Nirvana: I wondered why there was so many versions of Melanie singing Ruby Tuesday on utube. Was it a big hit for her? Brand New Key was poison to her career in her opinion,it was overplayed and gave peope the impression she was a novelty act.

TexasToest: I constantly try and maintain an objective point of view when it comes to different styles of music. It's so easy to label certain music as "crap" but I try and remember that it's an art form and regardless of it being pleasing to my ear it might be pleasing to others. In other words, there is no "bad" music, just different.I can appreciate those who are schooled in the finer points, but I was a self taught player and I think that also allows us to be less strict in what we can do,thus more creative at times.

Jim Dandy:  Thanks for that little piece.  How do people get soooooo talented, I just want to know.  I had a little discussion with a man at lunch the other day about the word musician.  His idea was that only classical musicians were musicians, and everybody else is amateur.  I knew I was in trouble at that point, and I just let it drop.  He got no validation, and I knew I was right.  I happen to be both, or have been, and it's nice to know I have knowledge beyond the imagination of some people.

Papa John Creech - isn't it funny how our parents, well my parents, I'm older than everybody here, thought rock 'n roll was such a screech genre.  And, here's Papa John, born 1917 (previous to THEIR own births) out there rockin' with the best.  Thanks for the trip down memory lane, Nirvana.

And then, there's John Fogerty.  That boy (little over a year older than me) is still rockin' today.  What I kept coming back to while watching that 1969 performance was your comment below, Jim Dandy, "Eddie Money is on the bill I see,he sure has got alot of milage out of one good album."  One might say the same of Fogerty, except he's done a lot of good stuff since.  But, he seems never to drop the great hits of the 60s.  I don't think he's changed one lick of "Down on the Bayou" since 1969.

Two weeks after Woodstock was the Texas International Pop Festival.  It was an awesome event, especially seeing that it took place in the middle of redneckville.  There is a website put up by a guy who was there.  He has included this story about a festival we have every year here in the Dallas area.  It's pretty funny, but only us oldies can REALLY relate.  Hahaha!  Enjoy Wilting Wildflower for yourself.

Haridaspal:  Bo!  That's some awesome flat pickin'.  We have a picker (well several, but he's my fav) named Bill Hearn.  There's nothing of his on You Tube, probably because no one has been able to film him.  But, he's blind, and he plays in the same style as Emmanuel.  It's amazing to me that he never misses a note.  His wife is also blind, and plays the piano and sings as well.  Someday, maybe I can get some information up about them.  Thanks for the flick.  I loved it.  It's obvious he loves performing too.

The following article appeared May 13, on Pueblo Chieftan.com under the name Zen Curmudgeon. Please, in the future, when using someone else's material credit the source.

Bob Wills dies:

Bob Wills, one of the most influential musicians in the history of country-western music, is born on a small farm near Kosse, Texas.

Born James Robert Wills in 1905, he was trained to be a musician from an early age. His father was a champion fiddle player, and he began giving Wills lessons as soon as the boy could hold the instrument. By the time he was 10, Wills was a skilled fiddler and a competent guitar and mandolin player.

Wills left home at 16 and worked various jobs, like picking cotton and preaching. He eventually joined a traveling medicine show, where he played fiddle and met Herman Arnspiger, a Texas farm boy who had learned to play guitar from a Sears catalog guitar book. The pair began playing at dances and parties around Fort Worth, and after adding a singer, won a regular radio gig performing as the Light Crust Doughboys.

In 1933, the group separated and Wills formed the band that would make him famous: Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys. With the Playboys, Wills perfected his hard-driving country-western sound, which drew heavily on the rhythms of the popular jazz-swing bands of the era. Wills' fiddle playing sounded nothing like the traditional folk music he had heard as a child. By using strong beats and syncopation, he produced a sound that seemed to cry out for dancing.

Wills eventually added drums, brass, and woodwinds to the Texas Playboys, making himself into a country-western bandleader in the style of Benny Goodman or Artie Shaw. Several of his bands were as large as 22 pieces, and Wills worked with more than 600 musicians in his long career. In 1940, Wills took some of the Playboys to Hollywood, where the band appeared in a number of western movies that won them a nationwide following. Among their many hits were highly danceable tunes like, "Take Me Back to Tulsa," "Bubbles in My Beer," and the ever popular "San Antonio Rose." All told, Wills has sold more than 20 million records to date

Many critics have argued Wills and the Texas Playboys had a greater influence on the sounds of country-western music than any other performer or group. In recognition of his achievements, Wills was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1968. He believed his chances of winning were so slim he was backstage chatting with friends when the award was announced. When he was finally tracked down and brought on stage, he said, "I don't usually take my hat off to nobody. But I sure do to you folks."

Stricken by a series of severe strokes, he died seven years later at the age of 70.

The above article was sent to me via email, I had no idea of its original origin.
