One-and-a-half-year old Chihuahua dog 'Conan' prays with his owner and chief priest Joei Yoshikuni during a morning pray at the Shuri-Kannondo temple in Okinawa islands, southwestern Japan, Monday, March 24, 2008
A rare wild jaguar seen and photographed in the United States by hunter Warner Glenn is bayed by hounds during a hunting trip at an unknown location in southwestern New Mexico, February 20, 2006. Glenn and other members of his hunting party caught the hounds and led them away after they cornered the jaguar. The male jaguar, which weighed around 200 pounds, left the site at a slow trot unharmed. Jaguars are extremely rare in the United States, and Glenn is believed to be the only person to have encountered and photographed one in the wild. Photograph taken February 20, 2006.

Относно: Re: that's another issue I need clarified, which sex would match best with two female cats?
Ewe: Very helpful,as anastasia mentioned in a prior post, puppies can be unpredictable long term.I should be looking for a dog who has a past living with cats, reassurance too.I also think it wise to give the girls about 3 months in the new place to themselves.

Ewe: I think the "being older" would help, don't you?? Puppies are SOOOO rambuntious while growing up that even not meaning to,they may go after a cat in a way that a cat is unsure of.Again..alot goes back to pray drive, pups just want to chase things that move, ans espeacially when they hit the "teenage years"
Относно: Re: that's another issue I need clarified, which sex would match best with two female cats?
Jim Dandy: Hi, I had two females cats, both were rescues which I had had for years. I decided to have a dog rescue exactly the same as youre thinking of doing now, & had the exact same concerns & worries you have too as my cats were both so happy.
Well a dog came along, hes was a rough collie (like lassie only black & white) I brought him home on trial for a week to see if he would get on with my cats. I thought if it doesnt work I just simply cant have him as I didnt want to upset my cats who had been through alot previously. I desperately hoped all would be well though. Anyway, the first day or so there was alot of hissing and bushy tails from my cats & he was scared of them! He was such a big laid back dog, had been badly neglected & was in a very bad state...it took a few months to get him back in shape. He had previously lived with a cat aswell.
Thankfully they all eventually got on a treat & it was a happy family. My one cat used to snuggle up next to him!
I think the main points that really helped us, that have been mentioned in previous posts, were: 1 He was older & very laid back not boisterous in the house 2 He had lived with a cat before 3 The cats were there first
I have two female dogs and they are as different as night and day. My ShihTzu is a very laid back gentle little lady but has a temper when she doesn't get what she wants as fast as she thinks she should. Then I have a MinPin that is hyper and very possessive. As for getting along with cats, they are not good examples because they have never been around them. They like to chase them and play but would hurt a kitten because they play too rough. Guess they think they are like those squeaky toys I buy them. If I had gotten them and a kitten all as babies, they would have learned to get along together. I think they are like people and get a bit grumpy and hard to get along with as they get older.
Относно: Re: ..as she gets older she is becoming extremely dominate..so much in fact that she is challanging D for the dom statues between the 2 of them
srnity: I have never owned a female dog in my adult life, spayed or otherwise, lol. I DO know tho that just because a dog shows certain things as a pup, does not mean they develope into adulthood with the same traites. The very first time Niki was introduced to Damien, she licked his mouth first thing...I thought..OH GOODIE!!!! she IS a submissive type!! well, let me tell you that Lil Miss Niki is NOT that way anymore, lol!! She is in her "teenage years" right now (she is 8 months old) and I think just like any teen, they want to test the limits with the family....I know she is testing them with me right now..she is going through her I THINK I hear my Mom calling for me but I will run the other way and keep playing anyways stage, lol.Oh curse the day that Damien hit that phase!! They both bring me such great joy tho!!
Niki also does this new thing, she bounces everywhere that she goes...like tigger, lol!! She doesn't walk, not run,not even that famous GSD trot..she bounces!! TO CUTE!!!

srnity: I work with someone who is a pug nut,she has 3.I think it's a breed you either love or.......I frankly an not fond of the constant snout licking of both bull dogs and pugs, almost like they have a never ending cold LOL
Относно: that's another issue I need clarified, which sex would match best with two female cats?
Jim Dandy: Wow, I'm definately out on a limb on that one While I'm thinking of it, I know someone who has a male "Pug" and cats too and they get along just peachy ( I think the cats were there first, maybe that's the trick to harmony, and the pug is a total sweetheart, I don't think he's got a mean bone in his body)
Относно: Re: Yes,smaller males sometimes seem to have a chip on their shoulders regarding size, but we compensate with big cars
Jim Dandy: You know where I live there are many, many women with BIG cars (trucks really) & they say it compensates for their aggressive nature Oh, and beagles are gorgeous, my neighbor has one, I LOVE her bark (howl), it's like she's singing She doesn't care for any other dogs tho (we've got lots living here), she's more a loner. She's not crazy about people either, but maybe it's just a trust issue (she's rescued), and she lets me pet her, she growls softly when I do (lol) but she lets me I think she just likes the attention she gets from the couple that has her the best - very sweet dog, lots of emotion in her

Относно: Re: ..as she gets older she is becoming extremely dominate..so much in fact that she is challanging D for the dom statues between the 2 of them
anastasia: That must be a fun argument to watch Are spayed females generally more dominant than males in a group canine situation? Wow does mine get snippy with certain male dogs at parks, etc. if they don't give her her "space" sometimes But she's not like that with cats and others, maybe she knows of their ability to put their claws up?
Относно: Re: I need to call on your experience and knowledge
anastasia: Jenn would be fine, but Molly literally goes catatonic outside my place.I think a natural environment is the best scenario.I may submit a few breeds to my guy at the humane society,if they pop up he could contact me
Относно: Re: I need to call on your experience and knowledge
anastasia: My numero uno priority is that they all get along, age is only a factor in regards to my thinking it help both dog and cats grow into eachother(so to speak)I will definitely be adopting from a shelter,I would be hypocritical otherwise, but it has to be the right match,I refuse to return it once it's brought into my home.
srnity:Yes,smaller males sometimes seem to have a chip on their shoulders regarding size, but we compensate with big cars,it's a Feudian thing I think
Относно: Re: I need to call on your experience and knowledge
srnity: yes on everything you said, lol!!! The one thing tho that I REALLY need to point out is the dominance thing that you mentioned, and the fact that Jim says he will be getting a puppy.....the most dominate dog as a pup may well grow up to be a bit more submissive then you would think (that is the case with my Damien) and a pup that was EXTREMELY submissive (that would be my Niki) might well grow up to surprise the crap out of you and BECOME dominate!! D was dominate as a pup, pretty laid back now..and Niki, well I picked her BECAUSE she was very submissive to Damien, which was wonderful because at that time he was still pretty dominate...as she gets older she is becoming extremely dominate..so much in fact that she is challanging D for the dom statues between the 2 of them
Maybe,Jim would consider an older or 1 or 2 years old that maybe had come from a cat family?? not all dogs are strays, alot do have a history.
Относно: Re: I need to call on your experience and knowledge
Jim Dandy: One more thought, if I may - being that the cats were there first should help BIG time. Even my "Duck-Killer" (and everything else) dog was tolerant of a rabbit that I had at the time who was cage-free whenever I was home, they weren't best-buds by far, but I think he knew who was there first
Относно: Re: I need to call on your experience and knowledge
Jim Dandy: I SO agree with Anastasia, that's one you definately need to research My shelter-dog LOVES animals, all animals, and people, all people (but she eats bees-lol). But she's also no puppy & was truly desperate for a "home". The shelter that she was at let me take her around on a couple occasions to "meet and greet" because I had an elderly uncaged ferret at home and wanted to make sure she'd be nice to him, and she was wonderful, he died a very content old ferret. But I also had a shelter-dog for many, many years who hunted anything & everything he could. I'd stay clear of any breed of hunting/tracking/or incredibly dominant dogs. From my experience, some small dogs are nastier than the HUGE ones (makes up for their lack of size?) Also, I really hope that your cats still have their claws, yes? That is a cat's defense, especially when it comes to a dog's teeth - I think that's what makes a dog think twice & what chance does a cat have without them with an angry dog in front of them, no matter what size? Just my opinion
Относно: Re: I need to call on your experience and knowledge
anastasia: I did a little googling,my first choice would be a beagle, but the howling might drive my even more nuts than I already am Both my girls have claws,so that is a worry, but if it's a puppy they hopefully won't be intimidated
Относно: Re: I need to call on your experience and knowledge
Jim Dandy: I would personally google that one.(I'm a google girl, lol) Or if you have a specific breed in mind, research that one.My Mom's Peakinease LOVED cats. When I brought my kitten over to introduce them, the tried to mother hen him.I would think you would want to stay away from breeds like terriors as the cats might bring out their prey drive easily. Also talk to the people at the shelter..thats what they are there for :)
Относно: I need to call on your experience and knowledge
I may be moving to a home located on a street with many areas for a dog to enjoy.I previosly was against adopting a dog due to already having two cats, they have sqautters rights, and I didn't want to have a dog couped up in an apt.I need some advice in regards to what dog breeds tend to get along well with cats,it will be a puppy, and it must be a smaller breed.I refuse to have the dog diminish my girls enjoyment of their home, hopefully I can find a breed that will co-exist and compliment our family.
Ewe: I'm torn on this one.Humans are humans, but I do support humane practices in the eating of animals, though some may think there are none.
anastasia:I would fill out the form, but I feel I'll probably just get put on their mailing list.Stating it on an online pledge won't change anything if I do it already.
Rose: So very true!! If everyone would take the time to do SOMETHING...even if it seems small to you,it could make a world of difference for some animal...like sign a petition...have some old towels that you were going to throw away? Donate them to a shelter. At a garage sale and see some dog toys or brushes? Buy them and donate them.Little things do add up!!
anastasia: Absolutely! I've read articles and seen images that just make me ill. How can humans be so cruel I wonder? I guess Im just glad every one isnt like that and there are groups that are trying to stop animals abuse all over the world! We can all do our part by supporting these groups, support the organizations that want to stop cruelty to animals.
Rose: and to think of the animals that are kept in cages their entire lives...how sick and how unbelieveably sad!! Everything that they are capible of doing and their they sit, having expieriments ran on them,or living in puppy mills, just sick.
wetware: I believe they have known for years about dogs capabilities. I recall reading a Stephen King novel in the early 80s (Talisman) A dog character could smell death on an old man in the story (the guy was riddled with cancer) Unreal how intelligent not only dogs but dolphins and other animals are when you think about it!
It's fascinating stuff, and not too surprising when you consider their abilities to detect some chemicals in parts per millions quantities. Early results suggest their detecting abilities not only for melanomas (skin), but also for bladder cancers (urine), and possibly lung cancers (breath).
anastasia: I actually just read something about dogs sniffing people with cancer and here is what it said: something in the cancer cells emit a scent that dogs can smell. The woman had asked why her dog had suddenly fixated on a mole on her arm was sniffing licking nipping at it. I can't find the article about it but that blew me away.
Thanks everyone!! She is doing well today..was a bit rough yesterday after I got her home..she wouldn;t eat,she got sick to her lil tummy, she was a bit cranky to Damien, which he couldn't figure for the life of him, lol. He was very gentle with her tho, nuzzled her tummy a bit. When they would go outside, she couldn't run with him..so he had the toy in his mouth, would run around her 2 or 3 times, stop and let her take the toy from him, then he would run around again, lol. This morning he was DESPERATE to get her to chase him,he was play bowing and everything to her,but she still couldn't run to well.By tonight, she is trying to run and keep up with him..she gets half way through the yard and has to stop and sit down....if he runs to close to her tho she will try to bite his head, lol!!
anastasia: Awww, poor Niki I hope she is recouping well & I do believe that everything happens for a reason - there's something very special that she's meant to do & maybe, just maybe, she needs to be young to get started on her way, so that's why now instead of later Dogs have the ability to be SO much to SO many, it would be great if "therapy" was her calling, I wish her (and Damien, of course) ALL the best that a dog's life has to offer
Jim Dandy: I did hear that one!! I saw that story..I can't remeber what channel but it was fairly recently that I saw it,because they put that story along with the story of the dog that can detect cancer in people by sniffing them.
rod03801: Ya know...just when I take her into Petsmart with me and the people ask if they can pet her,I tell them sure..I always show little ones how to meet a doggy for the first time, and Niki just sits right down for them and lets them maul her....same with elderly people....I honeslty have not found a person that she has not warmed up too. It's weird, she is 7 1/2 months old and she still hasn't gotten that famous "aloofness" that most GSD's have..I have ALWAYS said thats she would be good at therapy....maybe I always knew she was here for another reason..other then competing.
Damien is REALLY good with old people....old women to be precises,he will just let them hug him till his peepers look like they will pop,lol...I would never trust him tho as a therpy dog..he is TO aloof with stragers.
I will let Niki lead me into what she is meant to do...she will tell me.I do plan on keeping her in the tracking and obidieance part of Schutzhund tho ;)
anastasia: Having grown up in Nursing Homes (and having worked at a couple), if you go the Pet Therapy route, I hope you will also consider Nursing Homes.
I saw pets brightening up their days MANY times. Sometimes, some Alzheimer's patients who don't respond to anything, responded with JOY at seeing a dog.
anastasia: sorry to hear about Nikis hips. How about getting in touch with some special needs schools, pet petting can be great therapy for kids, so Niki may be great for that?
