Otsikko: something to attract more people to paid memberships
I have an idea to attract more people to buy a paid membership:
Maybe it is nice to give everyone who has made a certain prestation (for example getting a certain rating at one or more games, or getting a certain amount of prestation points) a Brain Bishop membership for free?
When this will be done, the players will see the advantages of a paid membership, and it will result to more people who buy a paid membership.

As the new BrainKing is being re-designed, as in similar to Facebook sign up for pages etc..... would it be possible to include RSS Feeds somehow.

At present i get various computer & web Feeds going to Thunderbird, then once every week or so i go through them cutting & pasting links into notepad, and then pasting them in to Cyber Cafe Fellowship so people can keep up with whats going on in the Cyber world.

I was thinking, something like being able to set 'X' ammount of feeds, that would automatically post once a day on a board or Blog as it would become. Still allowing people to comment on what has arrived

Would save so much time for me personally, and be alot better for every one who reads the blog as i never know really what to include

Well, seems a great idea and very useful idea for all sorts of boards...Sports, world news, jokes, recipes etc..etc.. could all use it

Otsikko: Solitaires - new group proposal

I like to play alone ... I bet everyone knows some kind of patience or solitaire ... this category is missing on this site ... it will draw many new users and keep many of us playing when there is no available move in our regular games ... there are many solitaire games you can play on the internet today, why not to create a new category of solo games ... many of them can be played competetively ... golf, darts, bowling are just solitaire games in their nature, there is no contact with the opponent and yet you can compete in tournaments ... as a start I propose my own invention already played at Zillions of Games, named Hippodrome ... it uses chess pieces and and you goal is to remodel the initial, random setup moving 4 knighst from the bottom of the 4x4 board to the top of it in smallest number of moves ... fun, relaxing, and still challenging ... below is the link so you can see the board and the pieces ... we can easily pair up players to compete in tournament ... from this link follow to Chess Variants pages to read more.

Permit I give my point of view.
First, please, keep in mind Chess and his variants are supposed to reflect a battle.

So in place to changing chess in a kind of gambling casino game, I suggest some light, soft modifications:

-Add to the Bishop and the Knight a vertical and horizontal move of one square.
Nomore those numerous stupid draw because "bishops on different colors squares";
Nomore draws because a Bishop or a Knight can't mate in case of K+B/N vs K.

- Stalemating the King opponent is considered as a win. What a non sense to call that a draw? The opponent King will be fired if he moves and you agree for a draw? Come on man!

- Who on the hearth, considering chess is the movie of a battle, could admit the Pawn movement is not ridiculous,? I suggest:
a) the Pawn move as it is now but can take vertically and diagonally. Where come from an infantry unit can't attack what is facing up?
b) Pawn can move backward. Why refuse a unit to drawback?

All that eliminate close to 99% of draw games and offer a new breath to our calculation with the satisfaction the picture of a battle is nearest.

Note: don't forget all those little, logical, ful of common sense modifications should be applied to Janus and Grand Chess for the pleasure of all of us.

Otsikko: "Revolt Chess" - new game proposal

not enough yet ? some more variants ? here we go ... called "Revolt Chess" with unequal armies ... read on:

1. White has usual array like in standard chess ...

2. Black has no Rooks, no Bishops, no Knights (they were beheaded) , only Mr. Robespierre and his Wife Chessina ... Mr. Robespierre moves like a king and Chessina like a queen ... free fields in the 8th row are populated by common soldiers (pawns) and 7th row is like in traditional chess.

3. As you can imagine, revolutionary war is going to start soon ... royal forces (white) against revolutionary crowd, lead by Mr. Robespierre and Chessina ...

4. Pawns from the 8th and 7th row can move two squares initially ... en passant is available for both rows.

5. Goal is like in chess ... check mate the opponents king or Mr. Robespierre ...

6. Black commoners can promote to another commoners or lady Chessina and they can be put anywhere on the board ...

7. Mr. Robespierre can castle on both sides ...

Cheers,

Andy.

Otsikko: "Time-out Chess" - new game proposal

let's use our imagination one more time, and convert the number of fields white pieces move thru into the minutes ... the idea came to me while meditating on Horde and Maharaja Chess ... in both these games there should be utilized some kind of "timer"  to make these games more balanced ... "time" is usually undestood as the number of moves and for Maharaja they proposed 25 moves since the computer can always win with less than 25 moves ... in my "Time-out Chess" instead of conting the moves we count the number of fields white pieces move during the game and we call them minutes ... read on for details:

1. All the rules of traditional chess apply, with some modification.

2.  Black queen is out f the game (her square is empty)

3. White have 100 minutes (understood as 100 fields their pieces move across the board) to check-mate black ... if by the 100th minute white fail to check-mate black, game is lost for white and black wins the game.

4. Of course white and black can win by check-mating  at any time before the game ends by time-out.

5. White has time limitation, black material limitation ... this is a type of variants with unequal armies, but still, black's lack of queen is equalized by white's time restrictions ...

6. Examples: after the first white move, clock starts ticking for them (only for white) ... white starts with 100 minutes and, let's say. after the first move e2-e4 clock resets to 98 ... after the next white's move, for example Bf1-b5, clock resets to 94 minutes ...

7. Short and long castle cost 4 and 5 minutes respectively ...

****

this type of game is a good way to learn how to manage our resources ... for black it may be a good school to learn playing defensively, for white to "watch your steps" economy ...  game is perfectly playable head-to-head ...

keep playing and inventing variants

Otsikko: "Birthday Chess" - new game proposal

this is funny one ... how to make everybody happy ? how to make sure everybody gets present on the day of birth ... ? well, we were all born either on the day ONE , TWO, THREE ........ up to THIRTY FIRST day of the month ... it doesn't matter which one, we want to use BirthDay not BirthMonth ... it's so simple, read on.

1. All ther rule of traditional chess apply with a small twist.

2. Before the game starts, each player enters the day of his/her birth ... mine is 8 of March so I woud enter 8 ...

3. When my Birtday comes (same as the move number if you didn't get it so far, just kidding) I will be entitled to SECOND move of any chosen piece of mine.

4. But wait ! My opponent is a nice fellow and wants to celebrate my Birthday and GIVES away one of his/her pawn of his/her choice during the next move (normal move follows, of course) ...

5. Nobody is going to investigate what is your real Birthday, so choose at your own risk ... some may prefer having advantage early in the game, some later ...

***

And now I will stop with new variants ... just wanted to make you happy walking thru this garden of imagination as chess variants realm is ...

Again, happy Holidays, and hope Fencer will like one of these variants and will give us a nice present (like it used to be, lol)

Otsikko: "Mapped Chess" - new game proposal

hi, this a beginnig of the season, right ? so let me give you more fun and toys to explore ... this time we are going to use a random factor in our chess variant ... read on:

1. All the rules for traditional game apply, with (surprise !!!) a twist.

2. After the 5th move each player will be getting a number, displayed beneath his/her part of the board ranging from 1 to 8 ... these numbers will indicate the column number.

3. Players will be forced to make one of the action using this column:

- player has to move INTO this column, move OUT of this column, move WITHIN this column or ... (attention, please!!!) skip the move entirely in case no action is possible or he/she chooses so ...

4. You can play this game using cards from Ace to 8 and draw before your move ...

***

Have fun,

Andy.

Otsikko: "Swapco Chess" - new game proposal

for those who are not satisfied with "Drop Chess" ... Swapco is a short name for swap column ... easy electronic version, though it can also be played face to face ...it requires some dose of visual skills (well, we play chess so what's the problem, right ?) and can be very, very tricky ... rules below:

1. All the traditional rules apply with a twist ...

2. At any time after the 5th move each player has a right to swap any column with any other one ... within the same class ... odd numbered columns can be swapped only with odd numbered columns and the same rule applies to even numbered columns ...

3. Players CANNOT swap back the same columns to their original position in their next move ... it's possible later on ...

4. Swapping columns is considered as a complete move (player either makes regular move or swaps) ...

5. Swap can only be performed ONCE by each player ...

I enjoy inventing new variants, so please forgive me, lol.

Muokannut Herlock Sholmes (19. Joulukuu 2009, 15:26:09)

I have something new for you for this Holiday Season ... crazy as usual, easy and mind twisting variant ...can be played face to face as well ...

1. All traditional rules apply with two novel ideas.

2. Player's pieces are not at the bottom of the screen, and they are instead AT THE TOP ... so, we have to play downward ... nothing really changes besides our position by the table ... (that's enough to get dizzy)

3. Gravitational forces are in effect and  the pawns can be dropped downward as many fields as you wish and can ... you can drop them in stages, let's say,  first drop is from row 7 to row 4 and later you may drop it to row 1... watch for the open columns since pawns can reach the last row(at the bottom of the screen, of course) very fast and promote (even faster, lol)...

****

Hope you like this idea. I wish you a very Happy Holiday Season and a Happy New Year.

Andy.

Otsikko: Re: Feature for Chess or similar games
talen314: Agree with all of your suggestions.

Slightly related, it would also be nice to get a notification when a tournament you signed up for is cancelled due to lack of players. Bishops and Knights can only play one tournament at a time of each game type, so it's relevant to know when you're free to pick another tournament.

Otsikko: Feature for Chess or similar games
One feature that would be very handy for games like Chess would be a conditional move feature.  A similar idea for games like Ludo where there is often only one move possible an automatic move feature may be desirable.  Some people don't care for such a feature so it could be an optional feature for such games, leaving to the players to decide.

Usually there are many tournaments listed on the tournaments page.  It would be useful if there were some additional features for the page.
1.  Be able to search for tournaments that need only one more person to start.
2.  Allow a filter mechanism similar to waiting games to be used so that only the games a player is interested in are displayed in the tournament games list.
3.  An additional filter could be made based on desired time limits.  People that don't like really fast or slow time limits could prevent them from being listed.
4.  An alert feature might also be useful that would tell a player when a tournament that meets desired criteria is created or when a tournament only needs one more player

I did recently post some ideas for some Battleboat variants on the Battleboat board, and would love more comments good/bad about any of those.

Battleboats Board: http://brainking.com/en/Board?bc=40

Another thing I would like to see is a Ludo variant - it's the #1 game, yet does not have any variants. One thing people seem to like on this site are (A) Luck and (B) Faster versions of a game, so I bring to you:

Ludo Express

Same Board, pieces as regular ludo

Get out of start with either a 1 or a 6

Roll 2 dice each turn. Each turn, 2 dice rolled. (6’s don’t do anything special – doubles don’t do anything special – Just 2 dice rolled each turn by each player)

Each dice is separate. Like Backgammon, you first make a move with Dice #1 – then make a move with Dice #2 (or swap and move first with Dice #2, then Dice #1 – order is up to player) You can move the same piece twice, OR move 2 different pieces – 1 with each die

So for example, first turn of the game, you roll a 1 & 6 – you have 2 options. Use the “1” to get out of start, and then use the “6” to move 6 spaces – or use the “6” to get our of start, and then use the “1” to move 1 space.

You can split the dice up between different men. You can use the “1” to get a piece out, and use “6” on a different piece on the board.

NOTE: If you own man is sitting on your “start space”, you have to move it BEFORE you can get another piece out of the board.

If you can move – you have to move. (only pass if you have no move) Plus it is possible to move with 1 die, and then pass the other if there is no move with that one. I would say make it like the gammon games. BOTH dice must be used if possible. If only one of the dice can be used, the highest is used.

The rest are the same rules as regular Ludo

Otsikko: Re: Mine Chess
talen314: Judging by the list of most popular games at Brainking this may be a Chess variant that would be popular.

But "Mine Chess" as you describe it doesn't have randomness - at least not in the sense of 9 out of 10 games you list. It's just a game without perfect information - more like Logik, Battleboats, Frog Finder/Legs and Espionage, games that currently rank 12, 16, 18, 22, 23, 49, 51, 67, 73, 77, 83. The first Espionage variant comes in at in 51, and I would rank 'Mine Chess' closest to that (of all non-chess variations).

Whether Mine Chess is an interesting variation or not, I don't know, but I don't agree with your popularity argument. New games are, IMO, always fun, but I prefer almost anything above yet-another-chess-variation.

Otsikko: Mine Chess
Muokannut talen314 (12. Joulukuu 2009, 14:40:31)
A look at the most popular games at Brainking shows that games with a random element are quite popular.
1.  Ludo  2.  Backgammon  4.  Hyper Backgammon  5.  Triple Dice Poker  6.  Backgammon Race  7.  Fevga 8.  Dice Chess 10x10  9. Dice Poker  and 10. Nackgammon
All but one of the top ten games have a random element.
Looking through  D. B. Pritchard's book I came across a variant called "Mine Chess," which is identical to
regular Chess except that each player picks two squares on own side of board that are mined.  If the mined squares were randomly chosen instead a randomized element would be introduced into the game. It is true that Backgammon games make up half of the top ten games but it is also evident a significant proportion of the players at Brainking also indulge in Chess, the number three game. When an enemy piece moves to a mined square the player controlling the mine may choose to make the mine explode.  Players can wait for a more valuable piece to go to the square
Judging by the list of most popular games at Brainking this may be a Chess variant that would be popular.  Mined squares clearly would have an impact on endgame play which was one of the motivating factors for its creation.

Otsikko: Re: Ghostrider Chess
talen314: What happens if a king moves into check of a ghost rider? It's not said explicitly, but are we to assume ghost riders move like knights? If an opponent is told a ghost rider moves, is the opponent told which ghost rider moves, or just that one of the ghost riders moved? Do ghost riders prevent check? That is, say my opponents king is on a1, I move my rook to c1, and my opponent has a ghost rider on b1, is he in check?

The option of the non-moving player to "block" a move makes it an oddity with respect to all the other 2-player games in BK: it requires both players to make actions before a 'move' is done.

Otsikko: Ghostrider Chess

I recently purchased D. B. Pritchard's volume on Chess variants.  Dark Chess is quite popular on Brainking so there is the possibility that this variant created by Ralph Betza in 1978 might also be popular.

Knights are replaced by invisible ghost riders.  Opponents are told when a ghost rider moves but the destination is not given unless a capture is made.  Pieces may pass over squares occupied by a ghost rider, even when castling.  (I assume this means queen-side castling since otherwise two pieces would be on the same square.)  Ghost Riders are subject to capture like all other pieces.  A player may, not mandatory since Ghost Riders ordinarily don't stop movement, reveal a ghost rider's position in order to block an enemy movement.  If a ghost rider checks the enemy king the check is announced but the location of the ghost is not given, unless the move also captured a piece.  A king in check from a ghost rider has the option to attempt capture of the ghost rider but loses if the wrong square is chosen.

The book is unclear about what happens when a piece is blocked by a ghost rider.  There are several possible options.

1.  Choose a different move

2.  Forced capture of the ghost rider by the blocked piece (I personally like this option which introduces some real uncertainty in movement.)

3.  Stopped just before the ghost rider.

Otsikko: The view from the other side
Sometimes it's helpful to be able to look at the board from the opponent's point of view. It would be nice to be able to click on something that said opponent's view, or some such thing, and be able to see the board from the other side.

It used to be on this site or another one (I don't remember) you could go to the other person's profile, go to their current games, click on their game with you, and you would see the game from their perspective. But that's not the case here, or no longer the case.

cowboynoel: I do not understand the request

You can change the pieces you use in Settings ---> Game Settings ---> Xiangqi

onigoroshi: This is to renew this request. It is difficult to learn the Chinese pieces when I am playing with the Western pieces.

Otsikko: Tournament Search Feature
I would like to see two features which would aid tournament searches.
1.  I would like to have a filter that would allow me to generate a list of tournament sections that need just one more player to start.
2.  Along the same lines it would be nice to be able to generate a list of all tournaments that have already reached the minimum number players needed to start on time.
There are so many tournaments available that it can be a lot of work to find ones that will start soon without such a feature.
