Ewe: I'm torn on this one.Humans are humans, but I do support humane practices in the eating of animals, though some may think there are none.
anastasia:I would fill out the form, but I feel I'll probably just get put on their mailing list.Stating it on an online pledge won't change anything if I do it already.
anastasia: That would be noble, some dogs just aren't happy sitting around all day watching Oprah and eating popcorn
I visited with a client on Tuesday,he brings his 13 month old Great Dane to the office a few days a week,I think I've found a new favorite breed,I was nuts about him
Konu: Re: THAT is why there are so many animlas in shelters
anastasia: yep, they are pretty big,Strudel was apricot,we used to part his hair down the middle and dress him in my dads pajamas.I would sleep on his belly like it was my pillow,I grew up with him.Sadly he died from cancer of the spleen, our high priced vet did such a lousy job sewing him up after surgery that his incision was almost hanging open.Sometimes we learn some of our first painful lessons through our "pets"
Konu: Re: THAT is why there are so many animlas in shelters
Ewe: DOH! lol my mistake. If I'm ever in a position to own a large dog agan,it'll be a LAB,they may be our worlds last line of defense against the oncomming toy poodle explosion ;-)
Konu: Re: THAT is why there are so many animlas in shelters
anastasia: Part of the problem with our shnauzer was that we got her when they were they the trendy breed back in the early 70's.I'm sure the demand created some unwise breeding,we loved her just the same, she lived to 13
Konu: Re: THAT is why there are so many animlas in shelters
anastasia: My mistake, after some research I finally understand the term "working line" in regards to dogs as opposed to a cafateria As far back as I can remember our family has always had our best luck with the most undesirable, scrawny weak link of any litter we have had our choice of.The last purebred we bought (other than adopting racing greyhounds) was a miniture shnauzer, and she was so high strung she trembled.
Konu: Re: THAT is why there are so many animlas in shelters
anastasia: Does that apply to the average owner who just wants a companion? Show dogs are judged on a much higher scale I would suspect.I'm an audiophile when it comes to my stereo,I look at other peoples units and wonder how they can accept the inferior quality, but I'm an audiophile, they aren't,so the little things aren't even apparent to their ears
Konu: Re: I'm shocked that the San Fran zoo attack hasn't been discussed
Ewe: I see your point, and years ago zoos deserved the stigma they still have, but conditions have really improved in the past 25 years.Zoos might be the best friend wild animals have in many respects, they have programs that protect those in the wild amongst other things. They also serve to educate, they aren't the best scenario, but they've come a long way
anastasia: I'm not suprised,Toy Poodles would take over the world if they could, they are the shiftiest, hyper, most unpredictable breed I have ever witnessed
Konu: Re: Why Crocodile's Don't Make Good Pets .........
anastasia: I remember seeing Ingrid of PETA take an escaped turkey(from the Butterball factory)to a retreat that sounds similar. The underground exotic animal trade is pretty disgusting............Have you heard what Mike Huckabee's son did to a stray dog?
Konu: Re: Why Crocodile's Don't Make Good Pets .........
srnity: You raise an excellent point. While I can see both sides of the pit bull debate,am I wrong in assuming that dangerous snakes are allowed as pets? I'm not saing the shouldn't be,but I've seen more than a few news reports of dangerous snakes being lost and showing up under a house or something, hypocritical?
Konu: Re: Why Crocodile's Don't Make Good Pets .........
srnity: You are aware that there are a whole bunch of CAAS members who have been waiting for months to jump the first poster who stereotypes crocodiles, don't you?
Konu: Re: Well, why not, we are animals too, yes? And how incredibly amazing, in my opinion :)
srnity: I've tryed that same line on my gf whenever I leave a mess.I just tell her I'm a Slobopocus(known to show contentment by leaving a mess wherever they nest)She bought it for about 5 minutes, can I use you for a credible witness?
anastasia: In my opinion, the best course of action would be to be in the forefront of those bringing the sleazeball owners to justice, that would lend credability to your messege.I disagree with a defensive approach,be on the leading edge of those wanting the riff raff sorted out.The bad guys are the ones who place pit bulls in a position to fail, society just wants safety.
anastasia: I totally understand your point, but we're living in a bottom line society. You could give examples till the cows come home. One photo of a badly maimed child on the front page of the paper trumps the zillions of examples of positive behavior, that's just how society works. Some people ask why we should even risk an attack, thus the variose bans.I can see both sides of this issue
anastasia: If toy poodles had the power of a pit bull we'd all be f'd,but I digress.I don't think anyone thinks ALL pit bulls are a threat, that would be silly. It's a tough issue
anastasia: I think we're straying from the point. My example of two crazed dogs was intended purely to point out that one of the two is much more capable of causing major damage in a scenario,it wasn't a comment on pit bulls specifically any more than it was weiner dogs.............I used to visit a shelter near my old home, there was a one eyed cat who would always act as tour guide cute as a button.I would literally roll around with them for hours.I doubt my credentials compare with yours in regards to what I do for animals on a daily basis,I admire your commitment.I do provide a forum for animal adoption in my job in the communicats field coupled with a webpage showcasing a pet of the month from my local humane society. The first time I felt a small part of finding a stray a home moved me to tears.I think this topic can be discussed without anyone having to flash credentials, don't forget, the people in this conversation all love animals,we just have different views on certain topics
anastasia: It's hard to argue with your line of logic, but you can't ignore certain reaities. The sheer strength of a pitbull puts it in another league than the weiner dog.I don't think weiner dogs or toy poodles have the potential to overpower or kill a humane being. All dogs have a degree of unpredictability, but in the case of the powerful pitbull the potential of major damage inflicted is much higher.Sure, you could mention other large breeds, but labs and many other large breeds have niether the history or predesposition that pit bulls do,it can happen, but it's rare.I think you also have to examin the ownership group of pit bulls, why do they buy them? is it the rep they are attracted to? It sometimes becomes a self fulfilling prophacy.Maybe the answer lies in the creation of stricter licensing for owners of pit bulls and their owners, that could help eliminate the irresponsible owners to a certain degree.I have a question, would you rather be locked in a room with a crazed pit bull or a crazed weiner dog?
anastasia: I think any person of basic intelligence is aware that the fault rests with the owner of the animal.I find this situation similar to the gun issue, guns don't kill unless the trigger is pulled.Sadly in both cases, people with dangerous motives are in posession of and don't safely contain either. If there are dangerously trained pit bulls in neighborhoods populated by children, what is your solution?

Animal: I agree,I think we avoid eating animals we interact with, and I can't remember ever playing with a cow or pig.
Ewe: I admire your restraint,it's more difficult if you actually enjoyed eating meat prior.I can tell you that the taste of mass marketed meat has been on the decline for years.
Konu: Re: For Those Of Us Not Eating Turkey on Thanksgiving
srnity: HAPPY THANKSGIVING, I wonder what percentage of animal lovers are vegans? or,if there is a conflict of interest present if an animal lover also loves meat
Konu: Re: What is everyones opinion of the Ellen DeGeneres puppygate?
Papa: I agree, wielding her audience like a knife in battle was unfortunate.I get the feeling she was only asked to follow proper procedure but felt she was above it all.
wetware: It looks like we are finally narrowing down the problem.Either Lymphoma(we pray not,and I doubt it by recounting her syptoms) or Irrittable bowel syndrome. The biopsy is very expensive but thankfully our insurance will cover it.
