Just an observation. does anyone else think that playing 5 games at the same time is a bit much for a beginners tourney? This may be a bit much for any newbie. I thought that we were going to do a single elimination or a 3 person section. We don't want to discourage anyone so early.
right now i'm playing a non rated game with a player as a teaching tool. i am unable to get the BK rating thing to work when i post a game. I try to set parameters but it never works and anyone joins. even if i set the rating to no one over 1500 can challenge me, it don't work.
will there be a list of trainers... that would be nice to list the trainers and assign a mentor to each newbie that registers. So I think that all the current SL members should Mentor a newbie. In my new job I have a Mentor who helps me through any problems that may occur or questions that i may have. That is a great idea Mark.
How often will we use a poll? We obviously cannot use a poll every time we cannot decide on choosing a game type. This process will become very narrow minded and become extremely Boring after awhile. We cannot be a league of only two variants. Regardless of our feelings of certain variants. If we expect to improve our games we must become strong in all aspects of our game. It sis obvious that 90% of us prefer the open ( non-volcano) variants, but we cannot neglect the volcano versions either. the other option is asking for a new variant. Which I feel that could be implemented very quickly on this site. A variant that we all can agree upon.
Yes excellent idea! The espionage.sabotage games came in a specific order on IYT. It grew with us and it should grow here the same way. The only variant that should not be touched is the plain original version due to time constraints. Other than that the small espionage is a much faster version that the IYT version due to random volcanoes. You only become a great player by making your weaknesses your strength.
if we expect to recruit new blood here I suggest that we have a variety of game types i know that some of us only like to play certain variations but if we want to recruit new player we will have to suck it up and play all versions to at least get them hooked.
No i never use saved setups. What i mean is that if for example i have my base in the right corner of a game that I'm losing badly. instead of just resigning immediately I'll wait or slow down until other games in that section are close to ending. so that an opponent that im in a closer game with doesn't logically deduce where i may have set my base in that game in comparison to the game i just lost!
I too also use set ups when I face specific players. A taylor made Setup for just that game and opponent. In those cases i save them setups. and ill name them after that opponent.
Do not forget that slowing down while losing has its strategic needs as to not reveal your set ups to the rest of the players in your bracket. So that they can get a feel for your set ups in that particular tourney.
As of this post we have 26 players. right now it seems as if there will be around 6 sections of 4+ players which is very nice. unless we get 4 more players (30).
ok... umm this is going to be one of the most competitive tournaments of all time! I'm really pumped but how does an unseeded player with 1 game played get a #1 seed hmmm! Whats the difference i'm psyched to play!
were going to be in a lot of games in this one from what i can see. we will have to play 4players at once. Each section is very large! i prefer single elimination.
here is where the flaw is. lets say i get lucky and get a 2500 rating to start, playing against average players. at this point there is no motivation to playing high ranked players ever again! and thus i will only play new players or low ranked players that have very little chance of winning. also in chess you are placed in sections with other similarly ranked players where you cannot avoid them. and eventually you will lose. these are open games not tourneys. in tourney play the rankings work perfectly but when you can pick and choose your opps they fail. ive been trying to face players and usually they turn down the game invitation in fear of losing ranking points.
if you did not know Nuno was one of the ORIGINAL players at IYT. he predated myself and tony wilder! He was the Cy Young or Ty Cobb of sabotage. ( to use a baseball analogy or Jose Raul Capablanca to use a chess anaolgy!
i see it all the time..unfortunately. for me 3-5 days between moves is much to long. just look at the black rook prize tourney i started it will be running for 2 years in december! this is with a 5 day time limit.
generally we used to accommodate people by changing the time limit mid way through the tourney we would up it from 3 days to 7 days but when they returned we would change the time frame back to 3 days.
here is the dangerous part with vacations. many members get a lot of vacation time and set it on auto vacation they can literally be away from the game for 2 -3 weeks without a move and not time out!
this is essentially the main page for any espionage discussion. the page i created is just a place where this hardcore people i wold go. but this best for everyone. as for time controls we will need to tweak the time controls to be advantageous to everyone. b/c as of now people move much to slow for most of us former iyt members. Fencer is also much more open to suggestions and opinions than iyt ever was. he also listens to game creation suggestions and follows through with them. I became a life time member b/c of his stand up personality! Perhaps we can find a way of getting people out of the failed tournies.
generally i don't resign unless it is hopeless. Its is doubtful that i will ever lose a game where a person uses a front line base. Good players will expose this EVERYTIME!
