Binabik: Why your icon is named "vddf" - I have no idea. Try to just rename it back to "firefox", that should work ;)

I never had a problem with disappearing bookmarks, but I heard about it just this week. There is an update for both, firefox 1.5 and firefox 2.0 which should fix it.

Firefox keeps a profile for every user on your system. (It's in "%APPDATA%\Mozilla\Mozilla Firefox\Profiles").

nightmagic: What do you mean by "Firefox is not complete yet"? If you mean that is changing from time to time: yes, it is a product that is constantly improved. But it is "complete" in the meaning that it is totally ready for productional use. All changes are small improvements or new features, but I don't know anything you can do with IE but not with FF.
Firefox is actually a very mature browser so to speak.

Finally got my comp back on-line now. Had to un-install everything from Nortons just to get MSN to work. I'm wondering why Norton firewalled MSN even after I rebooted the whole comp? I'm using McAfee Security at the moment & the comp is actually going alot faster than before. I tried using firefox 1 time & it was running extremely slow then. IE seems to me to work better

Do you mean that I don't have to "go in there" and establish my own profile?

FF already updated itself to 2.0 - sorry, still don't trust it, it's lost my bookmarks too many times.

I also have Opera installed, but that seems to hiccup more on this site, though it never lost my bookmarks

And do you also use McAfee? I don't like Norton either....

Binabik: No, you don't have to, Firefox does this all on itself. And perhaps I didn't express myself clear enough: For both Firefox versions 1.5 and 2.0 there is an update available which should fix your problem. For Firefox 2.0 it's 2.0.0.2. So check your version number ("Help"->"about Firefox"). If it starts with 2.0 but is not 2.0.0.2, an update might solve the disappearing bookmarks. Something caused that in particular situations the profiles were created with a write protection, so that firefox couldn't store the bookmarks permanently. This should be gone with 2.0.0.2/1.5.0.10. If it still doesn't store them, you could manually check if the profile folder is write protected..

Onderwerp: Help "Application pop ups"
Ok.. I need help from one of you computer pros!!

I finally ditched webtv and bought a laptop. So, you will probably have to explain like you are talking to a child! lol

I come online through Juno. It has a pop up blocker, and seems to work well, as I don't get many pop ups at all. (Though, most of my online time is really spent here at BK anyways) However, I keep getting these pop ups that dont look like typical ads. They look like messages you get from your computer. (Typical dialog boxes telling you stuff that is going on, like when downloading.. with an OK button, and the typical windows type stuff, the X , minimize and maximize buttons

They are telling me such as "55 critical errors have been found, go to this website, blah blah blah.. " and telling me to go places like 32sys.com, regproscan.net, helpfixpc.com(NOT Microsoft sites like I would think it would). The first time I started getting these, I did visit the site. It wanted me to basically download something that would find things, and I could pay for it to fix them. I also got a pop up saying something about the "certificate" and the site could not be confirmed. So, I did nothing.

A friend said it sounded like spyware, so I downloaded a spy bot ran it and it found a bunch of stuff, and I got rid of it. The pop ups persisted.

Later, I got looking around, and found an Event Log (Start/Settings/Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Event Log)... Lo and behold, EVERY one of these pop ups were logged in there, and called "application pop ups". If I clicked on each individual event, it showed me an exact copy of the messages in the various pop ups.

I then downloaded a virus scan through Microsoft, and it found nothing.

Please, someone must have some advice! These popups are making me crazy. They are coming 3 or 4 per minute sometimes!

rod03801: The messenger service should be disabled by default if you have all the latest updates to Windows XP. If you don't have the updates, you should get them because they will make your computer less insecure. Run the "Windows Update" program, which should be near the top of the "All Programs" menu on the start menu. It may take a long time to download all the updates, and you may have to run it multiple times.

Also, turn on your firewall.

I have noticed that every time I power off, and boot back up, that that messenger service is turned back on, and those pop up messages start coming fast & furious again. So I seem to have to shut it back off each time I come online. Hopefully after this upgrade is installed this will stop??

Jason: I ran a virus scan a few days ago, and it found nothing. I wonder if there is any way to completely remove the Windows Messenger? (Since I intend on shutting off everytime it comes back on.) I wonder why it doesn't stay off.. What sort of legitimate things would it be used for? (Wondering if I am going to regret turning it off? But I can't deal with those things popping up a few times a minute)

It doesn't sound like I virus.   It sounds like you've had a program installed onto your computer.  How long have you had the computer and do you have a restore point on your computer?  If you do, you could restore it to an earlier date and see if that helps.

It says msn but mine is windows too. If it don,t work the first time do it a few times and let the pc reboot.

If so click start then control panel ,then open the icon for add and remove programs when that opens on the left hand side look for add or remove windows components ,when that opens scroll down untill you see windows messenger and take the tick out , then it wont start up .

For older PC's like 98, 2000 - or XP computers without the newest updates, it will not change automatically.

Where I work, I will be busy Monday - out of the 90 computers, about 10-15 are older that I will need to update - along with a time clock, phone system, and voice mail system which are programmed with the old rules - so i'll have to manually fix those (and then fix again in a few weeks when the time was suppose to change.)

Onderwerp: Speed up BrainKing
Well I’ve seen others complain that it seems to take longer to load pages on Brainking – well at least longer then it use to, and even though I stayed away from complaining about it, I did see the same thing. 2-7 seconds to load each page. Ugh.

So I did some tweaking with the settings, and found some things that really help – 0-2 seconds per page load most of the time! Here are the tips:

  • Use Firefox if you can. Faster then Internet Explorer.

NOTE: For the settings below – some are for members only – so if are a pawn and are unable to change certain settings, that could be the reason.

    BrainKing Settings: http://brainking.com/en/Settings

General Tab: Get rid of things you don’t need or use. What I use:

  • UNCHECK – Show menu on game pages (less info to load – faster load time)
  • UNCHECK – Show game filter on the main page (less info to load – faster load time)
  • UNCHECK – Show tips of the day (less info to load – faster load time)
  • UNCHECK – Show tournament tip (less info to load – faster load time)
  • UNCHECK – Show “Yesterdays active player” (less info to load – faster load time)
  • UNCHECK – “Display backgroung “BrainKing” image (less info to load – faster load time)
  • Number of my best BKR shown on main page: NONE (less info – faster load)
  • Number of games shown on the main page: I like mine set at All, but if you have a lot of games – picking something smaller can help load time
  • Submit move actions – currently 20 actions available – each one takes a little more space – so only pick the ones you use. I personally have 8 picked, but could easily bring that down to about 4.

JavaScript Tab: Get rid of things you don’t need or use. What I use:

  • UNCHECK – Active pulldown game menu. This is the list of 20 games in the upper left corner. I always loved it there, but once I started to think about it – I never used it – so like others (less info to load – faster load time)
  • UNCHECK – Enable fast lookup at search forms – not sure exactly what this one was, but don’t think I used it – so away it goes.
  • *LOTS OF SPEED* - UNCHECK – Show message preview at the Message box.
    • This one will show you a preview when you have something in your message box.
    • This will also show you a preview of public boards in your favorites
list. I have 20 public boards in my favourites board list - so that means the last message from each of those 20 boards would load on each page that shows the favourite boards list.
    • This will also show you a tournament preview in a tournament game (That is mouse over the tournament link on a game page, and the tournament status page pops up). I liked this option at first - but this one of my biggest time savers - since for example, a 7 player tournament playing 2 games each counted as an extra 12,933 characters in EVERY page load. So if you have a game which takes 5 moves to play, that is 5 extra times that 12,000+ extra characters has to be loaded!
    • So getting rid of this option was one of my best choices!

  • Autosave interval – I have none, but don’t think it will slow page load if you have it set.
  • Smiley windows: I have on mouse click since I have when my mouse accedently moves over it and it tries to pop up – but should not slow down initial page load.
  • UNCHECK – Show context menu – less info to load, faster page load.

  • IN A GAME:

  • When you get ready to submit a move – there is the game list that you can choose to go to next. Each game is written into the page source adding to the time it takes to bring up that page. So if you don’t use this option – HIDE IT (If you have few games, probable not a big deal - have many then you can start to see the slow down)
  • Game Notations – each game has this on the right hand side. If you don’t use it, hide it. Long games can have hundreds+ moves – again, less data to load on the page, the quicker it can go.

OK - that is all for now. Anyone else have other suggestions or ideas?

[AGAIN - these are what I choose - if you use certain option I say turn off, then don't turn them off - use them. Biggest thing is to get rid of the things you don't use.]
