the timeout .. but at that time there will 55 more minutes before the timeout check will be done .. giving this move 1 hour and 55 minutes for the real timeout loss
