Fencer: Oh, that's because you were born on the continent, in the 20th century. It's an old, archaic notation, with assymmetric notation for white and black moves. It's called descriptive notation, or English notation, as it remained popular in English speaking countries until 30, 40 years ago. See also http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Descriptive_chess_notation
