Board for everybody who is interested in BrainKing itself, its structure, features and future.
If you experience connection or speed problems with BrainKing, please visit Host Tracker and check "BrainKing.com" accessibility from various sites around the world. It may answer whether an issue is caused by BrainKing itself or your local network (or ISP provider).
Preachor: Show game is the name of the applet on the server that is used to open the game page -- have you tried allowing the download to proceed even once? It may work. Otherwise, try clearing your cache, something may be corrupted in there.
A site I visited recently must have a graphic file with the same name as the white bishop here. Instead of a bishop next to my name, I have a little sign that says "Euribor". I'm searching my hard drive now for the little file wb1.gif so I can delete it!
I can't seem to find where Firefox keeps its cache . . .
Never mind, I found out how to clear the cache, now I have a bishop again.
Czuch Czuckers: Well -- of course there will be people who dispute either of those conclusions. I was not born Jewish but considered converting to Judaism while I was married to a Jewish woman; I would have been accepted into at least some congregations in the US, but I do not know whether as a convert I would have been recognized as Jewish for purposes, say, of Israeli citizenship. I doubt it. There are certainly persons of Jewish ancestry and heritage who have converted to other religions or have abandoned the Jewish faith, and still consider themselves Jewish.
Czuch Chuckers: Kid must have broken the board in your cache, clear the cache or hold up a picture of a backgammon board so the computer remembers what it is supposed to look like.
I must respectfully differ. A commodity is a substance that is standardized; one unit is like any other unit, which enables commodities to be traded in public markets at quoted prices. To be sure, some information is a commodity; that information which is freely available, now more than ever due to the internet. However, the most valuable information is that which is unique and not generally available; that is what can be sold at a premium price. That is why there are laws protecting "intellectual property". Therefore, while commodity information no doubt has value, it is not particularly valuable; and the most valuable information is not a commodity at all.
Time could be regarded as a commodity, since many of us sell our time at fixed prices, albeit over a wide price range. Few if any of us are able to sell our time at the price we choose; the price is fixed by market forces.
Yet the most important aspect of time is fundamentally not really a commodity at all. While we can buy the time of others, we can never buy more time for ourselves. And the most profound spiritual traditions regard time as only an illusion.
Chicago Bulls: One bit of information I didn't give you was that there was an error in the javascript console log. This was what convinced me it was a scripting problem, and since the update checker is a javascript app, I attributed the problem to it.
Czuch Chuckers: I think the problem was associated with the page update checker extension. I uninstalled that, and the site is now functioning properly in Mozilla.
Is anyone else having trouble with the links here? I have been experiencing a lot of situations where the browser just goes to a blank screen and stays there. This happens when I log in and when I submit a move, which implies to me it's some kind of a script problem. When I return to the site I find that I am logged in and that my move was made; I just never got to the page that follows those actions. It also only happens when I am using Mozilla, not with IE.
One of the most important features of this fabulous site is its message boards. The boards are in desperate need of some moderators with a sense of humor!
Skyking: In principle a good idea, though it would impose a burden on the moderators. At the very least, it would create a cooling-off period between posts.
Czuch Chuckers: Yep, site was inaccessible to me during that time. Oddly, I don't even get an internet error message, but simply nothing happens when I click on a link to the site.
Marfitalu: I do understand what tenuki is talking about, and I meant no disrespect for his opinions. There have been times when I have noted players who seemed to be manipulating the time rules. I find this more amusing than frustrating. As anyone who watches professional sports of any kind must realize, once a rule is adopted there is always the potential for it to be followed in a way that does not comport with what one supposes the intention of the rule to be.
As a lawyer, I am willing to argue to a court that a law is being applied in a way that thwarts its intention. In the USA, courts are often sypathetic to such arguments; in other countries, I believe courts tend to apply the laws as they are written and leave it to the rulemakers to change them if their intention is not being carried out.
Also as a lawyer, I know that any written rule is subject to being abused. Changing from one rule to another does not eliminate the potential for abuse, it simply changes the nature of that potential. As a game player, I tend to take a relaxed attitude towards this. Let those who find amusement in applying rules in ways they were never intended to be applied, do so; I can avoid those players when I recognize them.
And of course, let those who find amusement in arguing about what the rules should be, do so also!
tenuki: Perhaps you are mistken about the site you are on. This site is as it is, and what it is is defined by its rules. One of those rules is the automatic vacation.
Can someone explain to me why it is so important for moves to be made within a particular time frame? I thought games were played for relaxation!
As for me, I come to the site, I make whatever moves are available, and I get on with the rest of my life.
If making moves constantly is very important to you, then I believe you are certainly playing on the wrong site; you should go to a site where games are played in real time.
Moreover, and I think this has been pointed out before, it is possible to create and play games here in which vacation days are not allowed. Anyone who is concerned about the use of vacation days should avoid games and tournaments that allow them.
O čem je toďten plk: What's going on with the site today?
There have been two periods of time in which the site was totally inaccessible . . . has anyone else experienced that? When I clicked on a BrainKing link the browser would simply return to the page it was on before the click.
