Thema: Re: Request for backgammon.
I think a doubling cube which has been asked about in the past would be a great addition to multiple game matches. Obviously in single game matches it makes no sense. I would be more inclined to play multiple game matches if the doubling cube was put into play here at brainking. It adds more strategy to backgammon matches as well.

Agreed. It would add a bit more depth to Crowded Backgammon as well.

You could use that cube in all backgammon variations. I am sure most backgammon enthusists would concer backgammon matches without a double cube is not really backgammon at all.

i indeed concur.

You could also implement in single games: Winning a doubled game could count as winning 2 games in the ratings.

Would also need to double the points for a gammon and triple for a backgammon.

grenv: Actually, if the code is acting as intended, that is the exact definition of bug free code! Like Fencer said, just because it allows you to perform a move against the official rules of backgammon doesn't make it a bug - it makes it a missing or unimplemented feature or rule.

Fencer said on 26th August that a doubling cube is on the TO DO list but there are more important things he has to do first.

More important things like autopass type feature for my battleboats variation game idea.

i disagree. The code has a bug because the requirements were incorrect and that was passed on to the code.

If it were more obvious you would probably agree.

for example, once again, if the queen moved only one square at a time because the engineer didn't understand the rules of chess, I would consider that a bug, or defect, not a missing feature.

No, if the queen moved like a king because that's what the programmer intended it is NOT a bug. A bug is when the code doesn't do what is desired. If the code does exactly what you planned for it to do, it is COMPLETELY bug free.

indeed there's a single valid argument against autopass:
i.e., in that case your roll would be triggered by your opponent.
actually something that game purists certainly wouldn't like ... ~*~

When browsing the tournaments that are waiting to be signed up for, it would be nice to have them marked when they are already full. Instead we have to go through two seperate links, only to find out that it is already full. :)

11. September 2004, 22:49:47
Czuch
Or... maybe they should not even still be listed under games waiting to sign upanymore, since they are already full. Maybe have them listed under games waiting to start or the like?

Thema: Autopass
I still dont see the taboo on this subject on Fencer's part. I still would like to see my idea of battleboats bonus implemented. To do it without anyone cheating you would have to have an autopass type of feature built into the program however. The idea for those who dont know is you get to one shot per turn and keep your turn as long as you get a hit. However this would be easy to cheat. So you would have to submit the move officially before you know the result. After the submission of the move, if you get a hit on a ship the game would autopass your opponent's turn and allow you another shot. Important the shot would have to be submitted like normal before you would know if it was a hit or not to prevent cheating.

I agree, IMup - it's a pain trawling through the tournaments to find they're already full.

Thema: Re: Autopass
That isnt really aotopass is it Brian? It would technically still be your turn if you got a hit, and wouldnt need to be passed back to you... Sounds like it could be a fun variation. It could even be done with dark boats or any of them for that matter, and would definitly help speed up the game :)

12. September 2004, 00:04:38
Brian1971
I dont know if it is really autopass but it is something similar to it. i am not sure what else to call it though. However you would have to submit your move after each shot like ending your turn to avoid cheating. The other battleboats games dont need it as this is something different. I mean imagine like in battleboats plus getting a hit and keeping your turn until you miss completely. A person could get a hit on the first turn and keep shooting until they sink them all. That would be 5 shots each go around. The other player would never get a turn to play. So my idea takes original battleboats and adds a twist. I call it Bonus Battleboats because the bonus is keeping your turn by getting a hit. You can play this version if you get one of those handheld battleship games by Milton Bradley. The handheld battery game has this version on it.

If Fencer adds a "tournament full" indicator there'll be more complaints about players moving slowly, just enjoy those extra clicks and you'll be fine.

Thema: Re:
What does one have to do with the other?

It doesnt have to be an indicator anyway.... it should not even be listed on the 'tournaments waiting to sign up' page at all.

12. September 2004, 16:13:10
ughaibu
If one is busy futily clicking full tournaments one doesn't notice one's empty "your turn to move" box, see?

12. September 2004, 17:30:16
Czuch
No... I still dont get your point. If my 'your turn to move' box is empty (I have no games to play) how does that slow down games? lso if I do have games to play, it would be quicker if I dont have to wade through tournaments to find out if they are full or not.

12. September 2004, 17:35:47
grenv
ughaibu is trying to say that extra clicks slows down the fast players. This seems like a small effect, but I'm sure it was the comic effect that was sought.

12. September 2004, 17:39:16
ughaibu
WHAT? Baby, baby, baby, if you your sweet self are engaged elsewhere, for example in the futile clicking on full tournaments, you will not see that the oppo's still made no moves, it don't speed up the games themselves but it reduces the chances of noticing that one's partner hasn't moved, or to re-express it "is playing slowly", savvy?

In this the internet age our main form of physical exercise is that of clicking with the mouse finger, without regular and profuse clicks one'll keel over smitten by a cardial infarction. Treasure those extra clicks man, they're what's keeping you going.

I think Rex you need to read the section on how acquire brains and what they are and what theyare good for. Brains has nothing to do with playing the games.
