I think this is some sort of communication problem (packet loss?) resulting in i) booted off the table (in this case) ii) the 'clear table' command not being executed. I'm pretty sure this round started for me with 5 cards on the table, almost certainly left over from the previous round. I don't know enough about this sort of programming to know whether it is possible to verify that each command has been carried out before continuing but that is what seems to be required.
Bwild: My guess is not. I think it gets corrupted for one player for some unknown reason. It was preceded by me being booted off the table, apparently for disconnection. This is the second time I have had something like this. The first time I was using Firefox. This time I was using Chrome.
