You would think the message number indicator would help since when you scroll over it, the subject displays. The next trick would be to have a HELP alert rather than a message alert. lol
Fencer: Yes, a green dot at the top of each db together with an envelope for quicker contact is good BUT moderators have this awful habit of coming online and then having the audacity to play their games. There's no way of actually drawing a mod's attention to a situation on their board during this time.
Would it be possible to have some sort of message box alert for mods while they're playing their games?
If you could somehow configure the hi-fi of the mod to play 'Ride of the Valkyries' at full volume, that should do it. (In NOT a Floosie's case - webtv - three rings on her microwave should galvanise her into action)
Failing that, a red dot (or something similar) above or below games should do it.
rhiannon: Yes, I understand this part. What I need to know is whether the "dot" should mean the moderator is online (on any page) or he is viewing the same board page at the moment.
Fencer: I think NOT a floosie means at the top of each discussion board next to each moderator's nic. A message envelope there wouldn't go amiss either.
It would be nice to have a dot or something directly on the public boards when the moderator/co-mods are here also. It certainly would save some time when problems arise.
I'd like to suggest that the BK Staff page had the online indicators near the globs names like most pages on this site do. For those moments when you need a quick response, it would be a lot easier to find out who are the glob that are online at the moment without having to go through each of their profiles to find out when their last move was.
BIG BAD WOLF: I found said check box and unchecked it. No more smiley icons. Thank you for your posting.
JamesHird: True, you idea is cheaper, but having a lot of games going is not my problem as I have considerably less than most paying members now. I might even consider it next March when my paying membership expires. Though I've curtailed my use of the site of late, I still like being a paying member in case things change or if I want to use some of the options that non-paying members don't have, like creating tournaments or having 80 games going at once. In the meantime, I'd just as soon not see all these flashing icons that don't do much for helping me understand someone's post or message, but certainly annoy me while I'm checking out a game or trying to read a post. I ignore them. The numbers aren't much of a nuisance. They don't move, and they also inform me that someone has used a smiley icon.
AbigilII, pauloaguia, Hrqls: If Abigails option was available, I'd not use it because I still want to read the post itself. As for when the post needs the smiley icons to actually make sense, I'll just make do and not understand the post.
Thank you all for your suggestions. And thank you Fencer for taking the time to think about people that may not want to have the smiley icons and having this option available. I wonder if this'll make my pages of the discussion boards load faster? I have it set for 85 posts and I use a dial up modem. Are the smiley icons generated from my computer in a table that knows the icon to put in place, or do they come from the BrainKing site and have to be loaded from it for each one in the page?
Walter Montego: I'd like to be able to disable the Smiley Icons so I'd not have to see them at all.
There's a setting in your user preferences that disables the smileys. Unfortunally, it doesn't disable the *NUMBER* sequences, so notes full of smileys still look like moronic utterances of toddlers. Now, if only there was a setting, "hide notes that have smileys in them"....
BIG BAD WOLF: but my solution is cheaper
also keeps the number of games down so you dont overtax yourself and leave a lot of people hanging till the last hour of every game ;)
While you guys on swinging the pendulum over yonder, I'd like to be able to disable the Smiley Icons so I'd not have to see them at all. Is this an easy thing for me to do that would just be specific to my computer, or would it take programming on this site for it to be done? Even if it is something that can be tailored just for my computer, I think it'd be a good option to be able to disable them while viewing this site.
Maybe like a list of "personal top 20" smiles or something. That would be good, I mean when I use smiles, I usually only use a select few. (for example I would rarly every use an "love" icon, or a smoking icon.
Eriisa, close...I want a small list of smiley (my favorites). With a link that will give me ALL of the smileys. That way when I open the pop-up smiley window, I don't have to wait for all the smileys to open, just my favorites.
I would like to see the pop-up list of smileys be optimized. Could there be a way to have a "Favorites" list that is shown and a link to show ALL the smileys. That way, we don't have to wait for all the smileys to load, everytime we want to use one?
My mind is too small to remember the number for the smileys I like to use.
Very sneaky of Fencer here, well done !!!!!
Creating an annoying alter ego named gekrompen hoofd just so that non paying members like myself get so annoyed we have to pay for membership to put gekrompen hoofd on hide LOL
Seriosly gekrompen hoofd , how many times do they need to spell it out to you. Everything seems to be in excellent hands and getting better as processes are smoothed out. Have you put in an outstanding issue to the mods that still needs to be dealt with.
If so, what is it so that we all know
If not, it is proof you have no problems and everything is running well according to you.
gekrompen hoofd: Very poetic, but addresses not the issue at hand. You have accused the proprietor of this site with corruption and dealing unfairly with customers.
Everything from auditing moderator behavior, to a proposed new Global Moderator Hierarchy where the Moderator IDs are "non-game playing" so you do not know who they are (should eliminate bias.)
The discussions are quite tame and without so much emotion, so if you want to make a positive contribution, or just read what it going on, join up and make your thoughts known, in complete confidence within the circle.
Some Global Mods are members, and they have responded to queries posted by the memeber community.
How corrupt is thee?
Let me count the ways.
Thee is corrupt to the depth and breadth and height
My soul can reach, when meetings are hell out of sight
For the ends do not justify the means of Being and ideal Grace.
Thee is corrupt to the level of everyday's
Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light, by most arrogant greed
Thee is corrupt freely, as men strive for the most hideous Wrong;
Thee is corrupt purely, as they turn from Knowledge.
Thee is corrupt with a passion put to use
In their old griefs, and with their childhood's sadness
Thee is corrupt with a hatred seemed to lose
With their lost saints, --- thee is corrupt with the breath,
Smiles, tears, of all their life! --- and, if God choose, they shall be served justice better after death
