If I have 10 pncils on my desk and you ask me if you may borrow a pencil and I reply yes you ma borrow a pencil, I will be surprised if you take more than one or less than one pencil from my desk top.
alanback: Its a question that only requires a yes or no answer. You could have no objection if I gave you no pencil as well. If you want or expect more than one you wouldnt ask for a pencil you would ask for a specifc amount.
grenv: I think it works pretty well right now, but not because it would be poor sportsmanship or any of those terms, just because it seems pretty fair.
But I too would like to have games completed more quickly, and the way it is currently set up does not lend itself to ending a losing game more quickly.
BIG BAD WOLF: Not bad sportsmanship either.... maybe "taking advantage of", but isnt that the goal of any game? To take advantage of a misplay by your opponent or to take advantage of a weaker strategy etc.?
You seem to support the idea that we are responsible some how for protecting people from their own ineptness.
Since the prize tournaments have to be paid in advance of the tournament starting, if it takes 10 years to finish, it will be a bargain 13 months membership!
grenv: Why would you refuse a game that early just because you are ahead? How far ahead? When would you want to accept? When yu are only up by one? I mean, lets say you are up 6 love in a 7 point match, I double you first chance I get, and you refuse, how many games can you afford to play that way? Not tryoing to be mean, I really am just curious?
pgt: Sorry for the stupid question.... I am only in my first few cube matches ever, and I am ahead in most of them, so the oppurtunity is so new to me, it seemed like the correct play, but I just wanted to check, plus I am not a rocket scientist either.
In a 5 point cube match, for example, and my opponent already has 4 points to my 3 or less, should I automatically ask for a double early in the game? Since losing more than 1 point wont hurt me, and my opponent will almost certainly have to accept it?
playBunny: Its just that for something like deleting a fellowship you must check 4 boxes, because it cant be undone. Well this is no different, and although I am not an idiot, its just a matter of sometimes clicking before my curser moves, I just dont know why in this case it is a huge joke to some and in other instances where it is already used, it is just fine? I have already lost one match where wanted to decline an offer but clicked the other button by mistake and then I got skunked on top of it all! UGGGG! hat woul;d it hurt to offer these form us 'idiots" and let the BBWs of the world choose to not have them shown?
grenv: LOL.... its not more trouble than its worth because it aint worth very much!
When I bought it, it was $100 compared to a computer in the $1000s. But computers are so cheap these days, I even know people who say they will give me their old one. But if they dont want it anymore, neither do i! But I have gotten used to some things about webtv. I like sitting on my couch and typing on a remote keyboard and using a 24 inch tv screen as my monitor. Plus I am wary of all of the anti virus and spyware stuff etc that I would have to understand in order to use a computer. on the converse, webtv isnt cheap to use either at 25 bucks a month! I will soon shed my fears and buy a computer though, maybe this christmas! Mabe Fencer will give out new computers to all webtv people who upgrade their memberships?
grenv: and play bunny.... yes, we are click happy, but the color code would not help. Like I said, its not a matter of reading, or understanding which one we want. For example when I amke a move in backgammon have to scroll down once and then click the right arrow twice then the enter/return key. It becomes automatic, but sometimes we do click so fast that the curser ends up somewhere else but we still automaticaly hit the return key anyway. Most of the time it is not a big problem. I end up hitting the change dice or something like that by accident and just hit the back button and try again. But with this, there is no going back, it is final und unchangeable, even when I reralize it the milisecond I do it. Mabe I will just have to slow down, but like I said, it becomes so automatic what to click to highlight where we want to go, but sometimes we just come up short one or two clicks, and again, its usually not a big problem to just try again.
Fencer: LMAO! No, I a not kidding! Are you???? I mean we have so many other times on this site where we go to a new page only to be asked if we "are sure?"... whats so funny about it here then. hy dont you just eliminate all of them and tell everyone to read more carefully? Jeez whiz!
Let me explain for you a little though.... it is not a reading or understanding problem for me. With webtv (I know you really dont like having to deal with us) its not a mouse system but we direct a cursor which highlights a box arund what we want to click on.... so we have to move this "highlight box" over many different choices before it highlights the one we want to click on. In this example we end up highlighting several choices before we get to the "do not accept this double offer", and we also end up highlighting the "accept this double offer" right before we use the right arrow button to move the highlight to the "do not accept this double offer" choice. Well sometimes we get goping so fast that we think we hit the right arrow to change the highlight to the "do not accept" but it ends up staying on the "accept" choice by accident and then we click the "return/enter" key before we realize that our curser has not moved to the correct choice yet, but by then it is too late, and we end up accepting the wrong choice by accident!
Maybe it is only concern for webtv, but then, why is it used in other places on this site? Anyway, it would help with those of us on webtv, and can be a common problem because we typically get our fingers moving to fast to try to make up for our already very slow process.
please dont tell me to get acomputer, I am going to son, but that is not the issue. here are obviuously a lot of paid users who use webtv, and it is important to sometoimes do things that help us out. (as I know you already do)
When we are asked to accept or reject a double offer in cube games, could we go to a new screen which asks us if we are sure or not? I have accidently clicked on the wrong one before and there is no going back! We already have many places on this site where we have to confirm our choices, would like this to be another as well. Thanks!
Here is my first cube match against the #3 ranked player... a nice 9 to 1 trouncing in a 7 point match! Seems like a lot of work for only one little win though....
I dont like the idea of not having seperate ratings for gammon games with and without the cube.... it seems like they are 2 very different games, with vewry different strategies.
Sorry I am sure this was already discussed somewhere in the past 400 posts, but are games played with the double cube considered for BKR the same as with all other backgammon games?
grenv: Well, it is cheap (and off topic?) its inexpensive too. LOL
a hundred bucks is all I paid. But you get some advantages besides the expense (we still pay a good price per month for access though) First, no viruses and stuff like that. Our monitor is our tv set (I have 3 tvs, a 27 inch screen one just for my WebTV) I sit on the couch and type away on a remote keyboard or we have a regular remote as well which functions all of the options as well.
We also have a lot of tv functions as well, which is important to many. Picture in picture so you can surf the web and watch tv at the same time. Plus it is great for recording tv as well. You can search the tv listings and click a show to record anytime it is on or search by artist and it will record anything they are in anytime, for example.
It really does anything that most people do on a computer ie email, search, play games, whatever, but w3e are not compatible with many sites, especially if they use flash and such. Thats why so many of us are here, because Fencer does a great job upgrading this site without leaving us behind! Also, like I said before, no viruses to worry about or buying programs like spywear etc.... because we dont really have any hard drive. But if you really use a computer, or demand high speeds, it probably isnt for you.
rod03801: Yeah, I found myself rushing way to much and yelling for the moves to be made faster. Sometimes I would just stay on the game and hkeep hitting reload until it was my turn and I was still playing over twice as slow as the computer users :(
wayney: I think games end up timing out when the script is read only after the time hits zero and not when it actually hits zero, but im not sure how long it takes, if it is every hour or what....
Yes, I like the idea, but webtv is too slow for 4 1 hour games at once, I could not keep up and I think Rod had the same problem, except for some reason the games did not time out when they hit 0 time left? How long does it really take to time out of a game with no time left? It took me 2 hours to finish all the games going as fast as could go with webtv :( Anyway, thanks for playing you guys and gals and I will try it again today, maybe a 2 hour total limit, cause its raining here and I have nothing else to do!
yeah, this sucks, I will be timing out in all of them, I tried to do this for the past 3 hours now, and I am off to bed soon.... oh well there goes my rating :(
oo late, I dont have any control; to delet it anymore :(
this really sucks that the games are ready to go but it could be up to an hour before they start?
grenv: Have you ever played a game of backgammon live (I am sure you have) ust roll the dice take your move and your opponent does the same.... my game is set up so it has a 1 hour total game time per person... give it a go! we ned 3 more people!
