BBW: I 100% agree, whoever starts a tournament should be able to make sure it runs correctly, in fellowships mainly.
My only concern i about rated ones, what if your rating is good enough (or bad - depending) at the time of entering, but then changes ??
I do like the idea of letting the person who creates the tournaments to be able to kick certain people out of the tournament.
This could come in handy when:
1. A pawn or Knight enters and does not have enough spots (like when the max players are set to 4 or 5 - it could mean the tournament will not start unless they are removed)
2. Also when someone somehow gets into a tournament and their rating is outside of the "scope".
...........
But on the other hand, I can see this being abused and causing some people to get mad when they are removed from a tournament. Something to think about though.
It has never happened to me, but i have seen a few cases where people were allowed to join when they shouldn't have (especially when unrated is set to no, it seems unrated players can still join sometimes).
For me, it always gave me the message something like "You cannot join this tournament because your [insert game here] rating (####) is out of the defined range".
Just for kicks, I tried entering some tournaments that I was rated either too high or too low for, and I was able to do it!? I was expecting to see some note saying I didn't qualify, but instead my name was placed on the list, which I immediately removed.
Then, I wondered if someone deliberately or by accident made such an entry, how would it be handled? Do the organizers delete anybody who should not be there when they start the tournament?

Everyone that enjoys chess but not getting trashed by superior opponents is welcome to join. This is also a great opportunity to try out all the variants you always wanted to but didn't for a reason or another.
I guess I did understand the TD needed to start the tournament. I was concerned about starting it before the assigned sign up date.
Since the required number for the minium players is met and it looks as if all players can participate, I assumed I could start the tourament with out it being canceled for some silly reason on the tourey bot.
The tournaments are not started automatically - that is the job of the tournament creator :-)
When you want to start it, click the button that says "Close for Signups" on the tournament page. That will take you to another page in which you will be allowed to start the tournament. Remember you have to click two buttons (one to close sign-ups and another to start the tournament) before it will start.
And also when the first round completes, if there is to be a 2nd round, that is your job to start as well. It will not start automatically ;-)
Thanks for your help Kevin. Just to make sure I have things clear here.
The tournament now has 4 people, 3 are unrated. Of the three one has 11 games started, once the tourney starts he will have a total 19 games stared. If I close the tournament early will all the games start? Currently none will exceed the 20 game max allowed to pawns.
I would think the tourney bot would recognize the minum number of players required to start and would start the tournament.
Strange indeed.
It would just be a good idea to not start the tourney until you have either at least 4 rooks signed up, or more than 4 other players - the more the safer you are! :-)
(or, if you wanted to, you could check all the pawn and knight profiles to see how many games they had, and see which ones will not have room for it) :-)
So what do you do if the tourney doesn't start because of someone not qualifying? Can you just get another player, or do you have to start over with a new tournament?
If you click to close a tournament, it has to have at least the minimum number of people signed up or the tournament will be deleted. (So if the minimum is set to 4, at least 4 need to be signed up)
What makes it tricky is if a pawn or Knight sign up and they don't have enough room, then they are "kicked" out of the tournament which might send the total number back below the minimum number - meaning the tournament will not start.
I read the following:
Please don't forget that you cannot close the tournament for sign-ups before the date and time specified at the Last term to sign up field passes. After this action is performed, all tournaments with less than defined minimum number of players will be deleted.
Does this mean if a tournament has a minimum of 4 people, only 3 sign up, then the tournament is deleted? The statement "After this action is performed, all tournaments with less than defined minimum number of players will be
deleted." leads me to believe all tournaments with a minimum amount of players will be deleted? A more clear explanation of the statements would helpl
Apple03: Could you not get on because of the site acess problems ? If so just send Fencer a message with the game number and explain, he will normally reinstate it :-)
grant: Considering it is 2 games against each player, and you will probably be in an 8-person section (based on the # of sign-ups) you could have as many as 14 games in that tournament.
ive just joined the backgammon open, can u tell me is it divided into small groups when it starts for a rounds type thing, i just want to know how many games to expect, thanks in advance for replys.
Still need some players for:
Five in line
Spider line 4
Reversi 8x8
Halma 8x8
for tournament starting Friday, help if you can spare a little place or 2 please lol
Icon, it also depends if you want to play for fun or not! There are a lot of serious players here, I play more for fun, but some of my teams have very serious players... I guess fellowship captains will soon get to know which are the 'serious' ones, and play more often against those, if thats their choice.
I'm assuming the teams will have to agree on how many players, and only that many players will play. Although, it would be possible with uneven players. And why do the ratings have to be equal? It will never happen exactly, and even if it does the ratings are never a completely accurate representation of a player's ability until they play infinite games :-)
i have some space left in crowded backgammon & tablut if anyone can help out , also just set up battle boats if anyones interested ;~))
