Nirvana: I have mentioned this before. I posted that I would not renew my paid membership until this was implemented. Fencer said he wouldn't implement it at all because he didn't accept threats (even though I was just making a statement, not a threat). So I'm sorry if I ruined it for everyone, but Fencer won't do it. :-(
Too bad, too. It would remove the biggest problem with this site.
Time limits cause problems and the system needs to be fixed. Period.
I am stuck in my only tournament. It is single elimination and my opponent resigned because of he got tired of waiting. Now, since I 'won' I'll be in the next round (whenever that is) so I can't even PM management and ask them to remove me! This sux.
I entered a tournament. I can't play in another until it's over, which is fine, except that I've already spent more time waiting for the next round than I spent playing my game. And I expect that to continue for all the additional rounds. And of course I can't get out of it either. I'd resign if I could. The tournament implementation is poor, poor, poor. I guess I've learned my lesson, which is don't play in tournaments here. Now I know.
BrainKing64: You can only see games you can accept to play in the waiting area. Since you can't accept your own game invites, you don't see them, but you can see them at the bottom of your main games page.
MadMonkey: I used to be a paying member at that site you mention. There are a multitude of problems there. Much worse than here. Over there the Pente stones were (and still are) reversed. White goes first, but not at that site.
Rainbow Road: I'd bet that if someone made a nice set of icon, that Fencer would implement them as selectable in your user settings similar to how you can choose different chess pieces now.
Just let players set the maximum number of vacation days in any game/ tournament/round allowed when setting up and new game/tournament and the problem is solved. We can set the level of opponent, time parameters, etc. Why not let us allow the maximum number of vacation days? Why do we get to set most of the parameters, but Fencer gets to set that one? Doesn't make sense to me.
There should be a user-definable maximum number of vacation days that can be used in any game/tournament/round. I played in one tournament where a player used OVER 100 vacation days. That's just stupid.
There should be some implementation of restarting timed-out games. This opens up a whole new can of worms in tournament situations, but there is surely no reason to forbid a timed-out game between friends from being restarted.
I should be able to save the default time for games that I want. I prefer Fiscjer's clock with 7/0/7, but I have to change it every single time I start a new game. This should probably be done on at least a family of games level. I.e. I should be able to set my pente games to default to 7/0/7 and my espionage games to 30/.5/30, etc.
mctrivia: For those who want to think about how much money Fencer is or is not making, I'm NOT renewing my membership because of the way tournament rounds don't advance here. I don't need to pay money to be stuck in the same tournament for the duration of my entire membership without my opponent making a single move in a meaningless game! Somebody let me know when that works properly and maybe then Fencer can have some of my cash. That we even have to ask, repeatedly, for such a 'feature' is asinine.
Fencer: If a typical player wants to play games as quickly as possible why don't you:
1) Limit vacation days in any one game. Bobes hasn't moved since MARCH in these games: Pente (Thad vs. Bobes) Pente (nosovs vs. Thad) He's used at least 100 vacation days. That's ridiculous.
2) Start the second round (and additional upper rounds) of a tournament once the section winners are all determined. I got a knight membership about six months ago to be able to play in more tournaments, but I haven't because Bobes won't move in the above games, EVEN THOUGH THEY'RE MEANINGLESS in terms of who will qualify for the next round of the tournament. If the next round had started, it would probably already be finished! Instead, every player just sits and waits. We are all being held hostage by the selfishness of one player and that's not fair. If there's one thing a game site should be, it's fair.
Why don't tournaments advance to the next round once the winners are known? Is management trying to keep low tier members locked into tournaments as long as possible so they'll upgrade? That's pretty lame.
Just like the little green icon next to a player indicating that s/he is online, I'd like to see a mark next to any game on the main games page where my opponent is actually playing (or looking at) that game.
I set up a game with time limits of 1/0/15. I meant to use settings of 1/.8/15. Of course this is lame because there's no way to add bonus time and get to the full limit of 15 days. The game was effectively a two day game and I lost on a timeout even though I was way ahead on material.
We need a warning whenever 'dumb' timer settings are selected for a game/match.
MTC: I am in a tournament where there was several months in between rounds due to a few meaningless games. This tournament had many world-class players in it (plus me), but several of them have not been here for a month or more and now those games will simply time out. It is too bad that such a wonderful tournament with so many strong players will have such a crappy ending due to Fencer's inability to program BrainKing to move tournaments forward in a timely manner.
I know there are many people who feel that the formula used to calculate BKR, while fine for chess, simply doesn't work for many other games here at BrainKing. In a pure skill game like chess, the better player will win a high percentage, let's say 90%. In backgammon, the better player might win only 65% of the time. Because the formula is expecting chess-like winning percentages it doesn't work so well for Backgammon. In Pente variants, the player who goes first wins 52-57% of the time. This is due to an advantage that Player 1 has. That advantage should be incorporated into the BKR formula. I can't speak about other games, but I'm sure there are more examples.
However, I'm sure Fencer has neither the time nor the interest in developing and implementing formulas for each family of games. On the other hand, I'm sure there are many players (including me) who would enjoy researching and developing some new formulas. Perhaps, like was done with moderators, the job of coming up with the best formula(s) could be passed along to members of the BrainKing community!
So, my feature request is...
Separate BKRs by game type (i.e. one for chess types, one for backgammon types) and committees to review, discuss, and recommend the proper formula to Fencer for each game type. I suppose a formula could be developed for each game individually, but let's take it one step at a time. ;-)
Separate formulas for each game type would at least be a huge step in the right direction. I would be happy to join a committee for both Pente and Backgammon. With the fellowships and discussion boards already in place, this idea could be up and running in no time.
Can you change the subjects of game notices so that when a match is over, it's different from the message I get when just one game within a match is over.
Let's say I want to challenge someone who I play frequently. It's really hard to sort thru all my undeleted messages to find the one that's from the end of a match. And that's the easiest place to start a new game invitation, so it would be nice if those emails were easy to spot.
Субъект: BKR for families of games and one for all games
Why are BKRs limited to separate ratings for each type of game? Why not have a BKR for all backgammon variants combined? One for chess, one for Pente, etc. Also why not an overall BKR for each player covering all (rated) games played regardless of game type. Yes, I know this would lead to a bit of apples to oranges comparison, because good chess players are more likely to win consistantly than good backgammon players due to the luck of the dice, but I still think it would be a great addition to this site.
Could you put the move number (in parentheses, so it's visually differnet than the score) where the dashes currently are on tournament pages? Seeing all those dashes for incomplete games is poor use of real estate. Let's put something meaningful and useful there. In backgammon, the current score of the match could appear there.
And while we're at it, in a message that a game is over why can't the button that creates a new invitation keep all the settings from the just-completed match?
Why hasn't the game filter been placed on waiting games? Also, it should be set up so we can filter by family too. I mainly play pente and espionage. When I play my pente games, I don't care whether it's open pente or whatever variant. When I play espionage, same thing, any variant is fine. We need to be able to filter our games by family.
We need the date that a game was started and the ability to sort by it on our main game page. Too many users are holding up tournament games. These players often have hundreds of games going and some do a good job of keeping the games moving, but if you are playing in a 7-day/move tournament, you can pretty much count on certain players taking 6 days and 12 hours between moves every time. If these players had the ability to sort their games by start date, perhaps they'd see that they got one game going that's holding up a tournament that was started more than six months ago and they'd move more frequently in these old games.
Could we get an option to have only a portion (say, last ten) of the moves list shown. It's a big pain to look up the last move when I'm over 100 moves into a game (as is common in espionage and happens in other games too).
PS: I second Nothingness's request for volcano-free espionage games.
Субъект: Re: change time for games to appear in red
Walter Montego: I sorted them by name some time ago (I forget exactly why) and kinda never really noticed that they weren't in order by time left. That's why I didn't notice that one game had little time left.
As I said before, it would be nice to be able to set the value for the time left for which the color of the game changes to red. 24 hours would be my choice, other players might prefer other times.
I had a game time out yesterday, despite being on line. I know the games show up in red when there is less than an hour to go, but I'd like to see this be user definable. I'd like my games with 24 hours or less to be red. I'm not here every hour. ;-)
On the main game page, next to each of my BKRs in the "Your best BKR" s******, I'd like to see that little graph s***** that takes me to the graph of my BKR over time.
I would like to see info on a player's streak in games, maybe even split for overall consecutive wins/losses and also by game type. I would like to see it both in a player's stats in his (or her) profile and in a table of the top streaks for each game. As a serious pente player, I have had streaks of 40+ wins and I know of another player who topped 50 consecutive wins at another site. It would be fun to see more of that of information.
