I use the same Ethernet cable for this PC so i know thats ok. Dry joints......seems doubtful to be on all 3 units. (i know all 3 were working networkly before the company sold them off) The Ethernet card is on board, as in fixed straight to the mother board. I used the same XP Pro instal disk as i put on here (and on my LapTop Sunday) so thats fine.
It is most perplexing, it does sort of say the disk......but
Universal Eyes: I have downloaded the up to date drivers for that pc onto a USB stick, and installed them from there, so they should be ok.
I was given 2 IBM base units and a laptop. They were ex-company stuff, and all worked fine when they were networked in the enviroment. I have installed new opertaing systems on them (just XP Pro, which they were using before). Now the problem...... none of them will recognise the onboard Ethernet. I have tried everything i can think of. It knows the Ethernet is there, but thats it. In the device manager is showing as a problem along with the Vidoe Controller & Multimedia Audo Controller. I have been onto the IBM sites, found the correct drivers etc... downloaded them to a usb stick, and installed them. Still nothing.
O čem je toďten plk: Re:Virus-Test / system backup...
diogenysos: Well i have Driver Max running on my XP system. It checks for Driver updates daily. Also it keeps a copy of all your drivers on there system, which you can set to download if you do a fresh install as you say, THOUGH i have never tried to do that. As for programs, surely you can just download the most up to date version ? Funny enough, i am just about to do a fresh install of XP on here, and the one great pain is re-installing or the great software, maybe some bodkin should come up with a way of cloning the Program Files folder
rabbitoid: Well i don't pay and never have. The new Thunderbird handles numerous email clients (and it is still Beta). As long as you have your email addy & password it will do it all for you. You do not have to be a rocket scientist to work it.
(V): Yes, it does download them, BUT it is as secure as you can want, and this is the last Beta release.
I will leave it up to you all, i think its great, designed by web users, for web users. If you dont like it dont use it....simple
rabbitoid: Well yes & no. Like i said, this is an add-on. As with Firefox you dont have to use it that way. I just think its a good idea. Why open another application and take up more Ram, when you can do it from where you are.
There are some add-ons for Firefox that i could not get by with out, and what i find funnier is other browsers are actually building them into there software. Resizeable Textarea, being the foremost i think.
I have a googlemail account as well (that goes direct to Thunderbird, along with my Yahoo), and yes you get loads of space. Sad that yet again yesterday Gmail, went wrong - HERE. Twice in 2 weeks now.
I like going to one place and being able to do everything i could wish to do, and its fast as well.
Of course when i am on the web, i will use Firefox mainly. Well Prism when i am on brainking, as i do not think there is anything faster
Not for Firefox (for a change lol), but for Mozilla's Email client
I have been using Thunderbird for a while now, and have 5 Email accounts all accessed from there, as well as the latest News & Sports RSS feeds. So there it is all i need, in one place.
Now, this week i downloaded there last Beta release of the next version of Thunderbird (3.0b4). This has many new features, but what i think is the best bit is just like when you are browsing the web, you can open Emails in new Tabs (or Windows if you wish). OK, nothing special about that i hear. UNTIL you instal the ThunderBrowse add-on.
In short, when your friends send you stuff to read (Newsletter, RSS feed etc...), and send you a nice little link to click on, ThunderBrowse add browsings functions to Thunderbird. You can easily save time, space, and memory usage by opening up the website within Thunderbird as it usses the same technology as Firefox.
Anyway, thats my little gabble, i think its an awsome idea. I can do everything i want without even opening a browser like Firefox (IE, Chrome etc...)
Snoopy: Well, a lot of the problems have now been sorted. (apart from the security hole they found last week, that is in Vista AND Windows 7, which may now be sorted). As Microsoft admit thereselves, it should never have been released when it was. The main issues were a lack of proper drivers for it & application compatibility issues. I even got this email link the other day from PC-Pro - Microsoft admits Vista was less than good. Of course many of the issues have now beed resolved, which is ironic as they are just releasing Windows 7. I am a great believer in that is something is not broke, do not try and fix it. XP has been by far there most stable operating system, although now like i say i am going to give Ubuntu a try on one of my spare PCs. I used Vista when i was working, and never had any real problems, and most of the PCs & Laptops i repair now all seem to be Vista installed ones. My only advice is if you buy a new PC / Laptop with Vista on, make sure you have decent Avti-Virus and Spyware product (AVG & Spybot S & D are fine, but there are others), and make sure you download there latest service pack (i think it is SP2)
rabbitoid: Have you ? I have been thinking about it.
Then the other day Ubuntu had a stall in our local Town Centre giving DVD Roms away. I had a nice long chat with the guy, and thought its worth a try, especially if Windows 7 is as bad as Vista
How do you find it ? Takes a bit of getting used to i would imagine. Good that all the software is Open source
pauloaguia: lol, i know, thats why i added thte bit at the bottom about proof-reading, or if you are going to copy a page of information to post somewhere else. Could even check Fencer Blog
Firefox includes a built-in spellchecker that lets you know when you're misspelling words in an email or other text entry box. But what if you want to spellcheck an email that's already been sent or a web site that's already been published. In Firefox it is simple......Type
into your address bar. If you find it useful, I recommend that you store that code as a bookmark, I call it Spell Check for example.
Of course any changes will not be stored and any changes would be gone the next time you load the page, BUT still immensley useful for proofreading etc....
O čem je toďten plk: Re: archive downloading.......
sundiro50: Well, i had never heard of a .mat extension so i looked it up
There are 3 different types, so i guess it would be handy to know which one we are dealing with.
The most common one is a Microsoft one (Microsoft Access Table = MAT), and to open it you need Microsoft Access. You can download a free 60day trial of it, BUT it should be part of Microsoft Office (do not know about 2003 version).
Binabik: To be honest i have not checked Well not like FF anyway. That is the big thing with FF is that is it so resource hungry. As long as you have plenty of RAM you can not beat FF really. Is all i can say is try it
Binabik: Sorry i did not reply yesterday (Birthday drink and everything lol).
Did you try Exporting your Bookmarks to your Desktop and importing from there ? If it is speed you are looking for Mozilla do a Application (that is also a Firefox Add-on as well) called Prism. It is faster than any browser as it runs a website as an application as such (for want of complicated terms lol). You get nothing else apart from the webpage, no Add-ons, no forward/backwards, Bookmark buttons etc..etc....
If you fancy using it, i would suggest downloading the Add-on version into Firefox. Once installed, just click Tools on any website you use (or spend a lot of time at) and in the pop-up menu you select 'Convert website to application'. Give it a name when the page pops up, and it will create a Icon on your desktop.............. instant speed lol
All this said, try to get the Bookmarks sorted as well lol
O čem je toďten plk: Re: I have a little problem with FF 3.5
rabbitoid: I can not say i have my friend, if anything 3.5 is faster
Have you cut the number of posts it displays on a page down ? or as you say, maybe it is linux.
One thing i have found that i use is Prism (made by Mozilla labs as well). Basically, it turn any website you visit, into an application and runs it like that. Much faster. The only downside is you can not use Add-ons with it lol.
Oh, and i do not know if it will work on linux eiither
Well i am sure we all know what was happening 40 years ago, yep, people were walking on the moon I get lots of great stuff from all over the web to do with computers and technology. I got this today, that i thought i would share
Ever fancied being on that first flight to the moon ? Well, take a look at THIS little journey awesome....
Is Facebook really worth $6.5 billion? - Can this be because BrainKing now has a page there OR because Facebooks Russian backers agreed to pay $14.77 a share for Facebook common stock ???? I wonder lol
I would not normally post anything from one of my Fellowships on a public board BUT i think this is quite important
For those of you who are interested, and have young families, i think this is for you AND its from our friends at Mozilla of course, yep, those that bring you Firefox AND Thunderbird
I read an article a while back that said the EU were going to make MS include more than ONE browser on there systems (obviously IE, Firefox and another). This seems to of changed though with what has been released.
I do not know what is going to happen. If there is no Browser on the system you buy, how do you download a different one . I think all Browsers are free, so there is no financial incentive as such anywhere. Maybe IE, Firefox etc... are all going to give away Cd's in shops or something, I will have a look round and see if i can find out
pauloaguia: I will check, but dont think it will be. Its been fine for 2 years since she brought it, i think maybe just a fan is knackered ir lots of dust in there. Will let you know
(V): No, not sister, shes scared of electrical things lol. I build & repair them for a hobby, so i always give it a clean when i am doing something to it. I will get over there this weekend
pauloaguia: Just spoke to her, must be over heating. It does it later in the day normally, when the computer has been on a few hours. I will have to get there over the weekend and see what the fans are up to. I have a few old base units in the cupboard, hopefully there is one there somewhere i can use
I told her to slide the side of the unit off just so air can get through for now
Houston, we have a problem !!! (well, sister does in fact lol)
Why does her computer keep freezing ? No matter what its doing, in fact it can just be sat on the desktop with nothing else running, and it stops, no nothing, not even able to move the cursor
I even installed a new system on it yesterday, and it still does it which obviously points to hardware ?
Any ideas anyone ? The only one i can thing of is maybe its over heating
For anyone who still has speed issues with the site try this out:
Mozilla Labs Launches Prism 1.0 beta - Prism is an application that lets users split web applications out of their browser and run them directly on their desktop
If you do not want any frills, but want to charge through your games, go for it
More news is emerging about the forthcoming release of Windows 7. It seems that Microsoft is reluctant to completely let go of its most successful operating system, Windows XP, which they now no longer fully support. It seems that Windows 7 will come complete with a full Windows XP installation included, designed to run inside a virtual PC environment inside Windows 7, which will allow the huge range of software designed to work with Windows XP to run in Windows 7.
The new XP mode, called XPM, requires advanced virtualisation features provided by the latest generations of Intel and AMD processors, will be available in the Professional, Ultimate and Enterprise editions of Windows 7. XP applications that use XPM will not need to be installed in a separate XP desktop. Instead the applications will be integrated in to and available from the Windows 7 desktop. This approach has a number of benefits for Microsoft, including the fact that they don’t have to include lots of code in the main core of Windows 7 to maintain backwards compatibility with older applications, making Windows 7 leaner and faster.
O čem je toďten plk: Re: New look Brainking Main Page
Czuch: Hopefully when i have finished, it will look better & cleaner, and be useful
Just show you next few games, get rid of all the stuff on both side of the brainking pages, and a few extra buttons that are useful, basically like hexkid use to have
BUT of course to take advantage, you will have to use Firefox
Does anyone know how to set a default Text editor, or change it. I have tried every way i know, and it only seems to half work
I am trying to work with Greasemonkey to write & modify scripts for web pages.
I have a .js file stored on my desktop, and if i right click and click open, it opens in WordPad, which is great
Now, if i go into 'Manage User Scripts' in Greasemonkey, select the script i want from my list, and click edit, it opens it in NotePad, which is no good for me.
I have gone into Folder options in Control panel and made sure .js open in WordPad (and .jse).
Everything seems fine. So why does it keep opening them in NotePad from Greasemonkey ???
(V): Its strange how different PC's and people can get away with certain things. The first decent PC i brought years ago had McAfee with it, and i had no end of problems with that.
These days most of home PCs i get asked to sort out have Norton that is causing the problems. Well, when i say problems, it seems to come with most PC's in the UK as a free 3 months trial these days. Most of them i end up taking it off and putting AVG on them. I used to use AVG as well, but every now and again it has an issue with the package i get with my connection.
(V): Why would it interfere when playing a game ? you should not run it then really.
Mine runs happily when i am in bed or out shopping. I would never run any security software while i have any other applications running.
Looking at the picture Czuch it looks like what you get many programs do, tell you that you have security issues etc... when in fact there is no problem. Basically trying to get you to purchase software.
I normally run Spybot once a week, have a Firewall / Anti-virus that comes with my broadband package, and as i said use CCleaner (for getting rid of crap and sorting registry issues). Also i run Eusing Free Registry Cleaner 2.0 every couple of weeks just in case. Shields Up is worth running as well.
I have not had any PC problems in a few years now.
