mctrivia: If absolute positioning is used within an html "div" to align gifs with transparency then a whole lot of irregularity is possible.

grenv: split the hexagons like this

Would make it reletively easy to implement and low picture combinations.

grenv: I have seen CGI applications that will generate images on the fly. This could be used to make up the board. Another option is break each box down into smaller parts so you are on a rectangular board with only a few pieces being part of each players.

Otsikko: Re: a simple but fun strategy game would be fun
WhiteTower: In the end it's just a system of accepting mouse clicks on certain images. The hard part is not the image map itself, but the fact that every possible board layout would need to be implemented, instead of every combination for a particular square. For this reason I think we need a board that can be drawn by joining parts.

Perhaps turning the board slightly to align the hexigons, and then making the "active" part of each square in the middle? Or something like that.

Otsikko: Re: a simple but fun strategy game would be fun
WhiteTower: yes I understod. just thinking back to the original idea more then 2 player games. And then limiting to must be playable in a rectangualr grid.

Even risk could be played on a rectangular grid if you drew up a similar map with lines connecting points instead of actual country boarders.

WhiteTower: I can understand the rectangular structure it makes things a lot easier. But card games could easily be done in a rectangulare structure.

Otsikko: Re: a simple but fun strategy game would be fun
grenv: In any case, and if you haven't noticed already, no non-rectangular game boards have been implemented - Alquerque and co. are the most complicated cases, which are still shaped within a rectangular structure, albeit with non-coordinated directionality.

Otsikko: Re: Definitely dominoes!
mctrivia: Very simply - instead of just 2 people shooting at each other's ships, more (maybe up to 5?) people shoot at each other's ships! Each turn consists of sub-turns shooting at a specific opponent's board - whoever's ships are all sunk, gets booted until one player remains alive, and wins!

I love this site,it is not a complaint.but I sure would love to see more games in which you can play again more than one opponent in a game.
but I guess step one before our fearless leader even considers this is to see if it would be appreciated if he went to the trouble.I know this site must keep him busy.
so ok..please speak up,who else likes multi opponent games?
if so,any suggestions?

Otsikko: Re: Refresh in chat rooms
mctrivia: Are you in software by any chance? The best thing for this would be a custom front-end. It could be done in DHtml in a day or two (or three or four, lol), I'd reckon. UIt would watch the front page for you and then open the message board in a new window. It could watch all the boards, not just one and would only refresh when you close the board's window.

mctrivia
Otsikko: Audible Notice
Would be cool if the first time a new event shows up you had the option to play a short audio clip to get your attention. This would be good if you are playing and doing something else while waiting for your oponent to make a move or waiting for a reply in a message board.

Otsikko: Re: Refresh in chat rooms
playBunny: Well I don't see a problem with hitting the refresh button each time I finish reading all the messages. It is just a little bit of a pain to have to either keep hiting refresh myself or to go to the main page and wait.

playBunny
Otsikko: Re: Refresh in chat rooms
mctrivia: It seems that I'd have to be pressing that link for each new message. That reduces the utility somewhat. The time to read one message is likely to be less than the refresh interval (unless it's one of the ones that certain [cough] people write ), so perhaps it should only be switched off if there are, say 3 or more new messages at once. Trouble with that is that if it refreshes while you're away you lose the "New". Hmmm.

11. Joulukuu 2005, 04:08:56
mctrivia
Otsikko: Re: Refresh in chat rooms
playBunny: It should work like this:

When you log on to a message board and there is a new message refresh is turned off. If no new messages it will be in whatever state you left it in.(or just on by default). It should stop autorefreshing as soon as there is a new message so you can read in peace and start again when you press the link.

playBunny
Otsikko: Re: Refresh in chat rooms
mctrivia: And presumably it would reset if you press the link again or log out, or perhaps after a given period away from the board?

mctrivia
Otsikko: Re: Refresh in chat rooms
playBunny: yes but when you first join this should be off so you can read all the previus posts. This is good if people are posting a lot to a board.

11. Joulukuu 2005, 03:31:53
playBunny
Otsikko: Re: Refresh in chat rooms
mctrivia: So you'd keep a browser open with the board's page in it and it would refresh every X minutes like the main page?

11. Joulukuu 2005, 03:21:02
mctrivia
Otsikko: IRC
Not sure if this is possible but instead of the refreshing of the message boards create your own irc server and anything posted on the message board would also be posted on the IRC chat room of the same name and anything posted on the IRC chat room would also be posted on the message board. If you did this you could also have an IRC boat in the chat rooms that would send them a private message with the last 20 messages if they asked for it.

Well, if it is a simple matter like making a simple SQL query to run and is
accepatable to Fencer, I will ask him personally.

Would be nice if there was a little check box or link at the top of the page to make a chat room start refreshing when you are done reading everything.

Otsikko: Sudoku
Can you put in a Sudoku Chalenge? Not a 2 player game but they can be chalenging. And it could be a timed chalenge keep track of who solves them in the least amount of time or so. Or just something to do while you wait for your oponents to make a move.
