Foxy and others. Check out Neem oil. It stinks and most bugs that eat leaves that are sprayed with it will die in time. It cuts off the digestive system or something in bugs. BUT it is completely harmless to birds, animals or humans. I got it last week for my hedge and it seems to be working. The bugs ate every leaf on my hedge last year so was determined to stop them. It is a natural oil that is from the Asia Neem tree. BOY it stinks tho.. Google it to get more info. All plant stores sell it.
CindyInTN: Mcorowaved for what? the birds to eat or??
I planted my tomatoes, sunflowers, hollyhocks and chicks and hens saturday indoor. WOW they are shooting up already!
Do you plant yours outside from seed or start em in doors Cin?
Foxy Lady: Heres a question. I was told to add ashes from your fire place to plant soil and soil around your bushes so I got some from my mum. Anyone heard of doing this before and if so how does it help?
I have a bad bug prob with earwigs and slugs so hopefully it will keep em at bay?
Foxy Lady: We have a lot of clay here as well mixed with tons o rock! I had to do that too, dig out where I want to plant to put in proper topsoil and it sure makes a difference. I also lime twice a year which helps too!
Im going to start my tomatos and sunflowers indoors this year as the growing season is so short that my sunflowers had just barely bloomed last year an then it frosted. Cant wait!
Foxy Lady: I'm as anxious as you are! I have my seeds ready and going to plant some indoors this weekend but it is far too early for us to think of planting, sighhhhh... It was such a longggg winter this year that I just want to get out in the yard!
Foxy I get where you are coming from I do. I guess I was meaning more so for the folks who dont want the squirrels eating their bird seed put out for birds. Thats the part that i dont get.. That site CW listed has some great advice thats safe and non toxic for asking critters to move on else where
CW57: I guess I am just a lover of all creatures. I cant see why ppl want to rid themselves of squirrels. People feed birds but want to starve out the squirrels. I dont think I will ever under stand that type of thinking. If ppl wanna starve one WHY not all? Im not trying to start something. I just dont get how ppl can like only certain creatures. When I see squirrel baffles on bird feeders I shake my head. Its ok to feed birds but not squirrels? ok sorry my rant for the day..
Moth balls really work on keeping spiders and wasps away? Gotta try that then. My windows and doors are always covered in huge spider webs. DOnt mind spiders just tired of them taking up all the window an door space
Foxy Lady: Your right Foxy. SO many people think its cute to feed the birds in spring to watch them chirp by the windows but RIGHT now they need food. I feed the many, many diff types of birds in my neighbourhood. Peanuts for the jay and even squirrels. Seeds for the little ones. Even meat and eggs for the crows and seagulls. All birds are equal in my books.
When is the best time to put tulip bulbs in? I live on the east coast of Canada and last year I put them in late Sept and they started to sprout after Hurricane Juan hit! Not usually that warm here in Oct!
