It's because the site has stayed up while I have faster internet connection. I have always had 1-4 days a week that I have moved many moves... that is if I can stay away from the white screens and such. (for example, today is a bad day - I will not get as many moves in today - but if the site stays healty tomorrow, it may be a good day for me to make many moves.)

(*edit: when I say bad day - I mean not able to make many moves, not that the site is bad today)

Any rook is free to start any tournaments - I know Bry also has "Mini backgammon" tournaments he does - they usually start fast (but have a longer time limit)

Caissus - Feel free to start any tournament you think there needs to be - I will probable not do any "Fast Start" for some of the games you mentioned (antichess, hordechess) basicly because I don't think there is enough people who like it.

But one of the ways I see is try some (Like I have just recently with Reversi, Halma, etc....) - just to see if anyone would be interested.

What I have found (and will keep on doing) is backgammon (which I can sometimes start up to 2-3 a day!) is the most popular. Also Nack, Race, and Crowded gammon is also pretty popular. Spider Line 4, Battleboats & Five in Line also usually fills up within a day or two.

-----------

But again, feel free to create any type of tournament you like. I don't sign up for my own currently because I'm tring to get my total game count down - but I know many others like the tournaments, so I try to keep them going for everyone else!

... if they did not like it, they would stop signing up, and then i would stop creating them! :-)

My suggestion for a site "all games" tournament would be so hopefully more people would join it - and then there would not be a need for other "all games" tournaments - since they normally don't get as many users. If there was a "MAIN" Site tournament - lets say once a month, I believe it would get many sign ups, which in turn make the tournament beter.

And like harley said - A lot of people like the "Fast start" tournament - I'll be the first to admit I have a lot up right now - that is because I like to try them with different game types to see what kind of response I get..... so those will disapear soon, and you probable will not see those game types again. :-)

Fencer - because a lot of the games I make are "Fast Start" games, meaning once 5 players sign up, I will start it - if it has many type of games, it would not longer be a fast starting tournament.

I have a lot of tournaments right now because I was just trying a few different games - I will try to keep my tournament's down.

Also, any plans for a regular "all games" tournaments. I would love to see 1 "main" tournament (site created / Fencer created) that started every month or so.

Only about 2,000 active players

See, 2.9% of the active users signed up - better then 0.6% if you use the number of 9,000! :-)

Back by popular demand

ALL games for dummies (under 1500 & unrated)

This is the best place to try out games which you may not normally play, or play when you know the "experts" are not going to beat you after 4 moves!

NOTE: If anyone has a rating WAY over 1500 by the time the tournament starts, I will remove them. PLEASE DO NOT join if you are really good at a game, there are plenty of other tournaments set up just for you!

Good Luck to all!

Congrats to RAHVIN666 for winning the Spider Line4 CHAMPIONSHIP Invitational (1-10) - which the winners of the #1-10 of the "Fast Start" tournaments competed!

(There are still a few games to finish in the tournament, but RAHVIN666 has already placed himself as the winner. Congrats!)

Yea I did ask it before, but it got "buried" without an answer - and the pawn in question has been watching this board for an answer. The pawn has already found 5 free slots, but just in case trying to find 2 more if needed.

So I figured I would repost it in case Fencer missed the first post. :-)

Ämne: Question for Fencer
I think I know the answer, but I just want to confirm it.

I have a tournament which is one game per 2 players - Max of 8 players per section.

The computer only checks to see if the pawn has 5 game slots open, correct?

So if a pawn has 15 current games, the computer will let him in even if it might give him 22 total games, correct?

I just want to double check so I don't accedently mess up a pawn which wants to be in my tournament, but needs to finish a couple of current games first.

Thanks!

I believe it is something on Fencer's to-do-list for after version 2 is done (or possible for version 2) - which is to check to see if the tournament is complete enough to go ahead and start next round.

Ämne: Re: LongJohn's suggestion
I agree that anyone who would use that tactic is not nice - which is why I called them the "bad person". But if a new rules leaves loop holes like that, it is only a matter of time until someone takes advantage of them. And it would be a rare thing, but it would happen sooner or later.

You still don't see how 23+23+23.... would sooner or later add up over 50, or 100 or whatever the main time limit would be set as?

Which part do you not understand - I'll try to help.

The suggestion - a timer that runs for every minute you do not play.

The good person - Plays every day, usually the same time, take for example 7pm to 8pm and playes all their games.

The bad person - knows this persons schedule, waits until 8:01 after they sign out and plays their game.

Timer starts to run on "good player" - 23 hours taken from clock. Good player makes his daily move at 7pm the next day.

Bad player - Waits until 8:01 until the good player signs out and plays the game again. Bad player only had 1 hour taken off the time.

Yet again, the good player is off for anouther 23 hours (making the total of 46 hours off the main clock)

(Well keep doing this example for awhile, and the time will add up quickly - and if there is a limit of lets say 50 total hours, well after 2 1/2 days, the game would end.)

A suggestion I made to hopefully make it so the good person to not time out is to have a 24 hour grace period before the timer starts to run.

Does that help.

Ämne: Re: LongJohn's suggestion
LJ's suggestion is to have a game time limit - which as I understand it, for each minute you do not make a move, it takes away a minute.

So if you are given lets say 50 hours to make all your moves in a game, I was just showing how someone could watch and easly take away 23 hours from someone else, which would cause them to lose the game. (which is why the suggestion of a 24 hour grace before the main game timer starts).

And your are exactly right - if the tournament is set up, you probable do not want the person who moves daily to time out - which is what I was pointing out could happen! :-)

8. februari 2004, 20:11:06
coan.net
... or possible make it so the "total game" timer does not start to run until 24 hours past the last move - so the first 24 hours from the last move is a "free" time that would not hurt anyone.

Ämne: LongJohn's suggestion
It's an interesting suggestion which may work, but I do see where it could be used in the wrong way.

Rule #2. Maximum time for total games.

Well there are some people who sign in every day, and maybe play for an hour. Well if I wanted to be stinky, I could figure out that they are on from 7pm-8pm every day - and wait until 8:01 to make my move where they would have 23 hours taken off their timer before they were to move again. After doing this for a week, it could look like they move slow even though they play their games every day. (Again, just an extreme example of how that rule could be used wrongly.)

7. februari 2004, 17:48:41

Ämne: time limits
A suggestion could be to have a different type of games - a "super fast" game where the time limit is the "true" time limit with no weekends or vacations.

If people have problems with the way I play games, I'll be happy to explain my situation to everyone. Unlike what IMupChucKing says, I do not start every tournament I see - I have actually started very few tournaments lately because of the number of games I have.

But since there are a couple who seem to be worried about my game playing, I will try to explain to you. I use to have very fast internet connection every day which allowed me to have many games. When I found out I was not going to have fast internet connection anymore, I played many games and got my games down to around 150 or so. Then I lost my fast connection, and then the site crashed and brought back my 350+ games. So now I'm stuck with have a couple of window open - I make a move in one window and while I wait for that to "process", in the other window I check out the message boards. And as a side note, I now have fast internet access about once a week - but for the past 2 times I did was the exact times this site was down.

Sorry that this bothers some people - When people ask nicely, I have always tried to hurry and play their games. It is not a situation that I like being in, I wish I had the time and connection to play the games I use to be able to, but I don't. Sorry

Well similar to that Backoff - after the big "crash", so players just resigned many of their games - and now have under 1000 BKR. They are good players, and now if you lose against them, you will lose a lot of BKR points since they are rated so low (but still good players)

The system will still let the person play.

But the tournament creator does have all rights to remove any player they do not think (or want) from their tournament.

So for example sometimes I will have "dummy" tournaments for players rated below 1500. At the time the tournament starts, I remove anyone that has a lot higher rating then 1500. (if they have let say 1508 or something close I usually let them stay - but it is up to each tournament creator.)

When a player who starts out unrated, but before the tournament starts - goes OVER the rating limit, they will STAY in the tournament by default.

Now what I do when I run (for example 1500 & under) tournaments, before the tournament actually starts, as tournament creator - I go and remove anyone who is then over the limit that was setup (unless it's not by much - like BKR 1505, etc...) but it is up to the tournament creator if they want them to stay or not.

It's not really the new/old links - it has to do with if you use the www. before Brainking.com or not.

So to have a link work for EVERYONE who uses BrainKing, it should look something like this (without the ".":

<.A HREF="/game/ShowFellowship?fid=105">

So no matter if a person is using http://brainking.com, or http://www.brainking.com, or even http://new.brainking.com - it will work (And as a note, as of right now there is no difference between the "new", "www", or "blank")

(As a second side note - I believe Fencer is going to have this fixed in the new version of BrainKing which should be comming in the next few months!

NoMeansNo: What is suppose to happen is the tournament creator is suppose to start the next round. (And a tournament creator is just another user on this site). So because this ONE other user who did not start the next round of the tournament after 2 weeks, instead of just asking for it to start you start to blame the whole site!

At time like this, I guess I would have to agree with what rod said.

17. december 2003, 07:07:26

I'm not sure I'm understing everything.

1st - In THIS TOURNAMENT, before all the games were finished, you asked in here about the next round - where you were told that all the games had to be finished in each section before the round 2 starts.

2nd) Looks like the last game in round 1 was complete at the end of November (couple of weeks) - and since you mentioned it on this board before this, you expected Fencer or whoever to be watching VERY closly for the last game to finish so the 2nd round can start?

3rd) The second round is ready to start - This has to be done by either the tournament creator or Fencer (Fencer does it when the tournament creator does not). Hopefully when Fencer signs on, he will see the messages on here and start the 2nd round (Since now the games ARE finished and the 2nd round CAN start)

4th) Your friendly game had nothing to do with the tournament games.

5th) There will be 3 players in round 2 of the tournament which I'm sure will start tomorrow since you have now brought it to the attention of the site owners (A nice message asking is prefered, but whatever)

NOTE: All games in round 1 NEEDS to be finished before the round 2 starts. Fencer does not have time to keep an eye out on all tournaments that round 2 does not start - it is usually something for the tournament creator to do, the down side is sometimes the creator forgets to start round 2, or leaves the site. In that case, Fencer is always happy to start the 2nd round for people AS LONG as he is told about it AND AS LONG as all the games are complete in the first section.

I hope this helps - but if you are leaving anyway, good luck and have fun!

I sent zuggie a personal message, but I'll share in here also.

When I first joined this site, I would have 5-6 different windows up, each with a different type of game (Backgammon, nackgammon, etc...) - And I seen where the dice images loaded wrong all the time. (Since all the game games looked at the same parameter or something - Fencer could explain). The solution I found that works is to only have 1 gammon game up at a time - and since then I have not see the dice "change" on me at all.

I know at one time Fencer said he could fix the problem, but I'm not sure if he ever did....

12. november 2003, 19:26:06
coan.net
Speaking for myself (a not very good Gothic Chess Player), I would not pay a fee to enter the tournament (Basicly because I stick at the game, and have no way of winning anything). But if it was with no entrance fee, I would probable join just for the very slim chance I might actually make some good moves. (And I believe many others feel the same way I do)

So the question would be if you would want a lot of players in your tournament (no entrance fee), or less players in your tournamanet (with entrance fee)

Or as mentioned once before, maybe the player will need to be a paying member of BrainKing to play in the tournament (which will get a few more players in your tournament, plus help out BrainKing)

--------
Prizes - If there were more prizes, that might also get more people to join. Lets say the entrance fee is $50, maybe some of the "lower" prizes could be cheaper "Gothic Chess" shirts, coffee mugs, etc... Even if a player can win something, it's a good thing (even if it is not worth the same as the cost to enter the tournament).

Yea, i've already sent a message to Fencer about the tournament that is messed up. I've seen it happen before, and usually Fencer can fix it pretty quickly.

The only problem that I seen was there were about 15-20 pawns that were removed from the tournament because they did not have enough space (which was only suppose to be 5 free spaces needed), but since some sections produced many many games (10,15+), a lot of paws got kicked out - which I'm not sure if Fencer can put them back or not - have to wait until Fencer is back on-line! :-)

sometimes the "+XX" games gets stuck. (I had a +7 for about 2 weeks)

Once fencer reads the message, hopefully he will be able to fix that part up. (The +XX games actually count the tournaments which have "closed for signup" and waiting for the creator to start) .... and not the number of games you actually are signed up for.

Anyway, Fencer is on now - hopefully he will read this and fix it for you - or possible send Fencer a nice message and ask him to fix it.
