Resher: Game length achievements regardless of the game just don't make much sense. Many games cannot even be finished after 10 moves (not taking resignments or draw offers into account), while for others it's impossible or unlikely to go beyond 10 moves.
For instance, having to take 10 guesses in Logic is a disgrace, but you won't be able to win a Halma 10x10 game in less than 10 moves.
But even if you make different game length achievements for different games, what to do with resignments? Surely, you don't want to give an achievement just for someone resigning early in the game; OTOH, you don't want people to get pissed at you for resigning a lost game (and they feeling bad for not getting some kind of achievement).
DeaD man WalkiN: Ah, that seems more reasonable. Not sure about the number 10 though. 6 out my 27 games this year have finished in under 10 moves, so I'd suggest a target of 7 or 8 moves as a worthy achievement. My shortest game was a loss in 6 moves, but I'd rather forget that. (Bad loss)
DeaD man WalkiN: I'd say in Hyper Backgammon, finishing a game in 10 moves or less is not that much of an achievement. I've played 29 games of HB, and 8 of those ended in 10 moves or less. So if it's supposed to be in line with the other achievements, the number should be set lower IMO.
Czuch: I presume you are talking about the Madhouse Poll i am running to see how many (if any) Brains people have here, so therefore if they can afford to enter Brain entry Tournaments.
Well after 88 people voted, this is how it stands:
I think Brain Tournaments are fun, as they give you something to aim for (whether you pay an entry or not). I remember when Fencer first started Tournaments here (WOW, that was a while ago lol) he ran a Prize one if i remember rightly, though i can not think if it was a Single player or Team one.
This should really go on Feature Request, but maybe it could get discussed here as it is about BrainKing itself, its structure, features and future
Lets find some more ways to acquire Brains that people can use for Memberships or entry to Tournaments and maybe even in the shop in future when it re-opens.
My first suggestion, is once every couple of months Fencer (or coan.net / Tanien) run a Prize Tournament. Maybe one game from each section. The prize does not have to be huge (50-100 Brains maybe), but it would be good to give those interested a target, and you could get a Achievement for winning one (or more site PRIZE Tournaments).
Anyway, that is my first idea and of course it is all up to Fencer.
I do not know about anyone else, but times are hard right now and going to get worse before they get better.
Would it not be great to play for a small Prize and maybe those who have nothing may get a little something for taking part
DeaD man WalkiN: I don't suppose so in general. For example, all Cheversi games will be won in 8 moves exactly! There might be for some other games though, I suppose?
DeaD man WalkiN: Since BrainKing.info is located somewhere in USA and has no direct connection to BrainKing's database, it would have to be manually updated each time I add new achievements. It's not worth the effort.
Fencer: OK, thxs for the help. I was just hoping to have them all listed on BrainKing.info. So that way a person could see them all and not have to go through everyone of the little list.
DeaD man WalkiN: You can find it at your Profile / Achievements page. Completed achievements are shown with a light background, other ones with a dark background.
Sorry to have to bring up again the old, old subject, but it has to be discussed somewhere, and I see no better board.
I have this opponent who invented a scheme that demotes our friend the Vanda lover to the rank of amateur. here's the system:
Do NOT activate auto vacation.
Have all your games of at least 5 days timeout length. you can have red-dot games, they wont' disturb the scheme.
Now manually set vac days. Say, today is Monday and your weekend days are Saturday and Sunday. You set your vacation days as follows:
NO NO YES YES YES SAT SUN YES YES YES YES YES SAT SUN YES YES YES YES YES SAT SUN YES YES YES YES YES SAT SUN
Etc. Leave a couple of unset days as reserve. All your 5-day games will have a timeout time far in the future.
Now here's the beautiful part. You never use up any vacation day! How? tomorrow is not set. Come tomorrow (Tuesday) you unset Wednesday. Your vacation days now are
DONE NO NO YES YES SAT SUN
Apparently the system permits you to unset a day in the future, and your unset days couter goes up by one. Every week, or so, add 5 dayes so that your future vacation days are always 4 weeks thick, at least.
And, from time to time, whenever the mood strikes you, make a move against someone in a game. Mind, do it slowly, savor the click. You do it so seldom!
The only drawback is that you have to log in daily to do this little maneuver. But you don't have to move in any game if you don't really feel up to it.
Snoopy: its really not that they dont work properly - they just dont work the way we would like them to..... they do what they are designed to do - nothing more....
blocking - prevents somone from contacting you.... no more - no less
public friends - lets the world see who you are willing to admit you are aquainted with - and people can still keep their stalker tendencies hidden on the....
friends list - helps you keep tabs on whomever you feel like.... and you cant do anything about someone elses....
cloak mode - lets everyone know that you dont care what they are doing - and makes it that much more fun for those stalking you to figure out or guess what you are up to.... now thats really just a compliment...
take the blue pill and see the world as it is.... lol
redfrog: so the bottom line is you can put cloak mode on and its useless has theres ways round it and friends and blocked users dosnt work properly either so whats the point in having any of them me wonders..lol
wouldnt it be better then to ask ppl if they wanted to be friends with ppl like we do if they want to be public friends
Snoopy: i agree with why you are saying what your saying - but the point of view you need to help make sense of what is.... is that your friends list is under your direct control - as is someone elses. Your actions will have no impact on someone elses friends list...
if i want the background color of a game board to be purple - then i select that setting - but the background color for my opponents isnt impacted by my settings.... so it is the same with the friends and blocked list.... what i do to my account impacts my lists - if i block someone they cant interact directly with me - but they can still manipulate their own settings.... even if blocking them could take you off their friends list - they could still log in as a guest (like coan said) or even just go to the online user list. The friend list is a matter of ones own personal list.
thats the best way to look at what is..... whether or not its right.....
cloak doesnt really even work - cause you can still tell the person is online - you can watch their games list to see which are moving from their turn or waiting - you can watch the boards link to see where they are posting... its really impossible to be hidden from a user - its just possible to eliminate thier ability to interact with you....
coan.net: i dont really like using cloak but my point is if you block someone it would make sense by blocking them it would automatic move me of there friends list
Snoopy: plus they can sign off & be in guest mode and see what a person is doing... again, unless cloak. Adding someone to their enemy list does not really stop a person from seeing what you are doing, if that is indeed what you are trying to do.
I had to put myself in cloak at one time when some idiot was watching me and keeping track of what I was doing - what boards I was visiting, etc... it was really annoying. I finally stopped caring and took myself off of cloak. But cloak is the only real reason to "hide" what you are doing.
Snoopy: They could also see what you're doing wif they had you on their Enemies List. The Friends and Enemies lists work the same way in this respect.
Besides, there is a bug in the system which causes the following: if you have someone on your Enemies list, you cannot see what they're doing when you're in a game with such person, while they can see what you are doing. In simpler words, it's the opposite from the way it should be.
baddessi: so in other words even thou you have ppl on block unless you are cloaked they can still see what your doing if they already had you on therer friends list
AbigailII: true .. a thread shouldnt be spread up .. thats why i would love it to be possible to actually move a thread instead of directing follow up posts .. on other sites where i am a mod you can move a thread (the boards are threaded there) and leave a (shadow) link to the new location of the thread
as it is right now someone reading the discussion will also see the post (in the same discussion) which directs the follow up to another board and can follow it there
where as it stays on this board it might not be found by someone in the future searching for a specific discussion about knight fight its especially for the archiving and future searches that its preferred to put the post on the most specific board
the subject of the colors is definetly a subject for this board .. an in depth discussion of knight fight specifically might fit best on a specific knight fight board
personally, in this case, i didnt mind staying both discussion (color and knight fight) on this board .. but i understand the reason to move it .. the reason why i responded was that the response was seen as a personal issue .. which it wasnt
but best of all would be a threaded board with the possibility to move threads and leave a shadow link :)
baddessi: ah okay i didnt see that bit but does that also apply to if you know someone has you on there friends list then you put them on block does it automatic remove them from there friends list
Hrqls: there are some people who dont read this board as they are only interested in the games and not in the site itself ... those people might miss the discussion about the specific game
That, IMO, isn't a good enough reason. If people don't want to read board X, than that's their loss if there are a few posts on board X that they might be interested in. Hey, I don't read the music board, but that doesn't mean I'd like a thread to be continued on a board I do read if it's about a subject I might be interested in.
There will also be people who are interested in starting colour effects that do not read the Knight Fight board, and you'd hurt those people.
And, finally, one should spread threads out over boards too lightly. It becomes harder to follow a thread - specially if people search for it. One board will have a thread without an end - the other a thread without a beginning. A lose-lose situation. Considering there were only a few posts about Knight Fight in the general discussion about starting colour, I'd say keep the discussion together. If you don't want to read it, just scroll up.
