someone recommended to me not long ago, can't remember the author or title, but it is definately newer, I believe it's about abuse of some sort or another, the author is definately a woman, and it has an odd sort of title....Ring a bell with anyone? I'm stumped...

Also, just so you know, Stephen King and comedic author Dave Barry are very good friends, Dave talks about King all throughout his non-fiction books and they are in a band together (I'm racking my brain trying to remember the name of the group, it'll come to me and I'll get back)

ajtgirl: Yes, yes, yes...blew me away...I've always told my elder son he should read "The Stand" someday when he found the time (he doesn't have much) & when he bought it home from the library last month, to my surprize it was different! The first edition published in 1978 was edited by Stephen King due to the publishers insistence that it was too long, so it was cut some 500 pages (he had the choice to do it himself or let the publisher do it, so he did, thank goodness)...The "complete and uncut edition" was done in 1991 & even tho I'm only a quarter of the way into it, it's different, really different, much more indepth, the way King intended it to be from the get-go, I guess.....I'm in my glory right now, if I could not go to work I'd read it from start to finish.....I also LOVE Stephen King, a very, very talented writer

I have read everything Stephen King has ever written
Not that I can quote from them or remember every single story
But I love his writings
First time I read The Stand I had just moved to NYC and the scene in the tunnel under the river was frightfully real to me.
I could really visualize it having been in those places.
Every book he writes is special to me...He is one person I would love to sit down and have a talk with
Are you telling me that the first edition of  The Stand was edited and I did not read the real thing?

Hi - believe it or not, my first time stopping by, even tho I'm an avid reader. For those of you who read the original Stephen King novel "The Stand" way back when...Have any of you read the "uncut" version done in the 1990's? I'm in the midst of it now and loving the story all over again

amandalove: They are called car boot sales here and are held in designated places userally a field or a car park. Garage sales at home are not allowed here.
It depends where it is from on e-bay. I bought a book publised in the USA cheaper in spite of pp and delivered within a week. Here they wanted 4 to 6 weeks delivery time and their cut for ordering.
I enjoy the library sales, there is one tomorrow uptown and I,ll be there lol!
I think Amazon is expensive. There is a site called Play.com which sells nearly everything including books and pp is free here I donno if it would be free in the USA.

I am so delighted that you have fond memories of Charles Dickens' writings.

He was one wordy fellow and with a sharp wit, indeed.

God bless you

For poetry my favourites are Poe and Longfellow and the Latin version of Virgil,s Aneid, we had to learn that by heart at secondary school. I have always believed that all the best literature was written in Latin. Latin is not taught in secondary schools any more, my class was one of the last to do it, I was lucky! But I canna sew to save me life I,m afraid!

I lived in the panhandle, strictly agricultural and livestock
The parents in our school district, who elected the school board and chose the curiculum
were making future farmers and homemakers in 1974
I learned a lot there but not about reading or the arts
But I can sew an entire wardrobe for a man or a woman!
