Teema: Canine Yeast Skin Problems.......
My doggie is allergic to EVERYTHING this time of year, literally. I use a vinegar and water spray for her belly and paws to keep the yeast from spreading (works pretty well, but she spends alot of time in creeks, woods, etc.) & I'm looking for something that I can use for itching other than Benadryl. Something homeopathic possibly, seems like all I do is use steroid cremes on her (her ears, her eyes) - anybody know of anything that might help that isn't medicated? I'm stumped & feel like all I'm doing is drugging her.....

DAMIEN IS A HANDSOME AND VERY INTELLIGENT LOOKING GSD, ANASTASIA! GOOD LUCK WITH HIS SCHUTZHUND TRAINING!

AND HELLO TO EVERYOHE HERE! I'M
SEAWOLF2 AND HAVE NEARLY FIFTY YEARS EXPERIENCE OF WORKING WITH ANIMALS. I STARTED YEARS AGO AS AN APPRENTICE TO MY UNCLE WHO RAISED SIBERIANS.
I BREED SHOW/FIELD/OBEDIENCE
WEIMARANERS AND RUN A MOBILE PET CARE BUSINESS. I'M GETTING ON IN YEARS NOW THOUGH, SO MOST OF MY SHOWING DAYS ARE OVER EXCEPT FOR THE OCCASIONAL SHOW
OR FIELD EVENT. MOSTLY I GO TO SPECIALTY SHOWS AND HUNT TESTS WITH MY DOGS NOW. MY DOGS HAVE EARNED MANY TITLES IN SHOW, FIELD AND OBEDIENCE OVER THE YEARS THOUGH AND I AM VERY PROUD OF THEIR ACCOMPLISHMENTS.

I WROTE TO ANASTASIA FIRST BEFORE POSTING HERE AS I WANTED TO BE SURE THIS WAS INDEED A PUBLIC FORUM. MY REASON WAS TO ASK HER PERMISSION TO POST HERE AND OFFER MY "SERVICES" (GRATIS OF COURSE!) TO ANYONE HERE WITH
QUESTIONS ABOUT THE CARE AND TRAINING OF THEIR PETS, BUT IN PARTICULAR DOGS (& CATS). I AM NOT A VETERINARIAN, BUT I DO HAVE A LIFETIME'S EXPERIENCE IN CARING FOR ANIMALS AND I WOULD
LIKE TO SHARE IT WITH YOU ALL.
WHILE MANY MEDICAL PROBLEMS CAN BE ADDRESSED FROM A "FIRST AID" PERSPECTIVE, NOT ALL CAN! WHEN IN DOUBT ABOUT THE SERIOUSNESS OF YOUR PET'S HEALTH I URGE YOU TO GET TO THE VET ASAP! BUT IF YOU NEED HELP, I WILL DO MY BEST TO HELP YOU EVALUATE THE SITUATION AND MAKE SUGGESTIONS
ACCORDINGLY.

THANK YOU ANASTASIA FOR WELCOMING ME TO YOUR BOARD.

Teema: Re:
anastasia:

SPEAKING AS A PROFESSIONAL HERE, I COULDN'T AGREE MORE
WITH YOU, ANASTASIA!

THE USE OF SHOCK COLLARS, OR
"E-COLLARS" AS THE YUPPIES LIKE TO REFER TO THEM, IS ENTIRELY TOO MUCH OVER-USED AND NOT FOR THE APPROPRIATE REASONS EITHER!

MANY DOG OWNERS THESE DAYS THINK (OR WANT TO THINK!) THAT THEY CAN TRAIN THEIR DOG IN A VERY SHORT TIME! PUPPIES ARE LIKE BABIES.... IT TAKES A LOT OF TIME, PATIENCE AND MOST OF ALL PERSEVERANCE IN TRAINING A DOG PROPERLY! UNFORTUNATELY FOR THE DOG, THOSE WHO DO NOT LEARN QUICKLY ENOUGH TO SUIT THEIR
OWNERS OFTEN WIND UP IN THE DOG POUND OR THE ANIMAL SHELTER.

THE USE OF A SHOCK COLLAR MAY BE NECESSARY IN APPROPRIATE CASES. BUT THAT BEING SAID, I
HAVE TO AGREE WITH ANASTASIA THAT IT SHOULD ONLY EVER BE USED AS A TOOL OF "LAST RESORT"
THOUGH! IT IS A CRUEL METHOD OF TRAINING AND REALLY NOT AT ALL NECESSARY EXCEPT IN THE MOST EXTREME CASES.

AND SPEAKING OF WHY ANIMALS END UP IN POUNDS AND SHELTERS....
ONE OF THE BIGGEST REASONS FOR ANIMALS LANDING IN SUCH AWFUL PLACES WHERE MANY ULTIMATELY WIND UP BEING EUTHANIZED THROUGH NO FAULT OF THEIR OWN
IS OWNERS WHO CANNOT OR WILL NOT TAKE PROPER CARE OF THEIR PETS. THEY DENY THEM PROPER VETERINARY CARE AND DO NOT PROVIDE PROPER FOOD AND SHELTER
OR TRAINING AND SOCIALIZATION.
THE USE OF SHOCK COLLARS TO TRAIN A DOG IN THIS KIND OF A SITUATION IS UTTERLY USELESS.

ANOTHER CAUSE FOR ANIMALS THAT WIND UP IN THE POUNDS AND SHELTERS IS PEOPLE WHO DO NOT
CHOOSE THEIR PETS WISELY! THEY
GET THEM ON "IMPULSE" BECAUSE THE ANIMAL IS "CUTE" AS A PUPPY OR A KITTEN ALWAYS IS, AND THEN WHEN IT GROWS UP AND TURNS INTO
AN ADULT THE "CUTE FACTOR" IS NO LONGER THERE. THOSE POOR ANIMALS WIND UP IN THE SHELTERS
THROUGH NO FAULT OF THEIR OWN!

IF ONLY PEOPLE WOULD RESEARCH THE BREEDS THEY ARE INTERESTED IN MORE CAREFULLY BEFORE TAKING
A NEW PET HOME THEY WOULD FIND
THAT CERTAIN BREEDS, NO MATTER HOW "CUTE" OR "PRETTY" THEY ARE, SIMPLY DO NOT SUIT THEIR FAMILY'S "LIFESTYLE" AND A LOT
OF "UNHAPPY ENDINGS" COULD HAVE EASILY BEEN AVOIDED. SADLY, IT IS ALWAYS THE ANIMALS THAT PAY FOR THE MISTAKES OF THEIR "UNINFORMED" OWNERS.

THAT IS WHY I WORK VERY HARD WITH MY DOG CLUBS' BREED RESCUE TO PLACE "SECOND HAND" DOGS IN PROPER HOMES SO THAT THEY DON'T KEEP WINDING UP IN SHELTERS OR ON DEATH ROW AT THE LOCAL DOG POUND THROUGH NO FAULT OF THEIR OWN. 99% OF THE TIME IT'S NOT THE DOG THAT'S THE REAL PROBLEM
IT'S THE OWNER! BUT IT IS ALWAYS THE DOG THAT PAYS FOR THE IGNORANCE OF THE OWNER, AND I FIND THAT UTTERAL ABHORRENT AND INEXCUSABLE.

I PITY THE CHILD WHO COMES FROM A HOME WHERE THE PARENTS CAN'T TAKE CARE OF AN ANIMAL PROPERLY
AS IT IS AN INDICATION OF JUST HOW MUCH EFFORT THEY WOULD PUT INTO RAISING THEIR CHILDREN TOO! NOT TO MENTION WHAT THEY'D BE TEACHING THEIR CHILDREN ABOUT HOW TO TREAT ANIMALS AS WELL!!

I'M SORRY... I NEGLECTED TO POST IN MY INTRODUCTION ON THE ANIMALS BOARD THAT I AM VISION
IMPAIRED. I HAVE GLAUCOMA AND VERY POOR VISION AS A RESULT.
THE USE OF UPPER CASE WASN'T MEANT AS "SHOUTING" SO PLEASE DO NOT TAKE IT THAT WAY, OKAY?

I AM A SENIOR CITIZEN AND ONLY
POSTED TO OFFER MY "SERVICES"
AS A PET CARE PROFESSIONAL TO PEOPLE ON THE BOARDS HERE. IN NO WAY DID I MEAN TO OFFEND ANYONE IN ANY WAY.

I USE WEBTV AND I DO NOT HAVE A

ALL CAPS IS VERY NECESSARY FOR
ME IN ORDER TO BE ABLE TO SEE AND READ HERE. IF THE USE OF UPPER CASE IS NOT ALLOWED ON THE BOARDS THEN I SHALL HAVE TO REFRAIN FROM POSTING ANYMORE.
I'M TERRIBLY SORRY IF I OFFENDED YOU. OBVIOUSLY YOU
MUST HAVE BEEN OR YOU WOULD NOT HAVE TAKEN THE TIME TO WRITE TO ME PRIVATELY. ALL I CAN SAY IS "I'M SORRY!".

ANASTASIA - IF YOU COULD PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF THE USE OF ALL CAPS CAN BE ALLOWED HERE ON THE BOARD FOR THOSE OF US WHO ARE VISION IMPAIRED? I'M SORRY IF I BROKE ANY "RULES" HERE!!! I DID NOT MEAN TO DO THAT, IT'S JUST THAT I HAVE VERY POOR VISION AND THE USE OF UPPER CASE IS TO HELP ME TO SEE AND READ BETTER.

Teema: HELLO AGAIN, SEAWOLF2!

HERE'S A STORY FROM THE L.A. TIMES ABOUT A DOG THAT COULD USE SOME TRAINING IN FINANCIAL MATTERS!

DEBBIE HULLEMAN'S DOG PEPPER HAS BEEN KNOWN TO GNAW ON LIPSTICK AND MUNCH ON SHAMPOO BOTTLES. BUT PEPPER GOT HULLEMAN INTO A REAL MESS AFTER GOBBLING NEARLY $750.

"THIS IS PROBABLY THE WORST," HULLEMAN SAID THURSDAY, RECALLING HOW SHE POKED THROUGH VOMIT AND DOG PILES IN THE YARD.

HULLEMAN HAD ASKED HER MOTHER IN OAKDALE, MINN., TO TAKE CARE OF PEPPER AND HER OTHER DOG LAST MONTH WHILE SHE AND HER HUSBAND WENT ON VACATION. PEPPER, AN 8-YEAR-OLD BLACK LABRADOR-GERMAN SHORTHAIR, GOT INTO A PURSE BELONGING TO HER MOTHER'S FRIEND AND CHEWED THE CASH FROM AN ENVELOPE.

HULLEMAN'S MOTHER RECOVERED SOME OF THE MONEY THAT PEPPER SPIT OUT. BUT WHEN HULLEMAN RETURNED AND WENT TO CLEAN UP HER DOGS' MESS OUTSIDE, SHE SAW A $50 BILL HANGING FROM ONE PILE.

THE CHORE OF SORTING THROUGH DOG FECES NETTED ABOUT $400, SAID HULLEMAN, 50. BETWEEN THAT AND OTHER BILLS THAT PEPPER HAD EITHER VOMITED OR SIMPLY CHEWED ON, THE FAMILY RECOVERED $647.

THEY SWAPPED THE SOILED MONEY FOR FRESH CURRENCY AT A BANK. "I SOAKED IT AND STRAINED IT AND RINSED IT," HULLEMAN SAID.

YES, I'D HEARD THAT STORY ON THE NATIONAL NEWS! LOL!! PAPER MONEY WHEN SWALLOWED IS NOT USUALLY A PROBLEM, BUT HAD THE DOG GOTTEN INTO COIN MONEY IT COULD HAVE BEEN DEADLY! PENNIES IN PARTICULAR ARE TOXIC DUE TO THE COPPER CONTENT IN THEM. BUT ALL COINS COULD POSE A PROBLEM IF IT CREATED AN INTESTINAL BLOCKAGE! THIS FAMILY NEEDS TO TEACH THEIR DOG THE MEANING OF "NO" AND "DROP IT" BEFORE SHE GETS HERSELF INTO A MORE DEADLY SITUATION IN THE FUTURE.

Teema: Most people foods aren't good for dogs but some is ok.
Vegetables. Most veggies are OK for dogs, either raw or cooked.  Rice and pasta are good too.  Our dog eats rice everday as part of her diet.  Cooked meat in small amounts (in moderation).  Our little dog gets boiled chicken daily too.  She's old and a vet recommended it.  It's helped as she had some serious problems with canned dog food.  Some dairy products are fine (low fat) but again, in moderation.

And many dogs love fresh fruits such as apples, berries, bananas, and seedless watermelon.   Once again, moderation is the key.

He gets a popsickle everynight, any flavor makes him happy but he really seems to like the Red,White, and Blues that we buy.

He will get vanilla ice cream maybe 3 times a year BUT he gets walked or goes on a run everyday and trains hard at the club 2 times a week. Our vet...who,in his opinion says that every dog can stand to lose 5 pounds,lol....says that Damien looks great!! and he does (NOT just saying that cuz I am his Mommy either, lol)

Teema: Re: Watermelon
srnity:

THAT IS TRUE! DOGS SHOULD NOT EAT THE SAME DIET AS PEOPLE AS THEY ARE TRUE CARNIVORES (MEAT
EATERS) AND REQUIRE PROTEIN, NOT TOO MUCH FAT, AND NO SUGAR!
THEY CANNOT METABOLIZE IT!

WATERMELON HAS NATURAL SUGARS WHICH ARE NOT AS HARMFUL AS THE REFINED SUGAR USED IN HUMAN SWEETS AND TREATS. THE SUGAR IN ICE CREAM AND POPSICLES IS A REAL NO-NO THOUGH! THE DAIRY IN ICE CREAM IS NOT ONLY HIGH IN FAT CONTENT, BUT ADULT DOGS CANNOT METABOLIZE THE LACTOSE.
(PUPPIES REQUIRE THEIR MOTHER'S MILK TO ACQUIRE THE NATURAL ANTIBODIES FROM THE COLOSTRUM THE FIRST FEW WEEKS AFTER BEING WHELPED, BUT AS ADULTS THEY NO LONGER NEED NOR CAN THEY "USE"
OR METABOLIZE MILK PROTEINS.0
THAT IS WHY ICE CREAM OFTEN WILL GIVE ADULT DOGS DIARRHEA.

THERE ARE OTHER TREATS THAT YOU CAN GIVE DOGS THAT ARE MEANT FOR CANINE CONSUMPTION. ONE ICE CREAM LIKE TREAT IS CALLED "FROSTY PAWS" AND IT DOES NOT HAVE THE LACTOSE IN IT THAT REAL ICE CREAM HAS. BUT AS LONG AS IT ISN'T GIVEN IN LARGE AMOUNTS OR VERY OFTEN A SMALL
PORTION OF PLAIN VANILLA ICE CREAM USUALLY WILL NOT CAUSE
MUCH HARM EXCEPT FOR POSSIBLY
LOOSE STOOLS FOR A DAY OR TWO.

AND SPEAKING OF SWEETS: PLEASE BE AWARE THAT CHOCOLATE HAS A CHEMICAL COMPOUND IN IT THAT IS TOXIC TO DOGS - THEOBROMINE. UNDER NO CONDITIONS SHOULD YOU ALLOW YOUR DOGS TO HAVE CANDY CHOCOLATE OR CHOCOLATE-FLAVORED
FOODS CONTAINING COCOA POWDER.

ANOTHER "SWEET" TASTING ITEM YOU NEED TO KEEP YOUR ANIMALS
AWAY FROM IS ANTI-FREEZE! NOT
THAT ANYONE WOULD KNOWINGLY
GIVE IT TO THEIR PETS, BUT YOU NEED TO BE WATCHFUL THAT YOUR CAR DOES NOT LEAK AND LEAVE PUDDLES OF ANTIFREEZE WHERE YOUR PET OR YOUR NEIGHBORS PETS COULD GET INTO IT! IT IS VERY
SWEET TO THE TASTE AND DRAWS ANIMALS TO IT EVEN THOUGH IT IS HIGHLY TOXIC AND OFTEN LETHAL IF INGESTED. PLEASE MAKE SURE
YOUR RADIATOR HOSES ARE NOT LEAKING AND THAT THE OVERFLOW HOSE FROM YOUR RADIATOR IS NOT LEAVING PUDDLES OF ANTIFREEZE
WHERE YOUR PETS CAN GET INTO IT. USE PLAIN KITTY LITTER OR
"SPEEDY-DRI" SAND TO ABSORD THE SPILLS AND DISPOSE OF IT IN A COVERED CONTAINER THAT PETS CANNOT GET INTO.

ENJOY YOUR WEEKEND EVERYONE!

SEAWOLF2: Actually,if you read studies about wild wolves they do eat berries and other such things that contain natural sugars. They have also been noted to eat certain plants..thus deriving the "raw" diet that has become so popular (not among myself tho)

Also...it's a popsickle..not like I am throwing a cup of sugar down my dogs throat..he gets ice cream,ONE SCOOP every now and again...it has NOT effected his bowel movements because I do not give him that much at a time..thanks for your concern, but trust me..I am NOT going to feed a $2,000.00 dog somthing that is going to kill him

"Snoopy":

YES, MY COMMENTS WERE MEANT
AS GENERAL INFO FOR EVERYONE, SNOOPY. I WASN'T POINTING FINGERS AT ANYONE IN PARTICULAR
BUT JUST STATING THE OBVIOUS THAT POPSICLES ARE NOTHING BUT SUGAR AND WATER AND FOOD COLORING. IT IS BETTER TO GIVE DOGS PLAIN ICE CUBES. REFINED SUGAR IS NOT GOOD FOR DOGS OR HUMANS FOR THAT MATTER! NOT THAT IT WILL "KILL" THEM BUT THAT DOESN'T MAKE IT GOOD FOR THEM EITHER.

WILD CANIDS DO EAT A PARTIALLY MIXED DIET BUT THEIR PRIMARY SOURCE OF NUTRITION COMES FROM
PROTEIN - RAW MEAT - FROM PREY
THEY KILL. WOLVES AND WILD DOGS
EAT RAW MEAT AND BONES, AND WHEN THAT IS NOT AVAILABLE THEY DO SUPPLEMENT THEIR DIETS WITH WILD GRASSES AND BERRIES, YES.
BUT CARNIVORES ARE DEFINITELY MEAT EATERS - THAT IS THEIR NATURAL AND PRIMARY SOURCE OF NUTRITION.

THE PET FOOD INDUSTRY HAS TRIED TO CHANGE AND INFLUENCE WHAT WE FEED OUR PETS AND NOW WE HAVE EPIDEMICS OF OBESE PETS WITH ALL KINDS OF HEALTH PROBLEMS STEMMING FROM POOR AND/OR INAPPROPRIATE DIETS.

WE HAVE OVERWEIGHT PETS, PETS WITH DIABETES, AND ORTHOPEDIC ISSUES THAT ALL STEM FROM BEING FED COMMERCIAL PET FOODS WHICH ARE PRIMARILY GRAINS, NOT MEAT, IN MOST CASES. EVEN PREMIUM DOG FOODS CONTAIN HIGH RATIOS OF GRAINS. THE BOTTOM LINE IS THIS: PET FOOD MANUFACTURERS ARE IN THE BUSINESS OF MAKING MONEY! THEY ARE IN IT FOR PROFIT AND MANY COMPANIES CUT CORNERS TO INCREASE THOSE PROFITS AS EVIDENCED BY THE RECENT PET FOOD SCARE BACK IN MARCH AND APRIL.

AND STILL THERE ARE PETS DYING FROM THE EFFECTS OF THE TOXIC SUBSTANCES THAT WERE PUT INTO HUNDREDS OF BRANDS OF PET FOOD, INCLUDING THE MOST EXPENSIVE PREMIUM BRANDS ON THE MARKET!! THAT IS SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT AND KEEP IN MIND!

WE DO NOT REALLY KNOW WHERE OUR PET FOOD IS COMING FROM SINCE MANY OF THE INGREDIENTS ARE IMPORTED EVEN THOUGH THE FOOD IS PROCESSED HERE IN OUR OWN COUNTRY. THE SAME CAN ALSO BE SAID FOR HUMAN FOODS AS WELL. THIS IS A SCARY TIME WE LIVE IN NOW AND WE MUST KEEP INFORMED ABOUT WHAT WE FEED OUR ANIMALS AND OURSELVES AS BEST WE CAN. THE DECISIONS WE MAKE COULD WELL BE LIFE OR DEATH DECISIONS AS SOME PET OWNERS FOUND OUT THIS PAST SPRING.

THE FDA AND USDA INSPECTIONS OF HUMAN FOOD PRODUCTS ARE WOEFULLY INADEQUATE AND ALL TO INFREQUENT, AND THERE ARE NO RULES OR REGULATIONS IN PLACE TO MONITOR PET FOOD AT ALL! MOST PEOPLE DON'T REALIZE THAT
AND THINK IF THEY FIND A FOOD ON THE SHELF AT THE STORE THAT IT MUST BE SAFE AND NUTRITIOUS.
THAT SIMPLY IS NOT TRUE!
