Rose:  My favorite rat was named after my wife.    She approved.  She never crapped on me.  And she'd sit on my shoulder all the time and just sit there as I taught.  The kids were so good to her.  During playtime, they got to hold her and she never messed on anyone.  I was very sad when she died.  I had many rats after her but she was totally the best.  I have a picture of the two of us but I look like such a geek I doubt I'll ever show it.

Dolittle: That's what I understand happened in Ellen's case too. She was told and I believe signed an agreement that she wouldn't give the dog away. It makes sense that the shelter wants to screen potential homes for the pets they place. They are being responsible when they do that. And that they followed up and took the dog back when Ellen violated the agreement speaks highly of their commitment to animals.

Eriisa: I saw that too. Last night another woman came forward and told the news that Ellen had given away a puppy she gave her. So this isn't the first time. It's all so strange.

Jim Dandy: It's a sad situation all around. But a person with access to the media can paint something anyway they want and the other person (in this case the owner of the shelter) finds herself on defensive. A sad commentary when you consider the fact that both parties are strong advocates for animals rights etc. The dog is likely in a very good home and that's the important thing. And the new "caretakers" of the dog followed all the guidelines of the shelter. That's the way it ought to be. A good outcome for the dog, in my view.

Sujet: Re: What is everyones opinion of the Ellen DeGeneres puppygate?
Jim Dandy: I think Ellen went too far. At first I was sympathetic. But she broke the rules. And the shelter owners have the right and responsibility to make sure the animals they adopt out are well cared for. The new owners of the dog refused to comply with the shelter's request and fill out the proper paperwork. Ellen used her celebrity status against the woman at the shelter and also had her lawyers on it. And of course with the media it has now gotten way out of hand. Cute pup though!

So there's this man with a parrot. And his parrot swears like a sailor, I mean he's a pistol. He can swear for five minutes straight without repeating himself.
The trouble is that the guy who owns the parrot is a quiet, conservative type, and this bird's foul mouth is driving him crazy.
One day, it gets to be too much, so the guy grabs the bird by the throat, shakes him really hard, and yells, "QUIT IT!" But this just makes the bird mad and he swears more than ever.
Then the guy gets mad and says, "That's it. I'll get you." and locks the bird in a kitchen cabinet.
This really aggravates the bird and he claws and scratches, and when the guy finally lets him out, the bird cuts loose with a stream of invective that would make a veteran sailor blush.
At that point, the guy is so mad that he throws the bird into the freezer.
For the first few seconds, there is a terrible din. The bird kicks and claws and thrashes. Then it suddenly goes very quiet.
At first the guy just waits, but then he starts to think that the bird may be hurt. After a couple of minutes of silence, he's so worried that he opens up the freezer door.
The bird calmly climbs onto the man's outstretched arm and says, "Awfully sorry about the trouble I gave you. I'll do my best to improve my vocabulary from now on."
The man is astounded. He can't understand the transformation that has come over the parrot.
Then the parrot says, "By the way, what did the chicken do?"

srnity: I don't teach kindergarten anymore and am not sure if these days they'd even let me have an animal in school. I let the kiddies take the rats out during play time. I had several rats (cuz at night the rats would fool around) ;) We had fish too...gold fish cuz they could survive the environment. I had some of them for over 5 years. Alas I haven't taught kindergarten for about 10 years. ;) (although I do have them come to me twice a week for art.

I used to have pet rats in my kindergarten class. They were the best. Very gentle and the only problem was they'd poop when you played with them.

Lambyless:  That's a great link.  I did a quick google search and National Geographic said pretty much the same thing.  Here's that story about the Maryland woman fighting the State over custody of her monkey.

story here

The lady was just on Fox news and said they were prepared to go to the highest court over this!   The pictures they showed we're kinda cute.  The monkey has it's own special room and she does give it lots of attention.  But that is not representative of what normally goes on with keeping monkeys as pets.   Most people find that the monkeys are difficult to keep as pets after they reach sexual maturity.  They often become agressive as they try to assert their dominance.

I'll stick with cats and dogs. ;)

I wouldn't be doing my job if I didn't ask the board to table the monkey discussion.  Actually, the discussion itself is fine, but I do ask that barbs aimed toward ChillChick be stopped.

Interestingly as I type this, Fox news has a piece on a custody battle between a woman and the State of Maryland.  And the custody is over?  You guessed it, a monkey.  I suspect she is in violation of the law too and they took her Monkey away.  I'll report, you decide. ;)

ChillChick:  This discussion board talks about issues concerning animals.  The people that participate on this board are very sensitive to animal rights and adherence to the laws of the state.   You're new around here and yet you've managed to have one of your posts moderated on the general chat board on your first post.  And after that experience, you manage to get into arguments with the people on this board.  As a moderator of this board, that sends up a red flag for me.  I want to caution you on any further provocation of others.

Sujet: California Laws and pet monkeys
it is no legal to own a pet monkey in the ENTIRE state of California.  If anyone owns a pet monkey in that state, they are breaking the law.

Read California's Wild Animal code to find that owning, importing and possessing monkeys is illegal in the entire state. Exceptions are only granted to zoos, museums and universities after a hearing and issuance of a permit.

Bernice:  He was blind too.  And if you didn't watch him, he'd walk right off the edge of the deck.  But he's was a fat boy and he'd just bounce and keep going.    He eventually had to be put down.  Very sick.  Another of our dogs went in for a checkup and was found to have cancer.  He was put down that day.  Both dogs were about 15 years old so I guess that's good.  The last one we have has been dead for over a year but she's doesn't know it yet.  So we keep feeding her and stuff til she figures it out.

Sujet: Most people foods aren't good for dogs but some is ok.
Vegetables. Most veggies are OK for dogs, either raw or cooked.  Rice and pasta are good too.  Our dog eats rice everday as part of her diet.  Cooked meat in small amounts (in moderation).  Our little dog gets boiled chicken daily too.  She's old and a vet recommended it.  It's helped as she had some serious problems with canned dog food.  Some dairy products are fine (low fat) but again, in moderation.

And many dogs love fresh fruits such as apples, berries, bananas, and seedless watermelon.   Once again, moderation is the key.
