Abraham Lincoln:

"The dogmas of the quiet past are inadequate to the stormy present. The occasion is piled high with difficulty, and we must rise with the occasion. As our case is new, so we must think anew and act anew."

The actual thing of being liberal and then changing I think in the UK we have it more accurately phrased...

.. It's called getting on the stage to being a grumpy old man.

Artful Dodger: Yes, I did hear of the telephone game, but wasn't it you who insisted on people backing their posts with sources and facts? I just wanted you to do the same thing you require from others, which you often do not. How typical. There is a proverb about it in Czech, but I guess you wouldn't understand it even if I translated it for you to one of those languages you speak. How many are they? I must have forgotten…

Tuesday:   That kind of economics & morality go hand in hand.  Sure slavery was about economics, but it was economy based on racism.

My post was in response to Dan's assumption that all racism resulted from progressivism & the Dems.

Artful Dodger:   You state as the conclusion to this post that, "it's the liberal policies in America that are at fault for ALL the racial problems."

I will certainly grant that neither party can wash its hands of a racist past, & that Dirksen was a hero to the civil rights movement. But, here in the South, we had only 1 political party to speak of until after the Civil Rights Act passed.  Democrats were the only party in this region from Reconstruction to that time.  Senator Thurmond switched parties in '64 because of the Civil Rights Act.  Many of the Dems you mentioned would not be considered "liberals" cuz there was only 1 game in town.

LBJ, whose hands were not clean either, knew he would loose the Dem Party in the South by promoting & signing the Civil Rights Act.  Sure enough, Nixon was able to use a "Southern Strategy" & '68 & '72 to win elections & set up a strong Republican base there.  Many of the Conservative Southern Dems switched parties to the GOP aftewards.  The few that stayed, like Hollins, changed some their positions.  Others like George Wallace & Lester Maddox remained Dems but became loose cannons.  Today, now that all the Party switching has taking place, the Dem. Party, in particular the Progressive wing, is very weak in the Southern states.

But, I agree with you that both parties have a checkered past when it comes to race relations, but there are some compexities, particularly in the South.

Artful Dodger: By the way, thanks for that “research” at Geocities. Your links are awesome. First you post a quote and refer to a Wikipedia site of Guizot which does not even remotely say anything about the quote you post, and then you refer to a non-existing research. But am I surprised?

Artful Dodger: Find five differences:

A) If you're not a liberal when you're 25, you have no heart. If you're not a conservative by the time you're 35, you have no brain.

B) Not to be a republican at 20 is proof of want of heart; to be one at 30 is proof of want of head.

Tuesday & GTCharlie: We already do pay to see some animals as they are so rare. In some cases due to hunting, etc some species need to be bred for introduction back into the wild.

I prefer the open park zoo's and animal sanctuary's. Good to see lion's roam somewhat.

Artful Dodger: No it can be many factors including man made pollution. It's not just the sun, the seasons, a fart by a gigantic space monster and some of mankind's problem with remembering to look after our home for the sake of a buck.

The orangutan is facing the loss of it's habitat so we can have cheap food and cheap chocolate. Arrangements made to protect the orangutan's habitat and that of the Indonesian rainforest are being broken by men who just love money for those who don't care.
