Sigh.... I have never questioned a FF update and always installed it when it came around. The latest one, however, I absolutely detest. I don't need all those bells and whistles and I can't find my bookmarks. I looked at their website which is an adventure in frustration land for computer dummies like I am. Can I uninstall the current version and go back to the previous one? I want simplicity back! :(
Gordon Shumway: Thank you Gordon! Have you seen the new all-in-one Dell Inspiron desktop? What do you think about that? I only put the laptop on my lap when I need to write - otherwise it sits on a little table next to my comfy chair and I use the mouse on the chair arm; I can't imagine a more comfortable way to use a computer :) I can't afford 2 computers, I hope to get a good deal on a new one because the one I have keeps crashing. There seems to be something wrong with the inner workings because wiping it clean and starting over didn't help. And anyway, the RAM I have now is truly pitiful.....
I'm hoping to get a computer on sale in the next couple of days - there are many on sale and I was wondering if there is a specific brand I should definitely stay away from? My choices seem to be HP, Dell, perhaps Sony or Toshiba. We don't use our computer extensively, I just really need to have a larger RAM to play games without crashing :O) I now have a laptop which I love because it takes up little space and I hate sitting at a desk. Would a desktop be a better choice in terms of needing to upgrade it eventually? Any input would be greatly appreciated, thank you!
I've heard that Adobe is known to freely share their info with other companies via cookies etc. I believe someone here once mentioned an alternative to Adobe? I don't know how concerned I should be... I just had my little laptop reset so I have to download everything again, thought this might me a good time to investigate the Adobe issue. I know I'll need some kind of flash plug in too. Any input from all you computer experts on Adobe? Thanks!
MadMonkey: Well, more precisely, it was on the page that appears when safe script is updated... :O) My computer is running slow and I know that there are things I've deleted that left leftovers... I was wondering if something like that would help. Thank you for the link, I'll check it out.
MadMonkey: Was it your own birthday? HAPPY BIRTHDAY! :O) Thank you Ian - does Prism also need a lot or RAM? I had decided against Chrome because in addition to the known issues with it, my computer started having hot flashes - lol - the screen would start to flicker and that made me nervous - crashes have been known to occur with chrome....
Binabik: Never mind... :) I love Chrome for BK, but other sites are quite slow and from looking at the "known problem issues" I decided to wait until perhaps they get it ironed out.
I just installed Chrome and for BK I love it, it's fast for me. I tried to import my bookmarks from FF and it doesn't work. I looked on Chrome for help and this is the message: Some users have resolved this issue by editing their registry. Please note: Editing your registry can be potentially dangerous. If you're unfamiliar with the Windows registry, make sure you have the guidance from someone who does." I'm not comfortable trying that, so, can I just copy/paste my bookmarks? Would the copy/paste hold when you switch from FF to Chrome?
coan.net: The only add-ons I use are Fasterfox and Safescript - the latter is now driving me nuts as it's become too complicated... Where do I go to wash the windows? I've used CCCleaner before, is that what you use for registry cleaner? Sorry, I'm mush when it comes to computer ablities.... I don't have a lot of RAM either - sigh...... Thank you all for your input!
Since my computer has been a bit slow, I called AT&T to check the lines, and they found to errors on the line. Then they had me go to speedtest.net and I couldn't find the map they said was there. So then they had me switch from FF to IE, and then I saw the map and ran the speed test. Everything was as it should have been. So, I decided to use IE and see how that was - BK is a lot faster for me now as are other sites. I wonder if I should delete and then re-install FF? Any suggestions?
When I defrag my computer, which I do at least once a week now, this is the message I get at the end:
Findings on C:
Diskeeper has completed a defragmentation run on this volume and there remain 1276 fragmented files and 3508 excess file fragments. (There were 4806 excess file fragments before the defragmentation run, and now there are 27% less.)
The average number of fragments per file is 1.03.
You should schedule Diskeeper to run considerably more often than it has been running to reduce the current fragmentation and maintain a lower level of fragmentation. This volume is moderately fragmented, with 50% of the total volume space available for defragmentation.
The number of excess and fragmented files never go down more than this - could someone tell me what's happening and what I can do?
wetware: Thank you very much, diogenysos and wetware! I'm currently using my son-in-laws computer but as soon as I get back to my own, I'll check out the avast site, it looks good!
diogenysos: Thanks so much! I'll try turning the firewall off and see what happens. I assume that turning it off won't leave me open to disasters? Hmmm, would that leave me without a firewall at all? I'll have to check AVG and see if they have it.
diogenysos: No, it doesn't. I had Zone Alarm before but I didn't like it because it interfered with Ebay. Before that I had Norton and McAfee - none of them caused the computer to crash. After the first crash, I got a Microsoft message that said that the serious error occurred because of an anti-virus program.
I tried the uninstall/reinstall suggestion and it didn't work.... does anyone have any idea what's going on? When I run the scanner, it goes for about 30 to 60 seconds and then the computer crashes....
I wonder if someone could help me please? I downloaded the free version of AVG anti virus - when I run the scanner, my computer crashes.... I have no other anti virus programs, but I don't know if I should disable the Microsoft built-in ones? I have Windows XP.
Nirvana: Thank you! But why would I need that in addition to, say McAfee? And I just went to their website... again why would I need their "deluxe" package if I also have AdAware? And I would assume I can read well enough to take care of my own spam email, etc? Sigh, all this high tech stuff for such a simple brain like mine....
nightmagic: Thank you, I did notice a speed improvement when I first started to use it, but I have a suspicion I didn't complete the process, if that's the right word. I'm tempted to delete it and either start over or go to Opera, which hasn't lost my bookmarks, but which tends to pay overmuch attention to details here on BK...
Hi there, My firefox icon on my desktop changed its title from "firefox" to "vddf" .... what/why is this and should I worry?
The main reason I don't like Firefox is that my bookmarks always disappear... and I do mean always. What causes this and how do I prevent it?
Am I supposed to "personalize" Firefox in any way, not by adding extensions but somewhere on my computer where it differentiates between me and the other 2 users on this computer?
Finally, I'll bake a lovely cake for whomever will come and fix my problems.....
hexkid: Thanks Hexkid, I will check that - but how can I prevent this from happening? I did, fortunately, copy my bookmarks a couple of days ago so I didn't lose as much, but it's still annoying...
Sigh, this is the 4th time I've lost my bookmarks - this has never happened to me with IE and it's not making me a fan of Firefox. Does anyone know what might be causing this?
Thank you BBW! Now, do I install the 2.0 version and it will automatically replace the older one? Or do I install the 2.0 and then delete the first one?
I wish I had as much luck as you all seem to have had.... twice now I've lost my bookmarks - if I want to un-install this version and then load the 2.0, what will happen to my bookmarks then? Should I first save them somewhere? Sorry, I'm not a computer wiz.... :)
