Teema: Removal of players, stairs
I do have a request for Fencer. Could you by some chance remove the inactive players from the stairs games. Some players havent played on site for months and some dont even participate in the stairs anymore. Also since in my opinion some of the stairs games are basically dead, we should either remove them or do some sort of promotional deal to give people reason to play them. I like the concept of stairs. It is a King of the Mountain type of attitude invlovement with them. I would like to see them competitive. Thanks.

Teema: Rememberance
I know this is an international site. However September 11, 2006 marks the 5 year anniversaryof the terror attacks in the USA. That attack changed the entire international landscape. Thousands died and I think their deaths should be remembered. I think unless the entire international community joins together to fight global terror we will never have peace on Earth. So on this day I ask everyone to say a little prayer that evil be defeated and that eternal peace can be attained. Please take a moment today to appreciate all that you have and be kind to your fellow man. Thank you.

Hrqls: I like the idea of prizes for top players in various game types. I guess my whole thing is if you are going to have prize competitions it should be fair for everyone to win a prize. The players that play constantly through the day should not have an advantage over those who cant play as much each day. I would even go as far as paying members and pawns having different competitions so they are not lumped together. Pawns cant carry as many games and wont be able to compete with most paying members. Pawns should not be left out of any prize competition either.

Teema: Re:
Erinity: Before jumping on me you should read my entire post. I did use the word IF. I say this to Watford as well. IF people are here every hour, every minute of the day they need a life. Again I stress the word IF. I know that most people are not in that category. However there are a select few that are, I am sure. My point ultimately comes down to that the odds of someone who doesnt have the time to play as much per day here has no chance to win a prize under the current action points system as there are going to be those who have all the time in the world to sit here play hundreds IF not thousands of games at a time each day to win the top prizes. I think personally there is something wrong with that kind of system Fencer has set up. Maybe a solution is to offer prizes for top players in various number of games ranges.

Example would be to divide people into categories based on average number of games played at a time.
50-100 games
100-200 games
200-300 games
etc etc etc.

This way people who play over a thousand games at a time dont drown out players who play much fewer games.

gambler104: I personally feel if people are playing virtually every hour, every minute of the day then they need a life. Brainking is a fun site to play on but please someone like me who has a job that leaves me away from home about 12 hours a day, plus a girlfriend to see in my free time and the responsibilities I have leaves me about 2 hours at the most per day to make moves. So someone like me will NEVER have a chance to win a prize using action points.

I ask this question BBW as the first one did not count against the game limit total. However I have 36 games total between started games and waiting games, plus a tournament starting today and I am awaiting the next round of a tournament I advanced in. So I will snuggle up close to 50 games with all the games starting. I just wanted to know how the Ponds games would be counted.

Teema: Re: Run around the pond
I see your point Wiktor. That point is only assuming that everyone is grouped together as one section and only if there is only one elimination every 2 days. However no one but Fencer and Liquid knows how it is going to be setup. It could be divided up into several sections like a normal tournament. However even if we are all together in one section, the odds are there will be multiple eliminations at least in the early rounds. With over 200 people in it, you must figure there will be several people betting the same number of points which may be the low bet.My prediction the whole thing will be done within 6-8 months. Still a long time, but not bad with as many people in the run. Your super sized tournaments with 100 or more people last longer than that.

It is an old arguement of fast players compared to slow players. There are 2 sides to the arguement and in the end there is no resolution. Like I have always said in these situations is only take games and tournaments in which the time limits are something that you can live with. IF you think the time limit is too long then dont play the game or tournament. I personally play games that have 3 day or shorter limit for the most part. However Mrloupcity does bring up the newest way to prolong games by those who wish to abuse the limit by having auto vacations kick in to prevent time outs. I would suggest that auto vacations be non-existent in tournaments. IF you do decide to play a game or tournament which has a long time frame to play a move then you really have no complaint when the opponent uses the whole time frame to make their move.

Second Happy birthday to Fencer. How does it feel to be ancient? LOL. Last but not least, lets get back to fun and playing games again. Afterall this is a game site. Teema: do away with pawns???
I dont think so. Then Fencer might as well just shut down the site. Pawns are important to the site as far as having more peopleto play. Also if you dont give someone a chance to play for free at the beginning how will they get a chance to see how good this site is? Besides there are several who cant afford to pay for a membership due any number of circumstances. I was a pawn for a long time too. However now I am able to afford membership, I bought a membership through December 2005 plus have helped a couple of others attain a membership as well. I do beleive that 20 games and unlimited moves is more than generous when compared to IYT who has only 25 moves a day for non paying members. I think we could limit the number of moves per day on pawns though. Maybe unlimited moves for the first 60 days and then after that limit them to 50 moves a day. 50 moves for many is still a lot of moves per day.I would be willing to bet the average pawn carries 10-12 games so that would average out to 4-5 moves per game per day. Not too bad.

For you to get brains you need to be a paid member. When you become a member and you get others to sign up as paid members and use you as a referral, you get brains. With the brains you can collect them and when you get enough you can cash them in for additional paid membership later. See the Brains link at the top of the page for details.

I agree Andersp. It shows however how a few bad apples past and present put all people like you and Antje under the microscope. It is not fair to you and I know neither you are cheaters. I used to have a roommate and we had 2 different internet hookups in the house. However when her computer crashed she used mine. IYT did not like it so they forced one account to be closed down. There was no cheating going on. That is one of the reasons IYT never got a paid membership from me. However I paid for one here and one for my friend, and part of another one for someone else here. This site is the best on the site. A couple bad instances should not take away from that.

17. juuli 2004, 23:17:21
Brian1971
My stand is if you have more than one person using the same computer to play games here, one should have a membership. In the before mentioned case, both Mastermind and Smart Alx are paid members so I dont see any real problems with them playing each other even if it is a rated game. One can tell if the game was rigged or legitimate based on reviewing a game's moves. I know there are exceptions to that statement. For the most though it is verily easy to determine.

Teema: Re: US Chess Federation Formula
To me it seems very similar. Like I said the formula is modified for brainking. I have played lots of backgammon games. I am over 2200. I play games with people 2000 or higher as rule. My game fluxuations are generally 8 points up or down depending on the result. That is similar to the chess formula. However like I said Fencer could answer this issue better than I can. He knows the modifications to the formula.

Like I said the formula was modified when Brainking adopted it for its rating system. I am sure Fencer could explain it better than me. Of course liek I said I play more for fun and less for rating.

Teema: andersp
Sure i guess there could be a problem. there will always be some who will not like it. But that is their problem and not yours. Everyone who is on a team in a fellowship should have an opportunity to play. If it were me I would let those who signed up first get the chance. If someone wanted to play but was too late in signing up then too bad. However then I would say whomever played in one tournament should give someone else who didnt play a chance in the next one. Or possibly do a blind draw and rotate the team each tournament so everyone would get a chance that wants one.

I would agree with you about the rating fomula but like I said I dont worry too much about it. I figure if I win more than I lose, it will be a good number, if I lose more than I win, then it will be a low number. As far as fellowship teams, depending on the fellowship, you may be able to play team tournaments for your fellowship, if it is an open sign up offered for tournament. Meaning that the captains or Big Boss says first come, first serve despite rating. So your point of BKR meaning more, may not always apply. However yes it might mean something to some fellowship captains or bosses.

Must be a bug or like I said before, since it is a new game, a table hasnt been established yet.

1. juuli 2004, 19:32:31
Brian1971
Stevie: Of course you wont be on the established table until 25 rated games are completed. However check the table with all rated players.

1. juuli 2004, 19:31:15
Brian1971
Stevie: It is possible since it is a new game.

BuilderQ: It is the US Chess Federation formula. However it is modified for BrainKing. For instance if you beat a significantly weaker opponent you gain little or no BKR. If the formula was exactly applied you would lose points in this example. So if you can access the US Chess Federation Formula for calculating a rating number than you can figure it out.

1. juuli 2004, 19:23:08
Brian1971
Teema: ratings
First off I play for fun and ratings second. However remember the formula is a complicated one. There are a variety of factors based on both you and your opponent. Number of games played, quality of oppostion, wins-loss-draw record is taken into account as well as your current opponent that you beat or lost to. It is impossible to compare why you gained or lost more points than your opponent or gained or lost less points than your opponent. Their game record is going to be different than yours based their own record and game history and opponent history. I look at ratings as an afterthought as I use it to find games against opposition in the same range as me or higher. However if you play for the fun of it the rating number means very little.

Teema: Questions and answers
It is justmy point of view. However since many people have the same sort of questions about the new version of Brainking. It would be wise to post concerns here as then Fencer can answer many people with one posting instead of trying to private message everyone. Liquid and Fencer both work other jobs, have families and upkeep this site. Please help them being patient and understanding. The more private messages they have to respond to the less time they have to work out the bugs on the site. So in my view the best way to get an answer to a question is to make a posting on a board. Also if other members know the answer they can aid Fencer and Liquid by answering on their behalf which also frees up some time for them. Again it is just my point of view..
