i have recently gotten me an usb hub with 4 ports.
i use it as a longer cable for my usb mouse which is on the firsy port
on the second port of the hub is my usb printer (which is usually turned off)
the other 2 ports are free to use for my camera or usb stick or whatever
now the problem :
when i turn on my computer it sees the hub, but it doesnt see whats connected to it
when i boot up my mouse wont react.
i always have to remove the mouse plug from the hug, reconnect it, and then my mouse will react.
is there anything to do about this ?
i am using windows 98 second edition (soon, within 10 years :), windows xp)
playBunny: ah well .. i wont be able to retain anything .. i will be moving from windows98se (which was harmed by some virusses, so it contains even more bugs now :)) to windowsxp ... will be a nice clean setup (at first :))
WhiteTower: hmm .. could be .. to be honest i havent checked it out yet .. i havent checked any options in firefox yet as i (for a year already :)) plan to do a clean format on this pc :)
BIG BAD WOLF: also building the gamelistst on the main page is done in stages .. as well as the fellowship list in the right column itself
its quite a nasty bug in firefox when you are reading some reviews and want to scroll down to the final page to read the summary ... reviews often have a lot of pictures .. which make the page skip all the time .. so you cant click on the 'go to next page' on the bottom .. its moved each time :) .. when i am on the (slow) internet at work i dont have the problem though as i can click the button before any pictures are loaded :)
i havent paid attention to any new developments the last 2 years.
all i know is that i want :
bluetooth
small organizer (just being able to place some texts on certain dates is enough)
small size & weight
no parts which can break easily
triband (i want to use it everywhere (for the usa i need triband, do i need anything special for asia ?)
java applets (i want to upload my own applets)
nice sound, not 'perfect' but nice will be enough :)
it would be pre, but no problem if it doesnt have:
navigation system (internal or external gps receiver)
ability to run applications written in other languages than java (vb? ;))
nice preinstalled games :)
fm radio
i dont care much about (but i wouldnt mind either):
camera (i have a real one)
mp3 player (i have one)
i want to be with the new provider for 1 year .. but maybe i will go for 2 years (no longer :)) .. plus i dont want to pay hundreds of euros for the phone itself :)
i am a bit biased against nokia as the phone i have now crashes quite often .. the battery fails .. and it powers up again .. but i will have lost my connection and have to redo any actions i was doing at that time
i had a 'printer driver' for on my pc (with windows 98) as well so i could print anything to pdf .. i never used it though .. somehow i never made any pdf documents, i dont why i would :)
some people in other companies i work with send a lot of documents in pdf though .. documents i want to edit to indert my own thoughts to send it back to them
but i guess one (or several) of the links posted below will help me out for that :)
Eriisa: *nod* i use that to view pdfs as well, but as bbw said i cant edit the pdfs
i think i have a driver for a pdf printer somewhere via which i can turn a document into the pdf format, but i still cant edit an existing pdf with it, which is what i want
nobleheart: *nod* i got the link from some unix people indeed :) what features does it miss ?
(there is a windows version now, but i am not sure if it still contains any bugs .. still have to try it out :))
nice search tip! thanks!
(one question about it though, isnt it better to use 'review' in your search instead of 'reviews' ?)
Teema: Re: Blank pages in Who is online, Online opponents and Bug tracker
WhiteTower: if you want you can change your password and let someone else login to your account
i am willing to test it for you if you want me to do it (if you want to be secure you send fencer a pm with the time you changed the password, and then he can always turn moves back when i would make a move in your account .. but i wouldnt)
Summertop: lol .. might be an idea .. just finished my can of coke for the day though :)
if i go wireless though i will go wireless on both .. today in the free newspaper in the train (spits) there was an article about mice (are computer 'mouses' also called 'mice' ?) and keyboards .. will read that now .. will see if there is anything new on the market since last time that i checked about 2 years ago :)
i really hate those keyboards without an insert key at the right place :)
i also hate it that i have 2 keyboards at home .. one with insert, home, pageup and below that delete, end, page down and below that power, sleep, wake
while on the other keyboards i have printscreen, scroll lock, pause and below insert, home, pageup and below delete, end, page down
so the delete key has been shifted one row down .. therefore i always miss it when i am on the other keyboard :)
i dont use the quick launch keys .. most of those functions i dont use or i access about as fast via another way (although i sometimes do use the volume key on there)
but it seems my keyboard is working again .. i cant find any flaws anymore :( ... which means i cant allow myself to buy the wireless stuff :)
(patrially because i have a logitech mouse with softgrip and thumb button ... i love the thumb button .. and i love the soft grip .. so far i havent seen any mouse with those 2 combined .. and i cant bring myself to lose one of those 2 features :))
somehow a night rest seems to do my keyboardf good .. it seems to work a bit better .. the 'df' was a normal typo for me .. not the keyboard this time :)
Maxxina: a few years ago there were a lot of websites where you could send sms for free ... about a year ago i wanted to find such a site again ... but couldnt find any which was totally free .. often you had to purchase another service and would then get the sms for free
but i think i found one site which offered 10 free sms per week for free, where you could sign up for free ... i forgot which site though (it was a dutch site) .. i will have a look if i can find it
i wrote myself a program which could send sms .. it encoded the message to the sms format (plus a few control characters) .. made a modem connection to an sms server .. send the message .. receive the answer from the server .. and break the connection
it used a dutch sms server .. but i guess it would work in czech as well when you know the phone number of an sms server there
last time when i tried my program it didnt work though .. but that might have been because i tried to make it work via an isdn modem line
(the traffic controllers we make still use the same sms server and it still works)
my program is written in visual basic 6 .. if you want i can send it to you via email
chessmec: thanks! it works perfectly! and its free ;)
i managed to turn the movies easily (and resize to reduce the size) and to cut them in pieces .... its a great program!!
the only disadvantage is that it can only save as avi ... does anyone know a nice free program to convert avi into mpg ?
i did a search on google, found a lot of them .. tried one .. and it gave me a really artistic mpg .. lost of moving shapes .. but you couldnt really recognize any human forms anymore ;)
does anyone know an avi to mpg convertor which works better ?;)
does anyone know of a program (preferably small and free ;)) to rotate a mpg movie ?
on my holiday i made a few movies with the camera dangling on my belt (i was sliding along a cable through the canopy myself) .. so the movie cant be viewed easily
(i meant the feature could see 'paul' as an abbreviation or code for MFEM .. in some programs you can enter any code to be replaced by anything while typing)
what system are you on ? can you look at your running processes and services ? appearently something is running to change this
temo: hmm i am using firefox at home (partialy convinced by reading posts on this board :)) .... i might have to try opera a bit more .. i think i already have it installed :)
temo: it caused my system to go into a loop it couldnt leave .. xp gave me a nice message telling me to reboot ;)
it looked like it was loading a very big image so my first guess is it was overloading my graphics memory ? but as i said i have very little knowledge about that part :)
i also wonder how i got only an empty html page source code when i downloaded the page from your link and it showed more when i opened the page itself (or at least it tried to show more ;))
to anyone reading how also feel the urge to click his link .. it will cause your computer to stall and you will have to reboot :)
temo: ah! now i see the word 'hate' it is in the subject which came from PhatPlaya .. probably out of frustration because the computer didnt work anymore :)
lol ... ok the main problem is in front of the keyboard ;)
*nod* the reason why i never had a mac is the price ... (and because there werent many games for macs when i was considering buying one) .. i never heard of a mac crash ... but i forgot my gf works on macs at her work .. and she manages to get it stalled quite often :) (yeah she is talented ;))
there should be some people using a mac on here ? (any statistics ? ;))
what about webtv ? are there virusses for that ? ;)
temo: *nod* windows has its advantages as well as unix as well as mac .. btw i didnt see anyone say on here they hate windows :)
i have windows because of the games, and because everyone uses it .. i program in visual basic because it makes it possible for me to write new applications quite fast .. with a user interface which all users will recognize .. which will run on a windows machine which all of the users will have
the problem with virusses is that there are so many for windows machines because the majority uses a windows machine .. so its more 'fun' for a viruswriter to concentrate on windows ..
also some writers of virusses (i said 'some', not 'most' ;)) make those because they are not satisfies with windows ... people not satisfied with unix and with the knowdledge to write virusses can just join the group and improve unix .. thats not possible with windows
the power of windows is in its number of users and its ease to install and use
the power of unix is its power to being manipulated by the users (although it requires quite some knowledge)
the power of mac is its graphical software (i think?) and that it uses its own hardware which makes it more stable as it doesnt have to be able to adjust to other hardware
PhatPlaya: i used hp unix in college and sometimes use it at work now
i used to love unix because it was so 'light' compared to windows which simply loads everything an average users might need (and then some more :))
nowadays the linux distributions include a heavy graphical user interface (often kde) and several other processes which increases the load
my idea was to turn my old 200mhz machine in a fast unix machine ... but i dont think that will work with any of the standard new distributions .. so i will have to do some tweaking :)
i havent used it at home yet .. i am in the process of sorting out the data on my harddisks, back up the important parts, and format and install xp and linux on it .. i dont know which distribution yet though
i had linux on my pc at work .. but i couldnt get it work with the network card (barebone system with a network controller on the motherboard) .. found some sites about it .. but neither worked .. i gave up back then as i had more projects starting up .. will have to try again it in the near future :)
i made a comparison between the 2 models which resulted in this
the price is about the same (also in local shops in my town or nearby)
advantages of the etrex :
- the etrex can run for 20 hours / the geko only for 12
- the etrex uses AA batteries / the geko uses AAA which are more difficult to obtain
- the etrex has 4 shades of grey while the geko has only black and white
advantages of the geko
- the geko stores 125 waypoints per route / the etrex only 50
- the geko is slightly smaller and half the weight of the etrex
i dont know about the importance of the other differences
i especially like the longer lifetime on the etrex ... but i dont want to give up 60% of my waypoints .. i think
fra: i thought about a pda as well .. but as you said the battery life isnt that good .. and its a bit more expensive (ok it offers more, but not something which is a big advantage to me :))
i will be searching the internet a bit more today, glad that you didnt have to pay for the use of the gps data :) ... do you really need a clear view to the sky ? that could be a problem in the forests of costa rica :(
i hoped from this review that i could use it well in a forest .. but i now see he writes the leaves werent out .. i dont know how much the 'timber' did block
danoschek: *nod* i have read some more about galileo .. but i dont expect it to be available for private persons like me within the next 5 years
it always states that the use of galileo is free, while you have to pay for the use of gps ... how will i be paying for the use of gps when i buy something like the geko 201 ? will i have to pay a monthly fee ?
Summertop: waas is a network of ground stations of which the coordinates are known exactly, those ground stations are used to calculate a correction on the gps data (due to atmospheric noise, slightly movement of the satelites, etc.) .. the ground stations are in the usa .. the waas signal cant be received everywhere .. and even if it can be received outside the usa i am not sure the correction is correct for other coordinates ... so waas is nice .. but not something i would select the device for (without waas the accuracy is about 15 meters, with waas about 3 meters)
i had a look at some of the exercizes .. fun :)
the geko 201 also has some gps games on it .. can be fun to play with :)
i am not sure about the maps ... i think i would like it and it would definetly be a pro .. i wont be able to use it in costa rica i think .. but i would be able to use it on other trips for sure . so for the moment i dont need it .. but its definetly a big pro (if it doesnt raise the price too much :))
i read a dutch review who said it worked nice for him .. so it works outside the usa as well *phew* :) .. i read some more reviews and it seems the battery life is slightly less than the 12 hours which garmin claims .. can you switch batteries without losing data ?
what were you experiences with the device you used ? (which brand, type, what area, what occasion ? ;))
fra: where did you use it ? did you also use it outside the usa ?
how was the battery life ? i will be walking for 1 day, then i maybe can recharge it but i am not sure, then 1 day walking around that location, than 1 day walking back .. so i would prefer to be able to keep it running for 3 days (which i fear is impossible) but at least for 1 day walking (about 9 hours)
your link says it can store maps in its 1mb memory, how accurate are those maps ? are there only maps from the usa or from other countries as well ?
i plan to buy it soon and play a bit with it over here (in car, on bike, and walking in the dunes/forest
do you have to pay a monthly fee to be able to use the gps data ?
