txaggie: Can someone explain to me the great attraction of cloak mode? Are there really that many people who are concerned about other people knowing what page they are viewing?
I use cloak mode. It's not that I'm concerned about others knowing what page I last viewed, but it's people drawing conclusions from that.
txaggie: I find it particularly annoying when I am go to "Online opponents" and cannot tell if my opponents are actively playing me or not. Should I hang around while they make a move, or is it time to log off? I don't know!
Let me tell you something. If I am actively playing you, you're not likely to deduce that from whatever last page I was viewing either. If I'm here playing, I usually am making moves in 20 to 60 games, of which several, sometimes over a dozens, games my opponents are active as well, so there are a lot of games where I make a number of moves in a short time. So, just because I'm viewing game X (which isn't a game I'm playing with you) at a certain point in time, doesn't mean I won't make a move against you within a minute. And while I'm actively playing an opponent, I also may look at a new post on a board.
It's a fallacy you can determine who's actively playing you based on "last page viewed". If I'm actively playing you - you'll notice from your list of games where you have to make a move. You don't need cloak mode for that.
I don't use the cloak mode myself. One of my opponents and I banged out 15 moves in each of two games when we saw each other online yesterday. I guess as long as they are willing to play, they will "decloak" and let you see them.
I scrutinize every game played by my opponents I am facing for the first time before I ever make a move. I look for weaknesses and try to exploit them. So, for me, cloaking might be a good thing...
...then I started thinking "hmmm...maybe they will freak out if they see me pouring over game after game..."
EdTrice: I don't care about seeing everything they are doing. I just think it would be nice to know if they are actively playing against me, that's all.
Can someone explain to me the great attraction of cloak mode? Are there really that many people who are concerned about other people knowing what page they are viewing?
It is certainly your right to hide your movements if you wish, since Fencer has made this available, but I would like to see one thing about it changed. I find it particularly annoying when I am go to "Online opponents" and cannot tell if my opponents are actively playing me or not. Should I hang around while they make a move, or is it time to log off? I don't know!
So the change I would like to see is let them remain cloaked for everything they do, except if they are viewing of moving in a game against me, then show that to me. Would that be a difficult change? Probably not.
It's common in the Backgammon world to use a different rating system to that designed for the Chess world - one that takes into account the match length as well as the difference in ratings between the two players. I've just won a 5-point match and seen myself credited with a single win ...
It's also a much simpler formula, lol - and can't cause a player to lose points for winning!
If you decide that this is an item worth following, among the thousands demanding your attention ;-), and you'd like some commented javascript for calculating backgammon ratings I'd be more than pleased to email it to you.
I noticed a Download Notation feature on one of the games. It would be very handy to have that for Backgammon too. A good file format is the .mat format (defined for the Jellyfish program but recognised by many others).
I've been following some games by other players and find it disconcerting that the viewpoint changes on each move. While plenty of watchers may like this change of perspective, I find, when looking for anticipated moves and patterns on the board, that I have to shift it all around in my head before my mental map matches the board.
It would be great if one of the User Preferences could be to maintain a static viewpoint when watching a game, and have a Rotate-Board (or Swap Players or some such) button on the page to show the alternate view. (Once swapped the viewpoint would thereafter be from that player's perspective.)
I don't know whether it's been asked for but I'd like to add my vote for a consistent dice order, preferably highest first. Consistency pays off by allowing the player to automatically play the highest dice without having to stop and think whether the dice need to be switched first. It allows the lowest dice to be played knowing that the dice *do* need to be swapped first.
I don't see any advantage in having the dice unordered. On the contrary, being used to highest-dice-first, I find that in every game, I play a few moves which have to be undone, the dice swapped and the move played again. This is especially the case when bearing off. Normally a no-brain operation, there is currently the need for a pause each roll to ensure that a high-placed man isn't being merely moved along rather than off the board.
baudrillard: the moving of the screen is causes by a slow loading of the page (either because a connection is slow, or because BrainKing is very busy) .. it will first load one part, then load the next part and shift the rest of the screen, etc.
i dont know why the html code is showing .. you can best post that question on the computer board
In someone's new games list don't appear invitations with BKR limits outside his own BKR.
Is it possible that in a similar way we can define day-per-move limits so that invitations outside this limits don't appear in our lists? Want give a limit of maximum 10 days per move, coz i have
some times overread this item and now too much blocked slots by super slow opponents of whom each needs 19 - 20 days per move...
The way I understood it from Fencer, there will be Globals for each language. For instance, Londo only handles the Czech boards. If someone asked for assistnace on a German board, I would certainly be willing to assist, but I would also check with a German moderator.
Subjekt: new languages - moderators / global moderators
Zmenené užívateľom votacommunista (28. mája 2005, 21:11:09)
Every language must have his own mod / global mod system, strictly divorced.
Language 1: Global Mods | Mods
Language 2: Global Mods | Mods
...
Language n: Global Mods | Mods
Note: This includes that posting / reading abilities can changed for a user only within the language's boards.
And it should be clear, that ALL actions of moderators / global moderators should be logged.
NOTE: We are discussing in our german speaking community about the following: If in "our" language global mods are needed, we will set all mods to global mods. That means responsibility together.
In fact I think Filip will change the mod system in some way. This is obviously for me - if we continue in this way global mods from other languages will come into other languages, using babbelfisch to translate and then ... NO, THANKS!
play battleships, but something like shooting pool...... it remains your turn as long as you keep hitting a target.... just wanted to place a little input... just might sound as if I knew what I was talking about......
Hello folks! I'm not sure who to ask, but I may be having some glitches with my javascript and wondered if anyone could advise? Sometimes, when I hit the move button, it goes to the HTML coding page instead! Also, the board tends to dive from one side of the screen to the other (LOL) .... bit like ping pong, but you don't have that (yet) do you? I'm sure it is something I need to adjust on my computer so thanks in advance.
Cheers!
AbigailII: Oh... I like that game (Proximity) - I will have to play some more when I get some more time. (Plus would be great here - maybe a smaller board version, plus the regular board version.)
i am in a pente fellowship which uses both the english as well as the czech board (from before the change)
i see a red number when something new is posted on the english fellowship board ... but i dont see anything when a new message is posted on the czech board
could it be made like the fellowships show as they do right now .. but when there is a new message on a board then that specific board is shown expanded under the fellowship in the list ... a bit like fencer did it at first when he changed it last week :)
This is a cool feature. But I think some minor changes need to happen. In the list of fellowships on the main page, only new messages in the "Main" board trigger the little red number that you can click on. To see new messages for all boards in a fellowship, I have to add them all to my favorites. I think most people are like me and belong to many fellowships. That could be a LOT of favourite boards.
How about only listing the fellowship boards in the Favourite boards List, if there are new messages.
AbigailII: No, the current language has a black border (or at least dark grey). I'm using portuguese and can still see a border on the white part of the czeck flag...
anyway, this is just a detail. Probably the only ones that should be upset by it are the slovaks(?) and they see the black border anyway ;)
pauloaguia: Oh and while I'm at it, maybe the slovakian flag at the top right of the page could use with a grey border line like the chzeck one does.
The grey border isn't a feature of the Czeck flag. The grey border indicates the language you are currently using. Click on the Slovak flag, and it'll get a grey border.
pauloaguia: We are building up the German Boards. Fencer created at first only one general (http://brainking.com/game/Board?bc=79) because we german speaking people want to discuss which boards to make and what for a policy. In my opinion (and we are discussing it) the policies should be more strictly used.
Would it be possible to view multiple languages at once without seeing them all?
Right now I want to see the portuguese and the english DB's. When they come along I'll probably want to check out the french and italian ones as well... But I don't care about the german or the slovakian ones (because I know I won't understand them).
I was thinking of something on the lines of choosing my favourite languages (maybe in settings?) and then an option to see all foruns from my favourite languages... or replacing the combobox that there is now with a bunch of checkboxes near each flag or something?
Oh and while I'm at it, maybe the slovakian flag at the top right of the page could use with a grey border line like the chzeck one does... otherwise it fades against the background and seems smaller than the others
.. of course bug fixes should have higher priority than the rest. Very annoying bug when removing pieces from board setup. Just try to setup a board with slower connection, often one needs to reload missing pictures also, then this problem with removing more pieces than the one selected, makes the process very long and annoying. It's so hard to find the cause of this bug? There are more games influenced by this, all that need initial setup I believe. Then some other missing things in games with setup prior to actual game:
1) it would be useful to save together positions for different variants on same boards (like espionage variants, crazy/screen chess, battleboats variants)
2) it should be possible to rewind to initial position, not only to move 1
Sometimes when you move backward, you cannot make a move after going back forward without reentering the game. I experienced even a problem placing first piece, random placement and clear board helped I think.
Chess games: reversed notation when setting up black's position, always from white's sight.
Sure some of these are in bug reports, I just grouped more things about this group of games.
