grenv: I couldn't agree with you more. And it is pretty obvious that people do look them up from what I have seen on other sites. The only way I would even think about playing is if it were a 1 hour game.
Vikings: Yes, would have been nice to start the new year with some Team Tournies. Saying that, the others havent even got to round 2 yet.
I can't wait for the stairs, we can have challenges running all the time then. Like we do now, but they will count for something. I did think about a League to start with, but will take alot to sort out i think after chatting to a couple of people.
My internet connection is not reliable but I would like to be able to play games still on brainking.
It would be nice if you could make a windows application that could buffer the games I have to make a move on and those I have made a move on and in the background keep trying to download new games and submiting my moves back to the site.
This way even if I don't have an internet connection I can still play until I have played on all games that were my turn to play on last time I had an internet connection.
Czuch Czuckers: how about Larousse, or Robert? they're the standard french ones :)
My point is, have a look at the upper right part of the screen, you'll see (currently) 16 little rectangles, 15 of which represent good reasons why this kind of game will be very, very difficult to implement on this site.
pgt: no, because the computer probably does not use words that arent in the OSPD....
I would think that a scrabble game here could give us a choice of which dictionary we would use in any particular game? If you wanted to play with words only contained in the oxford standard dictionary, well that would be fine!
grenv: Actually, in scrabble it is okay to put up any word you want to, even if it isnt in thew scrabble dictionary, then its up to your opponent to challenge the word, if there is no challenge, then even a non word is a legal play!
jurek: I think the problem with online scrabble is that it's too easy to look up words. When playing scrabble it's fine to put ogrism if you thought of it yourself with no help from a dictionary.
Are you saying that because certain words aren't in your vocabulary or known to you, then they're not allowable? This is the whole point of using dictionaries as a reference for allowable words. Is Random House not a good enough source?
The OSD changes every year, so it's quite possible that those 3 words were recent additions. I don't have one on hand, so I can't verify that, however.
rabbitoid: (sigh!) Well, I suppose you might be right about OGRISM, but I guess if you're into ogrisms it doesn't matter how you spell it. Perhaps "AhAhAhWOW" would be ok?
But SOD does not allow YUK, YUCK or YEUK, even though I use a word which sounds something like that when calves liver is served.
I also love game, which is why I am making a plea to play it with real words. My wife and I play several times a week: we have gone right through the SOD (in 1987) and documented all of the allowable 2-letter words, so that there are no arguments. (And before 1987 I didn't know that an "AI" was a 2-toed south american sloth!)
pgt: why, of course yeuk exists! it's what I always say when I find anything but carrots for dinner. Ogrism sounds like that mania of a BK player that always insisted on inviting me to a maharadja with me as white. Since he's on my blocked list, I don't know if he's still ogring about. I admit that qiviut has me stumped for the moment, but I'm still recovering from yesterday's excesses. I'm sure I'll come up with something later. I like that game!
joshi tm: I have played scrabble (against a computer) on a couple of sites. The problem I have is that they use dictionaries with words which don't actually exist. I have had "YEUK", "QIVIUT" and "OGRISM" played against me, and I have checked my copy of the Shorter Oxford Distionary and none of these words, or anything like them, appear anywhere. Scrabble is a great game, but it is completely ruined by made-up words which do not occur in ANYBODY's vocabulary. Please save us from scrabble on this site, unless we can use the Oxford or Websters dictionary and not one of those ridiculous dictionaries with words which one must "learn" in order to compete.
When you look up a particular game to see what tournaments include it, I suggest that there is no point showing tourns where the game is already running. Please could we see games where we may join up.
joshi tm: I would guess Fencer could make different language of the game - depending on if their are different dictionaries of different languages that Fencer can download and use for free. I believe there are at least a few free English language dictionaries - not sure off hand of other languages, but I'm sure there are some.
I don't think he should "mix" different languages in the game, but I don't see why there can't be Scrabble (English), Scrabble (Czech), etc... (of course not called Scrabble.
Hope this hasn't already been discussed, any chance BrainKing could have a "Scrable" type word game? There is a great word game Jamble that is played on another not so great game sight.
Subiectul: Re: I think its great we can now see how we are doing in a Tournament from within a game itself, just by hovering over the Tournament name.
Cool - I did not know that. I find it a little annoying for the discussion boards (since there is a new message I'll click on them anyway), but I'm always checking on the tournament while playing the game and this feature will allow me to not leave the game page to check. Very cool!
Subiectul: Re: I think its great we can now see how we are doing in a Tournament from within a game itself, just by hovering over the Tournament name.
WellyWales: Thanks very much! The bottom box was unchecked, thanks to you too Madmonkey. It works nows, its great, it works when you hover over the title of the discussions boards too. I read the last reply before I clicked on the board lol!
Subiectul: Re: I think its great we can now see how we are doing in a Tournament from within a game itself, just by hovering over the Tournament name.
MadMonkey: How do you get that to work? I just tried hovering and nothing happens, I checked Java script settings and can,t see anything appertaining to it.
I think its great we can now see how we are doing in a Tournament from within a game itself, just by hovering over the Tournament name. Could you expand on this Fencer please. So we can use the same idea on the Fellowship page or any Tournament links we have.
Also, how about from within a game you could hover over game rules at the top and get a shortened page of Rules for a game. Most games are only a variation of another so would only need short amount of space.
oh, and while im here, could we have a better way to sort Team Matches out in a Fellowship, by date started, game etc...
emmett: Thanks for that - I think I knew that already so I obviously asked the wrong question. What I meant to ask is "is there an easy way - without locating the individual games - to get the date/time of the first move of the first game in a multi-game match?"
When you look up a particular game to see what tournaments include it, I suggest that there is no point showing tourns where the game is already running. Please could we see games where we may join up.
On the Waiting Games board, under the "Event" column, unrated games are listed as "Normal game". I request that it be listed in that column as "unrated game".
pauloaguia: Yes, Black Rooks can become inactive. Also, it is possible for games/matches to go years if a player doesn't log in.
Actually, as I have thought about it...There are two classes of inactive players (Paid vs. free accounts). However, with the exception of the Black Rook, inactive accounts will revert back to pawns.
So, what I would like to see:
1. Anyone (paid or free) that hasn't logged in in over a month be flagged as inactive. This is just simply a visual note to other players. Nothing happens to the account or their games.
2. Anyone that hasn't logged in for over 6 months automatically forfeits their games. Even if there are vacation days left. An email should be sent before a forfeit is forced. There should be a way for the player to contact an admin (Fencer) and get an waiver for extenuating circumstances.
3. Any pawn that hasn't logged in in a year has their account flagged as "Dormant". To other players, its as if the account doesn't exist. If the Dormant player logs back in, their account is then reactivated. An email should be sent to the player when the account goes Dormant. Note, it shouldn't matter when the account reverted to a pawn. For example, if I paid for a rook account, then never logged in for the entire year, the account would revert to pawn AND go dormant at the same time.
4. When creating multi-game matches or tournaments, The creator should be able to set an inactive clause. If the player doesn't log into Brainking for a specified number of months (1 to 5 months...See item 2), they forfeit ALL remaining games. This way the players can still use auto-vacation but the opponents are protected from inactive players.
5. The main page, where it lists "Opponents Turn in..." games. could break the list of games into active vs. inactive games.
For rooks and above, these items aren't that important. But, for knight, bishop, and pawn accounts, where the number of games is limited, running into players that go inactive can be quite annoying.
mctrivia: could they be marked as retired where every one can see that way team captains cannot include them in matches when they come back they remove the retired symbol
Mr. Shumway: Just never except a game at all with time out greater then 300 days per move. If you can't play that often your game will never end anyways.
Pedro Martínez: It won't help people that already have such games, but it helps avoiding such situations. If you get an invitation for a game without time control, you are explicitly warned that it could be never-ending. Any other game will, as already noted, time out after some time. And please note the ";)" at the end of my post about that "solution" ^^
