Otsikko: Dark Chess Quarterly Tournament Number 4
Muokannut Walter Montego (24. Joulukuu 2005, 20:15:07)
Time to restart the quarterly tournaments.
Starts January 20th, 2006.

Two games switched colors, open to all. Good luck.

I might add some other variants, but the announcements will depend on board size. Extinction Chess is likely (8 × 8). The tournament board will have them. Maybe in a few weeks.

Otsikko: Obituary
I have sad news to report : David Pritchard, for whose second edition of the Encyclopedia of Chess Variants I collected games here, has died accidentally on December 11. A big part of the book was already written, but I have of course no idea whether someone will finish the huge work that he was doing. I will forward here the information I might get about that.

Among the great games collected here, a few of them may still be published in another way, either in the magazine "Variant Chess", either on my website. Again, if it happens I will inform the players who provided me the games.

Thank you one more time to all contributors.

Screenchesses if one resing after the first moves it should affect to BKR! The game is often ended after the pieces have putten on the board. What do you people think about it?

If there is but rating which players should have in this random game type. would it be so that after the variation is selected some people would drop out? Maybe also challenging for random games for one on one will be soon possible?

Pythagoras: It actually set me thinking about bidding systems which you might use to bias the choice of game you might receive to hedge against games you don't like and for games you do ... but it all got too complicated.

I signed up for the competition too, fully knowing that I might get a White Maharajah (oh well, now I will you watch!) or to play grenv at dark chess (I'll get that too!). The reason why i think it would be fun as a team tournament is that it would help build team spirit in fellowships ... commisserating or extolling as was fit.

I guess Fencer is doing the same in Backgammon, Checkers, pente and the inline things, none of which I play.

WhisperzQ: White Maharajah, black Maharajah it doesn't matter. Both are boring. White you lose without being able to do nothing, with black you win easier than drinking a glass of water. Booooring....

And what about Grenv and Dark Chess? Why do you fear him so much? At Dark Chess there is one secret: Just observe the board with the edge of your eye! Why? It is known that in the dark, dim objects can be seen better when looking by using the peripheral part of the eye retina, so looking that way you may see a Bishop or a Knight walking at the board.....

Now i'm in the mood for Backgammon only! But i started building my will for playing again Embasy Chess,Anti-Chess,Chess,Dark Chess so hopefully Monday i will start playing again all these games.....For the other types i'm currently playing(Pahtum,Chess,Chinese Chess,Extinction,Atomic, etc), i will be forced to play them since my vacation days will end.....

What books do you have in mind....? LOL!
The worse thing when you play Maharajah as white is that you feel like a wanderer in a desert! You are alone and can't do nothing, just wait to die! You just shuffle your piece without any reason and purpose.....

Well, i got 3 games I've never even looked at, Legan, Horde (which seems silly - especially since i'm playing black) and Grand. I didn't get a single game of dark or atomic :(

oh well, more of a challenge I guess.

4. Helmikuu 2006, 17:25:25

Well Legan seems a stupid drawish game while Horde of course is an easy white-wins game.....Grand though is a very interesting and good game.....!
Fencer you should extend the repertoire of available games here and modify the current stupid one's such as Maharajah,Horde(well actually this doesn't need a big modification if any, since black has a small chance to win or draw if white playes a bit carelessly).....

Otsikko: Re:
Pythagoras: Legan is a little silly, but I'm not sure why it's any more drawish than chess. In fact the %age of draws on this site is about the same as the regular game. I don't even want to understand why white wins horde more often, but it seems I've drawn the short straw playing black against Fencer. Hmm.

grenv:Legan is a little silly, but I'm not sure why it's any more drawish than chess.

Many reasons but i'm too lazy for an in-depth analysis.....Just play it some times with a good opponent and you will see that you can only draw....

In fact the %age of draws on this site is about the same as the regular game.

You should not take this as an evidence of anything. Countless timeouts and too many weakies are the 2 reasons i can think.....

Since you've only played 2 games I'll guess that this is posturing rather than a statement with substance.

You timed out against me by the way, but somehow through the silly house rules managed to stay alive without appearing to have lost a vacation day. How is that possible?

Pythagoras: I won't insist, I'm not that interested actually.

I looked when you had 5 minutes to go and you had 14 vacation days. You still have 14 days vacation even after the time ran out.

4. Helmikuu 2006, 23:43:13
Chicago Bulls
I think you miss the fact that the decrease of the vacation days happens at the start of the new day.

That means at the start of the new day i had 15 days and then after 23:59 i had 14. But in that time i guess our game hasn't time out yet. That means every game it times out now and on the whole day from now on, my vacation days will remain 14 since the decrease already happened.....

That is a possible explanation that i didn't find from anywhere just from my logic to explain that. So don't take for granted all these.....

Otsikko: Re: Extinction chess
Pafl: Good question ! Of course a chess-like endgame is impossible in Extinction, but we could choose to call endgames all positions where both camps have only unique pieces except of pawns (that is, KQRBN v KQRBN). I didn't reach any here yet, but it doesn't seem an unlikely issue at all.
Now, many of the positions just after the last piece trade will probably be either simple forced wins, either dead draws with all pieces having to stay on their posts in order to avoid a breakthrough. Has anyone played an interesting "endgame" here ?

The most "endgamish" endgame I have ever seen is probably in this game of my friend Diogenes against Votacommunista. Only I do not quite understand the ending of the game which Diogenes should have won quite obviously.
